Description:
Been a long time, I miss this place. Life's been crazy with touring and whatnot, but the road has brought some really great experiences and influences. This tune was borne from a dream and a spirit-singing session this morning shortly after waking. I was specifically told, "write it, record it", and I always listen to the voices in my head, so here it is. 1/4/08
Lyrics:
woman, O woman
when will you join me
when will you join me
down on my knees?
woman, O woman
I have forsaken you
I have forsaken you
forgive me please
I will move on
I will move on
come heaven or hell
I will always move on
woman, O woman
when will you testify
when will you testify
all of your sins?
woman, O woman
your hands are dirty
your hands are dirty
forgiveness will rinse them
I will move on
I will move on
come hell or high water
I will always move on
spirit, O spirit
speak to me again
speak to me again
deep in my dreams
spirit, O spirit
whisper in my head
whisper in my head
these words come as screams
I will move on
I will move on
come sunrise or sunset
I will always move on
singer, O singer
bathe in the water
bathe in the water
of this living river
singer, O singer
wash away darkness
wash away darkness
with one Light forever
I will move on
I will move on
with one Light forever
I will always move on

Absolutely stunning &mdash 01/04/08 - 10:42:24 PM
I'm really floored by this, Bing. You did so much with just you and some percussion and demonstrated what an excellent, excellent singer you are. Your melody is terrific, especially as it was coming right out of you and not building from a chord structure that already existed. Let's not even talk about how great your pitch is, because I'd have to drag out the thesauras to look up some extra superlatives and that thing is heavy.
It's a very moving lyric. Thank you for giving us this song and enabling downloading. [ Reply to This ]
Heh-heh &mdash 01/05/08 - 11:53:26 AM
Thank you so much, Lisa! I can't take a lot of credit for this song, unless you count me as a midwife. I don't even know what key it's in, it never got checked against any instruments. You know how it is when you're working on a tune and it just feels like...dictation? This truly was a gift of the spirit - I'm happy to share it, thank you for listening! [ Reply to This ]
Coincidence?? &mdash 01/05/08 - 07:53:57 AM
Last night I was looking through my favorite artists list and asking myself "whatever happened to...?". Let's just say your name was included on that list.
Good to have you back- especially with such a powerful and spiritual song. I've been very selective about the songs I've been downloading lately but this is a keeper in every sense!
Welcome back, Bing! [ Reply to This ]
That just brought up... &mdash 01/05/08 - 11:58:06 AM
...images of a "where are they now?" feature, LOL! Where does the time go? I'll have to admit lurking a bit over the past few months, but didn't realize that my last posting was in mid-summer of 2007. Life's been a whirlwind, but as I've been teaching and working in the studio, MJ is always on my lips, whether citing where I learned such-and-such, or advising people to check it out. It's an honor to be downloaded - I hope the song continues to be a blessing to you - thank you for *your* blessing! [ Reply to This ]
Good to hear... &mdash 01/05/08 - 10:19:22 AM
...your stuff, again, Bing. Glad you're touring/working, though.
Smart guy...good that you have the ear to listen to the inner voice...
Love the harmonies at the end.
Peace,
Bob

Thank you, very kindly! I don't which is busier for you, creative-wise, winter or summer. Winter has always been a much-anticipated woodshedding period for me; it's much harder to hear the voices within the din of travel. The touring has been fun, lots learned, but I do love how it just, literally, chills come December. Thanks again - I'm looking forward to catching up here. [ Reply to This ]
Glad you're back! &mdash 01/05/08 - 11:58:11 AM
This is a great spirit song. Simple melody is great and singable, and the additional embellishments are very welcome. Everything fits together so organically! Lyrics are strong!
Your voice is strong and sure here. Thanks for posting this. I hope we don't have to wait as long for your next song:) [ Reply to This ]

