Description:
This is a total do-over of a song that I did during my first year here. I was still in the learning process of recording at the time. After awhile i dumped it as well as quite a few others in a spring cleaning a few years ago.

Anyway another one for the space cowboy. I always thought it was interesting how scientists would present ideas of exploring and colonizing other worlds. Yet, the moon still sits there with a vacancy sign posted. go figure.

Lyrics:
I Think Too Much

the man in the moon to old to care
pale gray face only stares at me and you
laughing stars dance in the moonlight
shining brightly til the end of night
they fade away

everyday we think of change
the universe looks just the same
giving me time to think
worlds out there wants me to see
my vision is just to cloudy
to stormy a warning

chorus:
gone are my thoughts of life on mars
it's a place that I never will see
gone are my thoughts of life on mars
it's a place that I never will see
I think to much I'll just pretend

life on mars so long gone
astronauts fly closer to god
floating the black sea
another world do they ask the same
are there others there or is it me
just wondering dreaming

chorus:
gone are my thoughts of life on mars
it's a place that I never will see
gone are my thoughts of life on mars
it's a place that I never will see
I think to much I'll just pretend

sagan says we're just cosmic dust
fine for him what about us
our lives our minds

chorus:
gone are my thoughts of life on mars
it's a place that I never will see
gone are my thoughts of life on mars
it's a place that I never will see
I think to much I'll just pretend

It took me over two years to finally get around to completely redoing this song. Is that being lazy or what. HAHAHA

This just flows so nicely with gorgeous melodies and cool guitars.
An epic and at the same time personal ballad, the changups are plenty yet they all fit perfectly. I think it was a wise redo!

kudos to you for an amazing song!

the original was just okay. But for some reason it has always stuck in my head. so I needed to exorcise that little demon.

tweeking fever last night. In the bouncing process in Logic, to produce the MP3, I went through 11 of them to find a balance that sounded as close to the original file. So much gets lost when there is a lot going on.

I think you've been studying... &mdash 01/06/08 - 01:42:27 PM
...at the Jiguma School of In-Yer-Face Mastering...

This one LEAPT out of the speakers...

And this definitely shows the marks of all you've learned this year...

And this is going to be my only critical comment on your stuff as we enter '08, because I think you know how much I enjoy your playing and your general guitar-craft, and that's this: I always enjoy listening to the songs as they come up one by one, but I think if I opened up my Vic Holman Playlist and started listening to it all the way through, I might find that after a while it would start to sound like One Big Song... If at some point there's going to be a Vic Holman album out there, I'd love to hear some change-ups. And I'm saying that just because I think I would love there to BE a Vic Holman album, and I want to listen through it like I'd listen to Revolver, or Ziggy Stardust, enjoying both the consistencies and the contrasts...

I have been thinking the same. That is part of my new years resolution. As well as writing 2008 on my checks. So, i will be trying different things now and then and see what kind of a mess i get myself into. plus some milder stuff as well.

i think i remember this one! Epic guitar, but with a lovely subdued vocal. Great twist in the chorus... oh, i love the Bowie reference!

Epic song, Vic.

ah, you caught the little joke. he was wondering, but i knew there wasn't life on mars. Life on Mars was the original title to this.

vocals subdued due to cold bug that has been trying to invade my personal space. Maybe try I'll try different vocal in another 2 1/2 years.

Thanks Steve

I actually copped a Mick Ronson trick here. The lead guitar is run through a wah pedal, left in a stationary position, to get that filtered effect that he used so often. Also the harmony guitars is another thing that I picked from those records.

Nice newbie/oldie bro!

A lovely cosmic paean.

Well done as usual.

Take care you ol' Space Cowboy!

BTW: Mr. Sagan knows different now.

During a spring clean two years ago this went with the pile.

It was a more stripped down version. I kept thinking of a total redo of it. just took me a long time.

One Big Song ... &mdash 01/06/08 - 08:03:05 PM
... I find it interesting that EJH says this ... because just last night as I was listening to a lot of tunes by Macjammers I had a thought .... that for a lot of us ... we become recognizable by our style .... and you were one of the people who I thought of as being one that if I heard a Vic Holman song I would instantly recognize it as Vic Holman .... Moorlandt is another Macjammer who comes to mind ... and I suppose I think I throw myself in there too ... as having distinctly recognizable voices and styles ... is this a bad thing? Perhaps what I like most about Macjams is that it offers us the opportunity to experiment and mix it up some and try stuff that might be out of our comfort zone ... I like the Vic Holman stuff whatever you come up with but it might be interesting to hear you stray into some other genres which are at the extreme opposite of where your personal comfort zone is .... looking forward to some craziness from VIC !

voices in my head &mdash 01/07/08 - 10:40:36 PM
funny how you think you may sound different in your head .... but then, the microphone don't lie. oh well.

My plan for this year is to try for some different sounds and arrangements. But then like you say a distinct voice will still ID the artist. It will be interesting to see what I can pull out of the hat this year.

