For some reason, I never thought I would EVER see any condors in my lifetime (except the caged Andean condors at the zoo.) So I always think of South America when I think of Condors, and thus this flavor of music. But seeing so many of them so close, with video camera available, that was a spectacular end to our vacation!
As for my special inspirational software, she's my reason for being. :-)

Can't believe &mdash 01/06/08 - 02:06:44 PM
they let you get that close to them. It's great that they're making a comeback.
We only have turkey buzzards down here and I did get a photo of a couple of baby's last spring.(they were nesting on the ground)
Anyhow, don't know about Peruvian folk music but, I do know that I like
this little piece. Well done Drak! [ Reply to This ]

Thank you for checking this out and commenting!
You found a turkey vulture nest of babies, and it was on the ground? That's gotta be a cool find... though I wonder how they avoid predators. No place is really safe... the Condor newsletter mentioned that they lost one newly-hatched Condor last month near Big Sur, probably due to a golden eagle swooping down into the nest and carrying the chick off... danged mother nature :-)
I was delighted to see so many and get so close, but also worried about their safety, thus me putting a video of this encounter together to send to the zoo and wildlife society.
This has a vague flavor of the Bolivian/Peruvian folk music style and instrumentation, but their songs are more sorrowful and haunting. I'll work on those aspects on an update :-)

These bird's faces are not of the more beautiful kind, but their soaring flight is great to watch. An image of freedom, if anything. Amazing they let you come that close, must have been fascinating - like the music you have put together to fit the "movie". Sounds great to my ears! I'd enjoy that movie too!

Face the New Year... &mdash 01/07/08 - 01:17:56 PM
Hey, I can't do anything about how I look! Oh, you mean the condors... yes, they are quite prehistoric looking too... "a face only a mother could love", as we say. Perhaps why I felt so comfortable with them. This was a real thrill for me, any time I can get close to nature, and especially if I can capture it on film and share it!
As for the music, yes, it is VERY "Harmony Assistant"-like... that is, it is too MIDI-like and even and stilted, not humanly played. Since I am getting many helpful critiques and ideas for fixing it up, I will give this a second pass and pay more attention to details, variation, dynamics, etc. Thank you as always for seeing what I am up to!

The new Mac is wonderful! Used to take 20 seconds to render a scrolling title... now that takes about 2 seconds... and burning the DVD to a disk image goes from 4 hours to 20 minutes. 3D rendering is blistering too. I'm getting used to Leopard as well, a moderately big (but positive) change. Stay tuned, a trimmed down YouTube video is coming soon. It is unfortunate about the low quality/small size of Youtube vids though, I can tell you that seeing these guys at DVD/TV quality is pretty darned breathtaking.

I always worry when I put any kind of guitar-like thing together, because you'll stop by and hear my feeble attempts... you are extremely generous :-) This was a super-fast sketch to get *something* as a quick background tune for the credits... I spent no time trying to get variation on the strumming, so there is a lot of improvement needed. But I'm glad to know you find it an enjoyable listen, that's a great vote of confidence for me! I shall continue polishing the tune and making the charango sound more like its really being played.

Short and sweet &mdash 01/06/08 - 05:32:32 PM
I hope you find a way to post the video somewhere.
Now productionwise speaking, I find the bass in this track a tad irritating. Is that the bass from the acoustic guitar? The opening makes me suspect so. But it's loud and obnoxious, and the guitar is almost inaudible after the beginning. I would tinker a bit more with the choice of sounds. [ Reply to This ]
wonderful! &mdash 01/07/08 - 04:17:42 PM
Great critique and helpful comments, as always Victor! I was very hasty in putting this together, and paid very little attention to the mix and levels and dynamics & choice of instruments, other than a quick couple settings. The bass guitar was actually an electric, because it had more bite, but I think you're right, too much. And the little ukelele-like charanga does get swamped, and I didn't arpeggiate/strum ALL the chords, just the first on each bar, so I have a lot to tweak. Thank you for the suggestions, I shall make those adjustments on an upcoming better version.
As for the video, I'm editing like crazy. One version of the video has our trip with pix of quail, woodpeckers, campsite, hiking trails, elephant seals, and a little bit of condor footage. Another version is the full 17-minute condor-only version. Now I'll make a trimmed down 6 minute version for YouTube as well. And now I'm wondering if I should put the elephant seal footage on YouTube too, its pretty cool. [ Reply to This ]
Hiya Drak, &mdash 01/06/08 - 07:06:29 PM
That pan flute sound is awesome; I would look for more of a strumming sound on the guitar and definitely some hand held rhythm instruments for authenticity. The chord progression seems right on. I would be very interested in seeing the video; you are one lucky guy. The pictures are great, thanks for posting.

woohoo &mdash 01/08/08 - 10:26:31 AM
Hi Joe,
thank you very much for listening so critically and giving me feedback, this is what I love to find out about. And although I admit this was a very quick first pass that I've shared, and I have been itching to do my usual polishing on this, your specific suggestions help me figure out what to work on. I just dropped un-strummed guitar (charango) chords in there, and only started apreggiating them, I need to do the up-down strumming to all the chords and vary the strumming a bit. I intentionally left the percussion out, because... uh, I'm really terrible at inventing percussion rhythms :-) But I'll see what I can do... I'll go back and listen to my Andes folk CDs again and get some ideas. And the pan flutes are right out of the awesome "Ben Boldt 24-pack" instruments here on Macjams... I need to do some tweaking of melody and dynamics on them too, but the first pass wasn't too bad.
Thank you again for your helpful thoughts! I'm off to play with it some more... and fold the update into the YouTube video, which I'm working on too.