Big mahalo, big thanks to you! Production on this one was interesting, not the usual flow. Trying to get the hand-claps sounding right is my lingering issue - I may re-track those with a condenser mic instead of the SM58. Thank you for listening. : ) [ Reply to This ]
Outstanding &mdash 01/05/08 - 02:37:15 PM
This is a great piece of music. The spirit that brought this knew what they were doing! What a great performance. Your voice is rich and expressive, and you do an outstanding job on this. I particularly like the interplay between the backing vocals and your use of harmonies. I'm very glad I stopped by to check this out. It put a smile on my face. Kudos. Thanks for sharing. Peace. OK now.... &mdash 01/05/08 - 02:39:25 PM
I just gave your your fourth 10 vote... but, my word, this song, if any, deserves a shot at a perfect score. Bing, this encompasses so much... a cappella, soul, gospel, rhythm & blues, blues. And all of of performed to the T! (Whatever that means) Beautiful dream and a beautiful song.
By the way, a friend of mine who is the activity director at a convalescent home asked me to compile different versions of Auld Lang Syne on a CD to play during their New Year's Eve dinner hour. Your two versions were a prominent part of the mix... the only artist with two. So now you have a growing fan base in Santa Barbara with the over 60 crowd!!
Cheers,

Mahalo nui loa! &mdash 01/05/08 - 03:48:39 PM
Thank you, Jack - I really appreciate that, and I'm sure the spirits do as well. I just feel incredibly blessed to have been the vessel for this tune, it's unlike anything that's ever come from this songwriting factory. Thanks for some of the genre reflections - I was honestly having a tough time placing some of the influences. It definitely stems from out of the slave spirituals/work songs category and all that follows.
Thanks for including the "Auld Lang Syne" tracks on your compilation - glad I didn't trim my song list before then! I love playing for older folks - a good portion of the people at the festivals that I play are 60+ and they are the best audiences EVER! Well, them and screaming, hot twenty-somethings, but I rarely play to those crowds anymore. LOL!
Thanks so much for your response to this - and I share the praise with the Great Spirit who enables me. One love! [ Reply to This ]
Wow! &mdash 01/05/08 - 07:45:55 PM
Welcome back! You sound a little like Richie Havens in this, and that's of course meant as praise. There's a sort of down-home quality to your vocal on this that seems a little different from your usual stellar technique, and maybe it's just the soul peeking through. Very soulful! [ Reply to This ]
Whoa! &mdash 01/05/08 - 11:07:30 PM
Wow, thanks, Jim! Richie Havens! That guy's intense. Have you heard his version of "Tombstone Blues"? My journey has led me to this point; it's like musical re-birth and I'm having a blast. So, it's more "true" of a performance than I've delivered in the past - it's also more in my range, since I'm not nailed down to my usual tunings of CGG or DAD on dulcimer (and I'm still not sure what key this song is in - I may never check.) Thanks again, man! [ Reply to This ]
WOW Bing ! &mdash 01/06/08 - 01:32:20 AM
This one just "blows me away" .... those harmonies .. the lushness .... my fav the HUMMMMMMS ..... somewhat reminiscent if the begininning of one of the tuvan throat singing or Male Bhuddist Choir tunes I enjoy so much ! LUVVED IT LUVVED it .... your voice is truly an instrument to be reckoned with ! I wish I had the patience and dedication required to put out something like this ..... fabulous my friend ... so nice to see you back in the game ! [ Reply to This ]

Thank you for the enthusiastic review - throat singing is cool. : ) To me, it sounds a little like "Little Drummer Boy". LOL! You're too kind dear - and yes, you could totally put something like this together. We gotta do another collab one of these days. Hope you're doing well, sweetie! [ Reply to This ]

I'm glad you stopped in... I've been away quite a bit myself... but there's always time for you... this is an extraordinary post my friend... this has the feel of an undiscovered spiritual from darker days in our history... but we know there is a form of slavery that has only one remedy... you have peeled back a corner here my friend [ Reply to This ]
Mmmmm &mdash 01/07/08 - 01:55:32 AM
Peeling back a corner, Scott - what a spot-on observation, brother. Thank you. God is amazing and I find myself stunned in the emergence of this tune. The sensation reminds me of that old Daniel Amos song - "as the world turns, slaps me hard!" Thanks for listening - [ Reply to This ]

Would you believe... &mdash 01/07/08 - 02:09:29 AM
...those were first takes? I don't either. Never have I been so at a loss as to what to do next, but I just kept plopping tracks down, in weird order, until it all just sat there as it sits there now. My critical ear wants more of a minor interval in the first round of harmonies, but my hand was slapped as I even considered retracking. This one don't belong to me, so I thank you and give praise for being adequate plumbing. : ) [ Reply to This ]

...rocked right back in my cheesy office chair...
Every transition just rocking me back further...
Wow, Bing. And me just come from church, too.
And for me, this song is just like a lot of my dreams; it hits me like it's important and powerful and has a great big feeling to it, and yet I can't even pretend I know what's it about or what it's saying or where it comes from...
Lisa's right about your voice and pitch, too. You just have some straight spiritual power, a braveness in your voice, that I envy...
Terrific...

