Description:
Estella posted this beautiful a cappella composition back September way last year. I was very moved by the original and asked if I might try to construct some instrumental tracks to accompany it. When those tracks didn't quite sync up, Estella graciously re-recorded her vocal parts to match the soundbed's needs.

I am grateful to Estella for allowing me to tinker away, and for her support and encouragement in making it work.

BRAVO!
WOW - tear duct action from me at the second voice
coming in so simply and beautifully.

john, i salute you for bringing this to a wonderful fullness.
that edgy, minor flavored part amazes me cuz it goes so well with her voice.

estellie - i bow to the beauty of your vocal.
you did such a fabulous job of soaring and letting go.
just a fabulous, soulful delivery.

it's an EXcellent combination of talent.

Now this is sweet!
True soul music of the highest order. The singing is beautiful, and I will be going back to check out the original. But this together with the music is just awe-inspiring. Love the sounds and arrangement - everything complements the other; the music wraps the voices, and the singing gives such meaning and depth to the sounds around it. Production is top-notch. I bow down. Kudos to both of you. Thanks for sharing. Peace.

A great
coming together of talent with the lovely smooth soulful vocals of Estella, punctuated by the brash percussion sounds and the excellent as always, music of John. A brilliant piece, regards M

Some vocals over your tracks. I really like the chord progression and drums. Thanks to Estellie for helping you out, nice results.

well done
I've always liked Estella's excellent singing & lyrics... and your amazing ear for music, so this is a treat. I do think that the drums are a teeny bit busy and distracting in the mix, it makes it hard to focus on the words. But other than that, the harmonies and sounds you chose are delicious. Wonderful work you two!

drums
Eduard, I agree :-) I think their aggression would be tempered if I brought them down in the mix. I appreciate your candor. Thx for listening

perfect
Very impressive how you have constructed and arranged the music to support the a cappella vocals. The drums are especially nifty with the way you use cymbal hits to add power. The mood created by the keys makes me think they would have been present before she made the vocal track, 'cause they blend so very well with her singing. Perfectly balanced with the vocals.

Hi thoddi
If it seems like the music was present before I did the vocals, it's because it was! KTB's composition inspired me to re-record the vocals to compliment the new music.

The problem with MJ
... is there's not enough of Estellie on it.... so this is a great gift. I loved this track so much, it inspired the lyric for 'Deep', a forthcoming collab with Racerat. This is a great treatment, with another wonderful vocal from the lady herself.

fab work guys (and gals!)

John, this is so generous...
It really feels like you've tried to serve the song and the singer here, and it feels really respectful to me...

Reading the drum comment above, I wonder if a simple change to a slightly more subdued kit might do the trick...

Neat one...

Ed
ktb said 544 days ago (January 6th, 2008)
actually
Ed, thats an even better option for me to try. The kit name for this was "Burn" :-), I could choose a more studio type kit to soften the contrast. Good call

thx as always for lending an ear

:o)
.. a very satisfying metalamorpha .. metamorphisss ... transformation! ;o)

Really fantastic job on the bed John: dreamy in a 'nature' way ..very fitting, great instrument choices .. I agree on the drum nit: being a touch fierce...that fierce I'd expect some walloping guitars/additional instrument to come in... that is absent.

A keen Estella fan me: beautiful voice, very pure .. and nicely left so in the production too... I might have gone for more 'surround' for the backing vox but that's just a taste thing- I think the re-record paid dividends, excellent vocal performance in this as expected.

Very strong collab, takes the original (which I still like- where did the bongos go? ;o)) some steps forward.

Well done to you both.

/Alan

Good stuff
Great soulful vocals and a cool, sympathetic instrumental backing. It must be difficult to construct an instrumental around an a existing capplla vocal...so very well done there!
Cheers

Steve, this was Estella's doing :-) When I first attempted to sync, not everything lined up. Estella was gracious enough to re-do her vocal to match the bed. Thx for checkin it out

What a good collab!
I like both your and Estella's music a lot ktb, and it's great to hear them together. Classy vocals over a classy bed - what more could a person ask for?

This is a pretty amazing combination of noise makers!

Estellie, your vocals are rich with emotion and absolutely beautiful.

John, your idea to put music behind this is impressive. I really like the feel of the whole thing and think you did a great job.

As soon as the download thing starts working again, I'll have this blasting on my iPod!

blend of talents. love the way that everything fits together, the vocals are perfect for the musical bed (or is it the other way around?). i never would have thought of the chords climbing chromatically under the chorus (oo-oo-oo-oo). I don't know why, but something about the sound of the musical bed kind of reminds me of Prince (not the songwriting at all). maybe it's the heavy drums and synths. this is really nice guys.

more drums
Great tune. Two things that make this tune great? - vocals and the DRUMS! I was thinking that this tune can use an ever bigger drum sound. The contrast between the very active drums and the smooth longer vocal phrases is beautiful, like a tequila sunrise. Drums tones sound midi but performance sounds human. Do you have some sort of humidi device?

Correct!
A Roland TD7 kit. I really value your input Ray. Previous threads on this song had me a little conscious as to the drums sound and volume. Since I didn't really have a bass line per se, I know I might have over compensated by boosting the drums. Then I sort of felt they sat too high in the mix. Still do, but its great to get your comment thx for listening
