Keywords:
awake (7)rise (4)surface (1)
Description:
Heightened sent me a track recently to collab on - but I was so taken by it's beauty and simplicity that I was hard pressed to play over it or even sing a melody.

Meanwhile - people have been remarking on the poetry of my brother Will's lyrics - so it seemed only right to read a recent poem along with Joe's track.

Joe's music went on to develop into a longer, wonderful and more complex piece of music that I hope he develops further. I used the beginning only and added just a few tweaks and and one synth line towards the end. If you're not familiar with his music - check it out - Heightened
- it's great.

Here's another example of Will's poetry in a musical setting - Times Square 2005

Lyrics:
Awake

heart beating
beneath laced fingers

quiet rise and
fall of breath

sunlight streaming
through the blinds

sparrows chirping
faintly on the fence

morning doves cooing
in the lemon tree

woodpecker tattooing
a utility pole

surface traffic
sighing past the window

steady hum of freeway
in the distance

eyes open

awake!

Good jobs all around. You're becoming a vocal artist. Will's poetry is so accessible.

Thanks for recognizing the connection between Joe's music and my poem. They work very well together and your reading is right on. Nice when it's easy once-in- a-while.

I'd been looking for the right vehicle for this one for a while - Joe's track had the right feel I think.

Very subtle &mdash 01/06/08 - 06:29:21 AM
music which seems descriptive of the hubbub of life going on through an open window maybe and the poetry almost as a commentary, does sit very well here, regards M

So many songs to listen to, so little time..... &mdash 01/06/08 - 11:31:11 AM
That insistent vocal delivery (emotionless, but rhythmic) has a surprising amount of weight. Very delicately structured music (could be an Eno LSP), too. All in all, a very satisfying listen. Thank you.

I'm trying to get a gig as a mac voice for speech text. Eno has already made a mac alert sound.

ears listening &mdash 01/06/08 - 12:14:48 PM
Cool way to describe the awakening process one morning. Recognizing the things I listen for when I'm about to open my eyes. The traffic in the distance, the birds singing and so on. The words seems to have a good match in the chosen piece of music. Easy and relaxed just as the morning sounds usually tend to be... Well done!

What's so nice... &mdash 01/06/08 - 03:20:22 PM
...is the matching of the simplicity between lyrics and soundtrack behind them. Very nicely done, Kevin, Will, and Heightened. Seamless blend of poetry in sound.

the poetry &mdash 01/07/08 - 02:24:32 PM
the poetry sets up the music in the beginning and then gets out to let the music continue to paint a picture that is soothing, uncertain and pensive. A great departure and a wonderful add to your catalog.

Chill Urban Stillness &mdash 01/08/08 - 08:37:10 AM
There's a certain stillness that big cities have at a certain hour just before dawn... (or as still as any big city can ever be). Once, about twenty-five years ago, I took a wee-hours bus into Toronto that arrived around four-thirty am. Instead of heading home, I just walked out of the station downtown, and marveled at a city that seemed so still and quiet in that cold, pre-dawn winter light. There was virtually no traffic, and the only movement was steam rising out of manhole covers on Young Street. I found an all-night coffee shop and sat next to a window until the first bus grunted by, and then... it was over.

This music reminds me of that morning. Also, love the woodpecker too - your bro is indeed a poet of spare colours.

How can you be so prolific? (laugh) As ever, great stuff, Bud... thanks for the moment.

There's a great poem by Wordsworth - Composed Upon Westminster Bridge, September 3, 1802 - where he describes London at dawn just before it comes to life. Very similar to what you experienced. Check it out, and thanks for checking out Awake.

a perfect blend... &mdash 01/12/08 - 06:24:03 AM
of ambient and poetry... It's Saturday morning and the house is quiet... and I'm watching the sky brighten over the lake as i listen... this just hit me right... I'm pretty sure i don't even want to listen to anything else now
