Description:
Sort of an experiment - a solo guitar piece/improv with basically only one chord.I tried to make the first part sound like 2 guitars by playing a repeating bass riff with my thumb while playing a melody on top.Picture is the Grand Tetons-I was there a couple years ago.I remember messing around playing stuff kind of like this when I was there.

Well &mdash 01/03/08 - 06:21:31 AM
I guess technically there is more than 1 chord-I was just thinking of it all being "D" of some sort. Thanks for your comment!

This is absolutely brilliant playing and a delight to listen to. Shame about the buzz throughout - maybe a grounding issue?
Cheers

Buzz &mdash 01/03/08 - 06:17:54 AM
Sorry about that buzz. The rear pickup on my guitar tends to humm but only when I record thru the computer for some reason.I'm using a Line 6 gearbox- might have something to do with that.If I figure out how to get rid of it maybe I'll re-record it.Glad you liked the song!

Lovely playing &mdash 01/03/08 - 06:14:34 AM
as always. I wish I could even get close to playing so cleanly. Nice melodic touches, too. Riffage, indeed. Great early morning music. Nicely done. Peace.

you liked my one chord song.I'm enjoying your music-thanks!

I can imagine.. &mdash 01/03/08 - 07:43:59 AM
..the mountains in the background, me collecting wood for the fire, you playing the riffs...me thinking: "why isn't HE looking for wood?"...you totally oblivious as I steam under my calm demeanor. Ax in hand...
Camping...love it...
Don't have headphones. Don't hear any buzz through my speakers, though.
Totally love this. You get so many tones off that electric setup. And your separation/variation of the lines is awesome.
Thanks. Real nice listen.

OK &mdash 01/04/08 - 06:37:09 AM
put down the ax and calm down.I'll help with the wood collecting-just let me finish playing this song...
Have a great new year thanks for checking out my music.

1 guitar??? &mdash 01/03/08 - 07:46:33 AM
Smooth and tastefully played as always, and it sure sounds like 2 guitars! I'm really impressed that this is a solo work... wow!

FWIW, the part that I enjoyed the most was where you play with what sounds like a middle-eastern scale (flat 7, flat 2); it is really unlike the rest of it, but extremely cool.

[ Reply to This ]
Actually &mdash 01/04/08 - 06:49:49 AM
it's mostly a diminished scale starting with a 1/2 step.(h,w,h,w,h,w,etc.)I probably played some other notes by accident.
I am totally enjoying the c.d. of Daniel Bolshoy-what a great player, and your composition is fantastic. If there is any way that you could get David Russell to hear that I bet that he would play it.Unfortunately itunes does not list composers on the cd so you are not credited!
Have a great New Year-thanks for your comments!

It Stands &mdash 01/03/08 - 08:58:15 AM
out a mile that you just love playing that guitar. It's as though it's just another limb you play so naturally and it gives so much pleasure to us. This is so great and 'clean'... apart from the very very slight buzz through my speakers, but it didn't spoil it one bit, regards M

I'm glad &mdash 01/04/08 - 06:59:07 AM
that you like listening to it.I've done countless gigs playing background music at parties where no one listens at all. It's nice to get feedback from people who actually heard without laughing and clinking glasses covering it up!
Have a great New Year!

creative work out &mdash 01/03/08 - 09:15:51 AM

Being a &mdash 01/04/08 - 03:52:14 PM
huge Duane Allman fan I didn't like Derek Trucks when I first heard him- I thought he was too much of a copy.I really like some of the recent stuff I have heard,he seems to have found his own voice. If you haven't heard it you should check out the album "Frogwings". The band has Derek and Jimmy Herring on guitar.Herring takes a couple of extended solos that are just ridiculous.Derek sounds great too. Thanks for the comment!

Ya know Mark there's an old story &mdash 01/03/08 - 08:38:51 PM
about this guitar player sittin' in a bar playing just one chord. When one of the patrons ask why he only plays that one chord, he just smiles and says, "because I found it, all them other guys runnin' up and down the neck are still lookin' for it"

nuff said! Apparently you have found it, and in spades. This sounds creative, warm, and wonderful. Very good my friend.

That &mdash 01/04/08 - 05:16:39 PM
happened to me once when I was playing "Get up Stand up" by Bob Marley in a bar band(Whole song is just Cm).Thanks for the joke-I can always use more musician jokes.Do you know the one about the fireman, policeman and guitarist meeting St. Peter at the gates of Heaven?

pickin' and a grinnin' raga &mdash 01/04/08 - 08:32:02 PM
i'm kind of thinking of a country raga is going on here.

sitting cross legged with a bunch of incense sticks poking out of the campfire an a pot of chili simmering.

really nice Mark!

