Description:
This is a tune I wrote for Taylor Morgan and all my friends here at MacJams. Posted it before Christmas. Bit of a story behind it:
On the suggestion of a "cohort", I've re-mixed it. The original had the vox and guit dropped into a master and left that way. This version's got the two together with a slight dash of reverb wash over. And paprika...
I liked it the first way...and the difference is pretty subtle...but I like this, too. Maybe a shade more...
Maybe Taylor will drop by and check it out...

Tailor MadeMusic and lyrics by Bob Prince

I've got a secret
I don't plan to keep.
I've hidden it
inside this song.
It ain't meant for laughter
or makin' folks weep.
If you follow,
I'll help you along.
Not too loose
or too tight.
Tailor made.
Fits just right.
Time for a clue
'cuz you passed it
you see:
some tunes I write
don't come from me.
(instrumental)
Not to loose
or too tight.
Taylor made.
Fits just right.
I've got a secret
that I just can't keep.
So I've hidden it
inside this song.

talkin about reverb ...it has a charm to use it
and here realy work fabulous to give this sweet
song a new dimension ..a classic my freind what
to say ..KUDOS !!
guitapick
...I'm glad you took the time to check out the remix.
but Lou reed comes to mind in the singing. Beautiful guitar playing. I ike how you keep saying the secret is in the song. I like how you have mic to the guitar great mix. Great song!
guitapick
...Lou Reed. A true success story in more than the musical world.
How's the baby? Man...I miss that time. Even the holding/walks at 3:00 am.

Love the simple groove and whimsical vocal/lyric work.Much enjoyed.
guitapick
...for the listen and taking the time to say "hello".

I liked it before, and I like it now. The difference is minimal, I would say. Still great playing, excellent melody, and clever, humorous lyrics. Nice work. Peace.
guitapick
...for the second listen. I appreciate it very much.
I know the difference is small. Find that it's more noticable on a nice pair of headphones or louder on a nice stereo system.
Just that the voice blends a bit better with the guitar in this mix, IMO. Like they're both playing in the same room. Which they are.
I've almost gotten this piece to the point where I can actually perform it live. It's been hard for me to learn to sing and play at the same time.

...Great tune, great playing, and such a comfortable feel to this simple melody.
Peace.

guitapick
...thanks for commenting. Please see my response to dajama, above your cautionary avatar (cool picture).

...between the crafty played acoustic and the unpretentious way of singing. It works for me. Yes, Lou Reed comes to my mind as well. Simplicity rules here, so beautiful. Bravo Bob!

I should learn how to do this mixing thing... I do like this version a little more than the 1st-the reverb fills it out a bit.Great playing and great song!
guitapick
...right! Nose to the grindstone! Chin up! Pip pip!
Your stuff sounds fantastic...I'd be curious to hear how you record it.
Moviz
the first time and I like it now. Your voice sounds really warm and personal and is ideal for this kind of song. As always the guitar is fab, regards M

loved this Bob the first time round and have heard it a few times since on my ipod. This really is a very lovely song and your playing and vocals are exquisite. Production sounds like perfection to me.
Cheers

guitapick
...a bit self conscious about re-posting...don't normally (and I've remixed a couple of others which I like, too). But decided to give it a go on this one.
Cheers, Len.

I do have to go back to listen to the original, but I am sure this pushes the tune up a notch at least. This version has a softer quality that envelopes both your guitar and your vocal, producing a warm tone that matches your lyrics. Well done, master mix-meister Bob!

...(ziti) was the one that brought it up and I had to agree. Your description of the change is exactly what I was hearing. It's subtle, but really works well. I love this place.
Axgrinder
Troves of awesome chords expertly played! The words fit precisely with the cadence of the song. Very nicely done. You certainly know your guitar my friend. great production to boot. Thanks for a great listen.

guitapick
...you dropped by and checked this out, Ax. Thanks.

Your guitar playing puts me to shame. Really nice lyrics.

I love it just as I did the first one! You play wonderfully Bob and are a good singer as well! Great job!
guitapick
...glad you gave it a second listen. Took the time...Happy New Year...
Scott Carmichael
to find you... your playing is so very good... great!.. there is a warmth that exudes from every piece that you post....
and now I want a rodes NT3... sheesh what a sound...
great recording Bob from top to bottom
guitapick
...for your playing/recording/composing skills, Scott. This is high praise, and I thank you so much.
The NT3 is really something. Most every recording studio I've ever played in has used two of those small, $1000.00 mics placed just so at the neck and about a foot or more from the sound hole. I actually like the sound of the NT3, alone, about 6 to 8 inches or so, directly in front of the soundhole, better than that 2 mic setup. So much so that I'm probably going to re-record some of my older tunes. Neil (jiguma) uses one, too. Great sound, he has...
Keep in mind that the higher end Rodes have a bass rolloff switch which the NT3 does not. It does tend to be a bit bassy. But a tweak of the eq and everything's fine. Both recording and performing with an amp.
As to your journey across the river: I've tabulated costs for this trip, including bridge and tunnel fees, estimated gas costs, entrance fees into my castle estate, and a discounted audience fee (15 minutes...the discount is because you ARE my friend, after all). The grand total, after taxes, comes out to $1,999.99. Guitapick, Inc. takes PayPal, by the way. I'm really looking forward to seeing you.
;)
My...what a lengthy response. Thanks for the listen, Scott.
guitapick
...on second thought, I can remember a time with the 2 mics which came out absolutely beautifully. They placed the mic in front of the soundhole closer. I think that's the key.
eleveneyes
ohhh I like this alot! Intriguing from the very first line.
fabulous guitar work! NICE!
guitapick
...and thanks for your new tune, too. Definitely into it...
guitapick
...faved my own...embarrassed...that would be a nice feature to add; an undo.

