Description:
I just got an iMAC and started playing with GarageBand. My daughter's husband Erich has been giving me some guidance. I put together a quick theme (my first) using some loops and some virtual instruments.

Short and sweet &mdash 01/03/08 - 06:20:02 AM
This is nicely done. Good mix of sounds, and a solid arrangement. Dramatic and perhaps somewhat melancholy, this is a nice first post. Welcome to the neighborhood. I look forward to hearing more from you. Peace.

thanks for the comments &mdash 01/03/08 - 02:46:38 PM
I am just amazed at how easily one can "blue sky" themes and get out ideas. I was never easily addicted to anything but GB . . . well, I'm sunk. I think that the Cello, which is one of my favorites lends itself well to the sorrowful themes, but in reality, this was a loop and it was really limited in how you could pitch shift it and get a melody. I am learning that good software instruments are a neccesity.

grand entrance &mdash 01/03/08 - 07:52:46 AM
Welcome to Macjams and the addictive world of GarageBand! It looks like you have a knack for arranging... good timing as you pass the motif to different instruments and build the background. Near the end you introduce some double-bass (I think) that is a bit too low in pitch, you can barely hear what note they play, but otherwise, good compelling music.

Drakonis

You're right &mdash 01/03/08 - 03:16:25 PM
Its not double base though, but low horns. They were overpowering on the earlier sections until I learned how to profile the volume. Now they are underwater at the ending where they could probably stand a little umph. Your idea of double bass is I think a better idea. I'll try to double the horns in that section with the bass. Someone else also suggested the church bells were too low, but I was afraid they would take over and be too chintzy instead of adding a sinister tone.

Thank you. I am both humbled and excited by this community. I haven't seen this much talent and exciting and varied music since (dare I say it) the sixties! I am also excited and challenged by the concept of creating music in this way. I have a whole lot to learn and wish I had a space where I could have the MAC, an input module, my real instruments, my condenser mike and a MIDI keyboard to really soar. For now this is the new "family" computer and our first MAC. So I guess I will have to take baby steps. Still, there's a lot to learn right here in GB.

Thanks &mdash 01/10/08 - 01:32:20 PM
Feter,
These are all standard Garage band loops and software instruments. Of course its a bit of a challange getting the trumpets to sound like trombones and tubas but that's what you get out of the box. I am looking into getting better loops and software instruments, and a midi keyboard - playing the computer keyboard as a musical instrument is . . . well, frustrating at best.
Thanks again for your inspiration and comments

Lovely &mdash 01/31/08 - 11:58:18 AM
Hi, lovely piece of music. Were it not for the electronica, I could imagine it as the theme to some great epic film of the 60s such as Spartacus.
