Keywords:
the Thin White Duke done too many Thin White lines (1)art rock (24)improv (47)
Description:
The other day I was listening to Roxy Music and David Bowie, thinking about what awesome rhythm sections they always had (especially considering they were "art rock" bands). Then Bud sent me this beat that he had put together, and I dragged it into GB and just started jamming over the top of it. I picture Bowie running late to the show, hung over from the night before. The promoter is pissed, so Eno and the band start jamming without him. Bowie shows up at the end of the song, takes the stage and says "Good Evening Berlin" and they launch into "Look Back in Anger." The crowd never even knows it wasn't planned.

Bud is a crazy man, you should have seen the files for this. There are a whole slew of drum loops that he cut up and layered together. I don't know how to even begin to think along those lines. thanks for throwing this my way Bud.

Hardware:
intel mini mac, m-audio 49e keyboard, whatever Bud used (you'll have to ask him)

Software:
GB4, Eve soft-synth, free Alpha soft synth, jam pack 4

Very cool &mdash 01/04/08 - 07:22:56 PM
This could indeed be an outtake from Low or the infamous 'Enowie' bootleg that I have never been able to find

Bravo

This is beautiful. Great composition from the two of you. I was expecting to hear a great male voice to go with this. Hope that might be in the works sometime.

But this is brilliant on its own.

hey estellie &mdash 01/05/08 - 06:45:09 PM
thanks for the listen. i came up with a vocal melody for it, but was really liking it as an instrumental (although there is talk of a vocal version). thanks so much for the comment.

thin duke &mdash 01/04/08 - 08:20:32 PM
what a wierd coincidence.
The other night i was watching "the man who fell to earth" w/Bowie. who was in his red hair stage. which in turn made me think of the "low" album which i haven't listened to for years, considering the turntable is long gone. Then you post this little number. That kind of completes the circle.

Bud may be crazy, but he's OK in my book.

very enjoyable Michael, i dig it.

how was that movie (watching it 63 years after the fact)? i can't even remember any of it, it's been so long. i love that period though. i can hear him in the studio: "just turn the flanger on and hit record." thanks for stopping by.

thanks for listening &mdash 01/06/08 - 09:45:30 PM
you know I thought about adding vox, but was just getting into it the way it is. although I just sent the track to Steve earlier today, we'll see what he does to it.

a warm &mdash 01/04/08 - 09:44:19 PM
Berlin evening. That picture combined with this jam made me think close encounters. Very hypnotic and wildly creative track. Outstanding mix

close encounters? &mdash 01/06/08 - 09:47:21 PM

Sound(bed)garten &mdash 01/05/08 - 01:57:00 AM
Wonderful soundbed - the drums are ace, and the layers of sound really cold/ blank East Berlin.

Oddly enough. I'm of to Berlin next week.

This is a great instrumental, but O must admit I'd love to play about with this some time - if you guys dont mind me playing about with it, I'd love for you to send me the GB file, but i wont be offended if you dont want me wailing on it.

btw, the 2 of you work really well together - doing some powerful work.

steve

Hey Michael.... &mdash 01/05/08 - 03:08:08 AM
This music is superb bedrock for 'something' but exactly what I haven't quite worked out yet.

The 'artifacts' around 1:40 through 2:00 added to the sound and the vocoder-type effect towards the end lent the Bowie connection real credibility.

(Maybe the artifacts were just my hearing playing trick on me or were put there on purpose. Either way everything mixed together very well).

Take care.

Paul

thanks Paul &mdash 01/05/08 - 11:56:47 AM
yes you definitely heard some artifacts in there, and the vocoder stuff at the end was just a synth with no decay ran through a flanger and panned. thanks a bunch for listening.

haven't had a chance to listen to your Stockhausen tribute yet; that's really sad though. he was a ground breaker for sure.

COOL tune &mdash 01/05/08 - 10:52:41 AM
What an awesome beat and thoroughly enjoyed it. The only thing missing is your great voice Michael!

very nice again &mdash 01/05/08 - 01:00:20 PM
Love the intro, subtle bell/xylophone sound. Good drumming, love the snare n tom rolls. The build-up of the song reminds me not of RM, but of Pink Floyd. It has a good pro-longed intro effect, you are waiting for stuff to explode, but it just moves on dangerously close to just that. I can see this song on a festival, I don't know why. I just do, dancing in the moonlight till I can't feel my legs no more (getting so stuck in the mud).

Michael the intro is so dead-on &mdash 01/05/08 - 01:03:44 PM
Berlin/Beno it's great. I love what you've done with the track I sent. I knew if I kept it simple enough you'd take it somewhere cool. I could definitely here Steve doing his thing with this then sending it back to you for backup vocals. I think the results would be awesome.

Great stuff &mdash 01/05/08 - 02:33:23 PM
This is inspirational. I love the sounds and the great sense of something about to happen. Love the drums, and the great interplay between the different keyboard sounds. I have a feeling this could turn into something even more wonderful, though, and i can't wait. Nice work, guys. Peace.

LIke a deer in the headlights when I played this, so encapturing. I wish I had this kind of dicipline to keep it so simple,But rounded and complex at the same time. Great collab you guys. Excellent!

I'm not going to make any comparisons here. I am totally impressed, though not at all surprised by what just happened to my ears. This is excellent. Nice work indeed lads.

Yeah.... &mdash 01/21/08 - 10:13:24 AM
....it's big and moody and very very well produced. A great wandering idea that will sound perfect if/when Steve has added his distinctive voice.
