Description:
I read, a few days ago, that Karlheinz Stockhausen had died. This spooked me a little, as I'd only been listening to his music/creations a few days before, from his earliest recorded pieces through to his last recorded pieces.

This mix is one of the many I've completed over the Christmas break, and seemed appropriate as my tribute to this innovative modern composer. Together, him and Glass have made my ears sing, sometimes out of key.

This piece has only three instances of the U-he Zebra2 synth, all playing phrases programmed by me.

The mix was then put through various effects, in Reaper2, and what came out is what you hear.

Karl and the gang... &mdash 01/04/08 - 07:21:37 AM
Another inventive soundscape that is impossible to not fall into. You have been going through a creative burst and the output is totally unique in spite of other influences. I always look forward to your work.
Peace.

Thank Paul.... &mdash 01/04/08 - 02:24:24 PM
I search for new angles on familiar things.

This piece had a bed of 'normal' structure, with a renegade 'tune bit' or melody (of sorts).

The melody grates at times, but I thought that this was in keeping with Stockhausen's 'style' and/or philosophy.

Take care.

Very interesting &mdash 01/06/08 - 04:44:33 PM
I am only slightly familiar with Stockhausen. Did he ever use synths like this in his music?
This reminds me so much of some of the EVP soundscapes the Mysti and I have done, but filtered thru the sytnth backs of Vangelis or Isao Tomita
Excellent stuff

Stockhausen...... &mdash 01/06/08 - 05:54:59 PM
Hi Bryn

The information that I have is that he produced at least 86 'works for electronic instruments' between 1959 and 2004, including synths and other sound devices.

I have 186 tracks, from many periods of his life, that I pick at, randomly, to get a cross-spectrum feel for his type of work. Some of it is not my cup of tea, and those tracks I'll listen too later this year. The rest is 'different' or 'experimental' as they say here at MJ's.

With the tracks that I'd already heard, and my thoughts about this mix, I thought it would be an easy way to pay tribute whilst keeping in the spirit of some Stockhausen works.

Some of your/M's work is very similar to what I enjoy making, so I'm not surprised you found a comparison. (I always d/l or record your tracks for in-depth appreciation) and I do mean ALWAYS.

Currently I'm 'into' Vangelis in a BIG way. Blade Runner has always given me a thrill, from the first time I heard it (and listen to it still) having heard the BR Trilogy CD set a few times over the Christmas break.

The work of Tomito/a does not bring anything to mind that I've heard, unless he did the 'Snowflakes are Dancing' album of Debussy's music, on Moogs. I have this on my ipod and listen to it regularly.

Take care and thanks for stopping by.

Fitting &mdash 06/12/08 - 01:50:05 PM
A fitting tribute, reminiscent of early Kraftwerk and mid-'70s Tangerine Dream.

Hi Ergonem...... &mdash 06/18/08 - 09:58:45 AM
Thanks for your kind words.

I didn't appreciate everything that Stockhausen did but this evoked the spirit of some of his work so I thought it was fitting to upload it when I heard of his passing.

Take care.

Paul