I always thought that &mdash 01/05/08 - 08:57:07 AM
a sitar would go nicely with Garth Brooks act.He could have the sitar player fly over the audience while doing a solo, then land and smash it to pieces.Since Garth is no longer touring maybe I'll email the idea to Kenny Chesney.

Great Work &mdash 01/05/08 - 12:20:43 AM
Really well done. Makes me want to do more fingerstyle guitar stuff, or at least get better at solo guitar stuff. keep up the good work

[ Reply to This ]
Thanks &mdash 01/06/08 - 10:48:51 AM
If you are interested in fingerstyle there is a book by Ken Perlman called "Fingerstyle Guitar" that is good. It's mostly old blues and ragtime styles (In Tab). Also you should consider learning to read music (If you don't know how)and learn some classical guitar- "Solo Guitar Playing" by Noad is really good. Thanks for checking out my song.

Sorry to take so long, Mark... &mdash 01/05/08 - 03:10:38 PM
The iMac has been in for repair again....

I have to say that I really love this. A lot of people are commenting on what it reminds them of, and I'm going to join right in...

It reminds ME of those dual-improv things that John Renbourn and Bert Jansch did back in the day, where Bert would be playing a repeating figure off a chord while John played single lines...

Except of course that here, you're doing both parts...

AND you never sound like anything's extraneous, or anything's showing off...

Gratefully loaded into the iPod, and the Mark Stunkel Playlist...

Always glad to hear your insightful comments. As far as the video goes, how about if I mime along to a backing track like they do in real videos? you and Fran could be dancers in the background.

first off, &mdash 01/05/08 - 09:17:07 PM
the buzz is what makes the song so authentic. second, we need to work out some type of ichat video lessons. i'll pay just to watch you play this stuff...yeah, the soloing is very eclectic. yeah, the buzzinb gives it an analog feel, making this one an instant classic. as soon as i get myself an ipod, i am gonna DL your entire library....

one more thing; &mdash 01/05/08 - 09:24:33 PM
i gave this all 10's, and i will tell you why. it takes a great deal of balls to sit down, record something, and post it. in whatever form, style or level of talent. second, i think you are an extremely talented individual. third, i dont believe in voting on my page, because my music is so genre specific, it does not get the attention it would if i were a more well rounded player. but i gave your all 10's because there are alot of kids playing guitar now-days who are not even touching on this style of music, and i think the reason is there is not enough of it done well right now. even in the country genres, many new country bands are merely mimicing the power rock bands of the 80's more than the bluegrass and delta blues of the pioneers. you deserve all 10's for being a purist, and a master of your craft. and on a side note, it is an honor each time you even take a listen to my metal tunes, and an even greater honor when you comment. thanks for posting here, it is a true inspitration.

I really &mdash 01/06/08 - 02:10:56 PM
appreciate your support. Can't really say I am a purist-my ipod has Ozzy,Zeppelin,Beatles,Bach,Frank Sinatra,Louis Armstrong,Chet Atkins,Muddy Waters,Stravinsky,Aretha Franklin,Van Halen... I must saw one of the reasons that I don't listen to much new hard rock/metal is that I get bored with low-tuned guitarists who play only power chords or fast solos.Page or Rhoads would play a real heavy song followed by "Dee" or "The Rain Song".Plus the blues influence seems to be pretty much gone. Also I'm not a fan of "growling" angry vocals.I was real happy when I discovered your page-a metal vocalist who actually sings!

this is so great &mdash 01/05/08 - 10:47:49 PM
i am so astonished.....

i love every second of this....great guitar playing....

the buzz is prolly cuz you are sitting too close to your monitor?? Try turning the monitor off right before you hit record....or if you can...move farther from the monitor....

now you owe me a lesson.

there is also a software plug in by BASF i believe, called SoundSoap...ask alimar...

GREAT man!!!

deepest respect

My doctor recommended I get more "riffage" in my diet, so here I am! Ha ha...

Very pleasant sonic experience. Almost like pre-"Workingman's Dead" Jerry Garcia in places. This really took me back. Thanks so much!

Be well!

I would &mdash 01/06/08 - 09:12:07 PM
recommend that you download the song, burn it onto a cd,then crush the cd into little pieces. You can then sprinkle it on your cereal.
I'm a definite Garcia fan.Who cares if he was sometimes sloppy and made mistakes- he was always trying to be creative. He drew from a huge variety of music...blues,jazz,country,bluegrass,rock.You can hear him play 2 notes and know it's him.
Glad you liked my song.Thanks!

I would love to have the skill to make his mistakes!

He is missed. It's cool that his musical spirit lives on in the hearts and fingers of those who loved and admired him.

Mighty meandering. Like the kind done when getting a new guitar and seeing what she's capable of.

The buzz was a little annoying at first, but mentally tuned it out and went on with the pleasant ride. Sounds like this was done in the wee hours of the morning well after the cats and dogs have been asleep for awhile. It's nice when the mood takes one over eh?