pick up the change - but I welcome the chance to hear this wonderful tune again. Really very special.

You know: not every band has LSD 25 in it...hell of a player...never a wrong note...
I think we dropped...let's see, now...hmmm...seem to have lost my watch...or was that my calendar...?
You guys put out some great sounds and I'm looking forward to more...
Mcboy
i would've faved it myself its that good.....nice crystal clear sound...no place to hide......bravo!!!!!!!
guitapick
...thanks for the second listen and the kind words...
I can remember a couple of classical recitals/gigs, early on, where I wished I COULD have found a place to hide...hehhehheh...(I can laugh, now...sheesh)
Glad you liked this, McBoy. Your playing and compositions are a great inspiration to me.

Problem, though; I kept hearing 'Greensleeves', and I missed a lot of lyric as a result...I'm a bear of very little brain and easily confused..
Still lovely
Cheers, Shaky
guitapick
my kid's favorite for years. Genius...
Gave it some thought. The part: "not too loose-or too tight..." etc, has the a similar cadence and progression, in terms of intervals, as the chorus in Greensleeves...sorry if that threw you...
Funny...I'm recording Greensleeves, now...with a twist. Maybe it'll remind you of this tune...hehhehheh...

great playing - fun song
guitapick
...looking forward to hearing your tunes. Welcome to MacJams, Rick.

the easy going style, and how light and full of enjoyment a kind of playful ness that I think a lot of people here are picking up on. The guitar is full of character and the harmonics are so fitting for the ending. The bouncy, walts kind of feel is unique here I think at MJ, have not heard that style, so it's a very welcome addition and adds strength to the ongoing and rising legitimacy of MJ. It's a kind of tune that almost automatically puts any person in a good uplifting mood. The could be feeling low and bam, play this tune and your happy!
Way to go and thanks for sharing
guitapick
...a bit of doing, getting comfortable with this tune, technically. Then I had to play with the interpretation. It's so easy to fall into the "slurpy" thing with a waltz. I wanted exactly what you described: light and playful.
Your saying that that's what came across means quite a lot to me, Bill. Thanks.
Roxylee
You sound so relaxed and make it all sound so easy to do, like you are a naturally one-taker recording artist. I admire that. Your guitar and vocals are simply great. :-)
guitapick
...my favorite teacher's mantra was to make whatever I played sound easy. Paradoxically, that makes it harder for the artist...but I like that. Makes you concentrate harder...which moves you away from self...and I know you know what I mean about that...
Thanks for listening and taking the time to say "hi"...
Lennon714
The guitar work is precise and the melody is haunting, which I think is great. The haunting melody and whimsical lyrics give it a sinister feeling. I don't know the story behind what's going on and I'm probably way off base, but interpretation is fun, right? Great song!
guitapick
You funny, dude...
My wife hates it when I explain my music...aka: please keep your mouth shut when you play out. Says I should just let the people create the pix they see...
...sinister it shall be, my friend...with a side order of sadness, please...
;)
Bob
John Stebbe
Tastefully executed. Guitar work is outstanding. You've obviously spent many years with that instrument, and appear to know it like the back of your hand. No missteps, no intonation problems, plenty of imagination!
Your voice is understated but right for this song. Reminds me of Bobby Goldsboro.
guitapick
That's a very nice thing to say about my guitar work, John...esp. from an outstanding musician like yourself. Thanks...I love my guitars. And the nylon string's my favorite...
We're of the same generation. Haven't heard him in years...but I used to love Bobby Goldsboro. Caught flack about it, too, from my rock 'n roll buddies. Sentimental fool that I am...
;)
See you've got a new one out...must travel in that direction right...now...
caroline
simple and beautiful - thank you for pointing me in this direction

