Description:
I should take no credit for this music as it is nothing more than a digest of the many Mariachi tunes I hear on the jukebox at my favorite (cheap) Mexican restaurant– Taqueria Mi Tierra, on West Warren in Detroit, owned by Jesús Gómez. Just which mariachi tunes, I can't say, because they all sound pretty much the same – although I love them all.

The theme of this piece is the history of old Southern California. Joaquin Murieta was a real person who is said to be the inspiration for the Zorro stories, although to the Anglos of the California Gold Rush, he was nothing more than a brigand and horse thief.

I wish to dedicate this music to all the churlish xenophobes of the USA who circulate vicious E-mail complaining about signs in Spanish and phone menus offering a choice to hear the menu in Spanish. The idea that singing the US national anthem (the melody of which is an English music hall song) in a language other than English is a heresy that has never been committed before has been thoroughly debunked by Geoff Nunberg, but these churls are wildly indignant at the very idea.

What is now happening in the USA is a revival of the 19th-century Know Nothing movement, so called because the members were so secretive that when asked about their party, they would answer, "I know nothing." For my part, I hope that the entire Southwestern USA is returned to the people from whom it was stolen, and when that happens, we can expect to enjoy better food and better music. (Could do without all the fat chicks, though.)