Excellent post Bing - I especially like the harmony sections. Great singing!! At first I wanted to swap around the claps and the kick, but it all fell together nicely as the tune moved on.
Good to see you posting!

What a clean vocal track. You have such great conviction in your voice.
The arrangement is growing on me.
Some of my favorite recordings over the years are songs or albums that grew and grew on me...
I have been making short playlists on my ipod, of songs that i downloaded from MJs and I listened to this as a backdrop to my life the last few days. What a great shuffle up tune...
refreshing
I can so relate to the lyric...

when the songwriting gods speak, you best listen!
This is really well done. There's a lot of power in this song - something that gets understated in a capella music. A capella music can sound flat and unfinished. It's a difficult genre to get right. However, this is done right and it sounds great to me. Very moving.
I especially like how lyrically it starts out a bit more passive (When will you join me... I have forsaken you) and by the middle you're way more aggressive, (Come hell or high water I will always move on). Well done! [ Reply to This ]
Them Gods, they know &mdash 07/11/08 - 12:19:17 AM
LOL! As I like to tell people, when inspiration comes, that bus don't run all night, best to hop on and take your chances. Very rarely does a fully-formed song come strolling into my head, and when this one came a capella, I was more than a little hesitant. No instruments to coach this voice-in-progress? It was daunting, but the conviction of the tune ultimately made it work, though I'm tempted to revisit the vocals since I've gained a bit more in the way of control since then. Thanks for listening and encouraging! [ Reply to This ]
Not fair. Nope. &mdash 04/14/08 - 05:03:25 AM
It isn't fair. You are an amazing musician, you have a powerful and wonderful voice, you play the dulcimer like no one I've ever heard, you compose beautiful music, and now you have voices dictating wonderful music to you! Is it fair? No. But we're all the luckier for it!
This is very powerful stuff. I think the fact that there is no instrumental accompaniment just adds to its power. Although, being someone who likes to tinker with music long past the point when I shouldn't, I think it might be kind of cool to have instruments coming in, maybe one at a time, after a few verses. Maybe a choir too. Know any choirs? :-)

mahalo nui loa &mdash 07/11/08 - 12:24:21 AM
Oh gosh, Clark, thank you very much. I'll tell you, though - the spirits haven't given me much since January. LOL! This tune, as-is, will stand as version 1.0, but I can definitely hear more happening. Perhaps even more verses and then slowly bringing in some other instruments, very organic things like jaw harp, mouth harp, diddley-bow, sounds that would enhance the somewhat period feel of the piece. I haven't performed this one yet - perhaps waiting for the right mixture of players and restraint to make it happen. Thanks again, man. [ Reply to This ]

A bit of Ben Harper? &mdash 07/10/08 - 10:21:09 PM
This is a good spiritual. Though you've a very different flavour to your voice, I hear a Ben Harper influence in the melody and the sparse instrumental treatment. Very nice track you got going on here. I'm wondering if a slightly more immediate recording of your voice might bring a nice intimacy to the vocal. Perhaps a different mic? Regardless, great track here. [ Reply to This ]
need to listen &mdash 07/11/08 - 12:30:13 AM
Thanks for listening and posting - I've gotten the Ben Harper comparison a few times here and there, but confess to have never really listened to the man in-depth. From what I've heard, I know I'd enjoy the journey.By "immediate", what are you referring to? Anything that I can do to improve vocal quality is of great interest to me. I am looking at getting better mics (am using a SM-58 currently), but that comes hand-in-hand with better paychecks. LOL! I appreciate you taking the time to critique, mahalo! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks, Dee! I'm happy that you enjoyed this one - it's very primal and just came out of nowhere, so I can't take much credit for it. If nothing else, it means that I'm listening to those voices in my head at the right moments. LOL! Thanks again! [ Reply to This ]