You're not missing much &mdash 01/06/08 - 10:20:13 PM
It's kind of boring there. nothing is heavy, the days are way too short, everything is red. When you go back inside everything has a yellowish green colour to it after all the red.
Anyway, excellent job on the mix. I like the panning synth. Excellent lead work, and tone.
All in all, this is good.
That is all.

Hi Bob &mdash 01/07/08 - 10:57:35 PM
the first one was done over two years ago. It had 2 acoustics for rhythm. And my inexperience at mixing was not that great. Abit muddy and and a few timing issues. The guitar solos was the only that I thought was good. But I had to relearn those.

I'm with you, I'll just stare at the stars and enjoy them.

Love the vocal on this &mdash 01/07/08 - 07:34:00 AM
and great lyrics (I love the line "astronauts fly closer to god, floating the black sea") and - as always! - the guitar work is terrific. Not only is the playing top notch, but you get such great sounds. Great song - wistful and romantic, but filled with clever humor. I don't think I ever heard the original, so I can't comment on the previous recording, but this is outstanding - great mix and production all round. Nicely done. Peace.

I don't know what to write, but I love your style, man.

Hey Dave &mdash 01/07/08 - 11:30:23 PM
I tried a lot of different things in all the sections. I actually had 4 acoustic tracks for the rhythm, for instance. So, it changed quite a bit through the whole process.

Thanks again Dave

i did not hear the original..orignially.. but as for this version, the lyrics impress me alot. they do half the job of sending us into space, outer space and the space inside ourselves i think. Inner space? so kudos on that sir!

Guitars, guitars, guitars... &mdash 01/07/08 - 04:16:06 PM
Vic, (finally got back here to comment)

... amazingly played and mixed on a par with the best here at MJ (not me). And the lyrics are cool, but you you could be singing the phone book on this one, so rich. It just blows me away the sound you get on those guitars and the way you come up with the runs, riffs, and chord structures. You got my respect.

Time for your first CD. Kudos

Hi Jack &mdash 01/08/08 - 09:53:14 PM
I figured if i was going to redo this I better put some thought into it. I tried a variety of ways for the rhythm guitars to go. And quadripilled them to fill out the notes more. i know it sounds crazy. But then I've been called crazy on a few occassions.

[ Reply to This ]
excellent &mdash 01/07/08 - 05:46:48 PM
i love that nasally distortion in the chorus. is that where you used the depressed wah wah? the lines about Sagan cracked me up. ultra rocking track, keep em coming.

[ Reply to This ]
nasinex &mdash 01/07/08 - 11:25:25 PM
the lead guitar has the cocked back wah in a fixed position.
The guitars for the chorus are overdriven rather then full on distortion. I added a high pass filter to tighten them up. Then to fill it out I played five tracks. If I went full distortion it can get muddy. That's from trail and error.

Dreamy! &mdash 01/07/08 - 05:57:14 PM
Sounds like Bob Dylan sings Bowie!
Honestly though this is great stuff, does sound epic. The only thing I don't like is the drums, does quite fit with everything for me. But good work!

dreams of space &mdash 01/08/08 - 10:36:12 PM
thanks. It took some doing to get the big sound. So they were changes along the way. I'll have to give it a listen after a month from it to hear about the drums. I went more for simplicity and live but I could be off on that.

Good stuff vic &mdash 01/07/08 - 08:09:49 PM
You might have hit the limiter a little too hard for my tastes with the final mixdown and lost some of the detail in the mix as a result ... but then again it may be just one of those days for my ears too.

[ Reply to This ]
Thanks Bill &mdash 01/08/08 - 10:48:05 PM
Funny thing is the limiter is set at zero and levels are down, plus I recorded everything a little below normal. But I did pull the levels down more on the chorus since there was more going on, Thinking about it after the fact, I should have also brought the verse sections down a tad. I'll have to give my head a rest from it for a few weeks and revisit it.

Thanks again Bill

Cool song &mdash 01/11/08 - 05:25:53 PM
I liked it a lot even though I'm not a Bowie fan myself. Very nice sounds. Interesting mix and lots going on. My only complaint is that it sounds a little overcompressed. Could just be my ears right now though as I have a rampant cold or the fact I recently read the article about the overuse of compression and am subconsciously thinking about that. It's still great though. Cheers. I'm off to check out some of your other tunes.

Hey Ax &mdash 01/13/08 - 02:55:18 PM
you are probably right, i think too much. But with this nasty weather I have to keep my mind busy. I did tinker around with this quite a bit. originally i had a few acoustic tracks that i dumped and replaced those with 4 clean electrics. and replaced the chorus with four distorted guitars. It's a never ending thought process. why? i got no idea.

Great! &mdash 01/13/08 - 11:43:24 AM
There is some great melody going on here. And the music is, no pun intended, out of this world. The rhythm guitar on the chorus kills me. I can definitely see Bowie doing a song like this.