Ah, what skilled fingers can do! I like the remix. The touches are subtle, but they show up on the cheap laptop speakers. I 'll listen with the phones later.
Bravo,
Stephen
guitapick
Yeah...it's subtle...but I like it.
Very nice of you to check both tunes out. Thanks.
rsorensen
cool lyrics, well performed. Great track and remix!
guitapick
...tanks, dude...
bronco
Muy bueno my friend! Superb song construction and guitar playing. So melodic and soothing with your quiet vocal being just right!
guitapick
Gracias, hombre... cuidadoso reventando esos caballos....
Glad you liked it...you know, I used to know a cowboy who did the rodeo circuit...guy really knew horses (and did NOT like bulls)...you into that at all?
You took my breath away its really beautiful.
Oh how very 'Delightful' what a sweet ditty of a song;
what a really sweet sounding Guitar, you play extremely well too
I love the way you sing say and play the guitar too,
' I've got a secret that I just can't keep so I've hidden it inside this song
Those words are just 'Magical' All the lyrics are great too.
Dee.
guitapick
I'm really glad you liked it...esp the vox/lyrics. I just started writing/singing lyrics less than a year ago...so I'm not totally comfy in that area...
My guitar thanks you, too...she's a very nice lady, she is...love her dearly...
lupiroz
of acoustic guitar and great composition too, bravo!
guitapick
Ringraziamenti... sono un ventilatore di il vostro, in modo da le vostre osservazioni significano molto a me.
Did I get that right, maestro?
:)
lupiroz
well, Bob, I clearly understood the sense of your translation and I thank you from the bottom of my heart; of course there is a particularly funny remark to do about it, that's to say the italian translation of the word "fan"; the italian for "fan" is......fan, it is one of the many english terms we use directly in their original form but if you ask the online translators what does it mean it says you "ventilatore" that has got a completely different meaning, that's to say: ventilator!!!
You can imagine my initial surprise when I read:
I'm a ventilator of your.........AHAHAHAHAH
A warm hug!!
Lou
Barretok
acoustic guitar. It has some Spanish feel to it. The singing too. I like it very much. It's almost as if it was sung by an Argentinian (and I mean it well). A little less bass in the vocals would work great. I'm a fan.
B
guitapick
...THIS is a timely response, man...
Few nites ago, I listened to this on my real nice home system with my newly repaired subwoofer and was very bummed to hear my voice on the floor while my guitar did it's thing at ear level...
"Back to the drawing board", I groaned...
I shall play with the bass on the voice and "see what we can see", as they say...thanks for the comment...means a great deal to me...nice tip, hermano...
And, yeah: I love Spanish guitar...and all the styles derived from it...
sloparts
But for the life of me I can't figure it out. It sounds familiar, as in a piece of Classical Music familiar, but the actual piece just won't come to mind. I have a feeling that sometimes you will take part of a classical piece and wrap in a more modern genre, put the lyrics to it and you have a really great song. I could be wrong, but I think that's what you did here.
That said, Bob I would have liked to have heard a little less bass in the vocal, and a slight touch of reverb and maybe just a hint of echo on the vocal as well.
Never the less. an outstanding piece as it is Bob, Kudos to you my friend.
Ed
guitapick
...I'll be making those changes to the vox soon...I agree about the lessening of the bass and will try out a bit more reverb and (maybe) the delay...definitely needs some work.
When I first wrote this, the opening bars reminded me of the intro to "Feed the Birds" from "Mary Poppins"...can't tell where it comes from, sometimes...but this one's here..that's for sure...
:)
Thanks for taking the time, Ed.

This mastering takes the edge of some of the edges in your guitar and vocal. You could say that that's good, or you could argue that the original conveys its message just a bit more directly. I mean, this is not a high gloss ultra polished song in character, right? This is simple and direct.
Either way, I like it.
guitapick
....it is meant to be simple and direct...no frills.
I think I've discovered what the true culprit here is: my voice is low. The guitar isn't as much so. When I listened to it on my stereo with recently repaired sub-woofer, the vox came out at floor level and the guitar at ear level.
AKA: I have ALOT to learn about recording my voice...I'll be playing around with this, very soon.
Thanks for the drop by, Vic...
Bob6stringer
Great tune. Your simple vocal delivery serves the rich string-work very well. Reminds me of a skightly dewatered Leo Kottke's on "Great Big Boy," an album (from late 80s? early 90s?) in which he tells some great stories with a lighthearted air to them.
guitapick
...I've always been a big Kottke fan...and one thing we have in common is that neither of us is too crazy about our vox...but not to the point that we'd scuttle it...
I appreciate the visit, Bob...I'll drop by your house soon...thanks.
dirigent
I love the atmosphere in your track, it's wonderful :-) Bravo!
guitapick
Thanks...I've been doing some serious work on the vocal eq, the past couple of days and am really happy with the difference...much more air to it...got so much to learn.
I appreciate the kind words. I love this song...can never tell where they're gonna pop up, can ya...?

bluesy work Bob. I really enjoyed the tune, its playing and your quite understated singing. Excellent mix as well.
Best,

guitapick
...I'm refining my mixing technique and like what's coming out. This and "Then the Rain", specifically, have been ongoing projects which I'm seeing some cool results on...
Very happy to have seen/heard your latest...have missed your sounds...
Remark80
I like the mix of classical guitar with John Prine style vox.
guitapick
...you couldn't have hit the nail more on the head. I'm a complete classical guitar freak and I've always l-o-v-e-d John Prine's work...great call, hombre...
This applies to everything we do with passion, with love.
I can see this is you... Masterful Played and technically
outstanding... no flies on you my Man.... reeeally Cool.
I..........LIKE IT..............