Nice credit music - &mdash 01/06/08 - 07:36:37 PM
The pan pipes are not bad! Actually, very good for woftware instruments. The guitar is pretty good, but I agree with whomever said it could use some more of a 'strum' sound. If you are going to polish this up, The mix could back off just slightly from the pan pipes, and I'd love to hear the little high guitar sound more. (I can't remember the name of the little guitar- ack! alzheimers.)

more great suggestions &mdash 01/08/08 - 10:31:48 AM
Thank you Kristine! The Bolivian armadillo-shell guitar-thing is called a "charango" (so many instruments to know!) I didn't listen too carefully to the last mix before mp3-ing, because I was in a hurry to make the family video, so you are right, the levels are off... I'll back the pan flutes off a bit, and fix the sound of the bass (per Vic), and I need to rework the strumming charangos (arpeggiating them, varying the rhythm a bit, and bringing them up a little.) Stay tuned for an update in a while...

But then, condors aren't very pretty unless they are soaring... All that having been said, I still liked the pan pipes and the general feel of your track. It will be fun to see where this goes.

Well, in a kinda way. Very effective 'NeoSchwAndean' instrumentation, and the slide show is a real treat!
Personally, I'd like to hear a slightly longer introduction prior to the pan flute melody, but I guess, you've purposely consolidated the piece into this quaint 'Eduardian' sketch for a reason!
I noticed that there's 1 condor in your photo sequence eyeing you with particular interest- (dragon for breakfast anyone?) ;-)

Less than a week into the new year, and already a submission from you! I tae it you are aiming for one composition a week for 2008? Good plan!
Short and very sweet! Definitely could be longer... the form is A | A (I think?), and it would be a relatively simple matter to make it A | A' | B | A (i.e., vary the repetition of A, and add a contrasting B section)... if you wanted to lengthen it, that is. Also, as somebody said, the intro could be longer... but the material you have here is very, very good! I really like it. [ Reply to This ]

I have a feeling I was just in the right place at the right time.. although now that they are surviving their release fairly well (and California has banned ALL lead shot in hunting rifles, so the condors won't continue to get poisoned from eating lead in abandoned carcasses)... this may be a more common sight. I hope they can strike a good balance with humans. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the music... This was indeed a magical experience for us. And I'm excited to have caught it on video so I could share a little taste of what we saw. Again, the full DVD-quality video (including more footage of the coastline, elephant seals, redwoods, etc, is pretty exciting too... the little fuzzy-blocky Flash video on YouTube just doesn't do it justice. Too bad there's no easy way for me to get the DVD-quality videos distributed cheaply on iTunes or something, since it would be easier distribution than me trying to package them up and mail them to the 4 people who are interested :-)

Las flautas y el charango pasan :) &mdash 01/22/08 - 04:16:51 PM
Charming little piece, and I like the video version as well :)
I like the use of the Ben Boldt 24-pack pan flute -- gotta try that on somewhere myself. And while I agree that some strumming would sound more folkloric, there's something uniquely "other" in the charango sound as is ... almost a baroque vibe or something! If you add percussion (which could be cool), I'd almost take it that way, with Andino percussion instruments maybe (rattles, jangly bell thingies) but kind of minimalist in an almost early music way ...
And, yes, it could be longer :)
Oh well, some random thoughts! :) [ Reply to This ]
needs more... &mdash 01/22/08 - 04:41:13 PM
Hi Carl, thank you for stopping in and offering suggestions and thoughts! I wanted the strummed Charango to sound authentic, so I worked hard at tweaking the strumming. I added some cheesy strings just to soften it a bit for video-background music, but I do want to head in the direction of a more realistic Andean folk sound. And I avoided percussion only because I'm really really bad at writing percussion backing... but I know it needs it. I will be revisiting this, making it longer, and adding some authentic Peruvian sounding rhythmic stuff as you suggest. Glad you liked the video... that was an amazing experience! Stay tuned for an update to this.

Lovely piece and well crafted - as usual. You definitely capture the feeling of the Andes, and it is a nice soft feel to it, unhurried and plainly presented in the play between the flutes and the guitar. If you were to extend it I get the feel that the guitar might want to take the lead in a variation of the theme.
Great work, and lucky you to get so close to these magnificent creatures!

I always thought you had an abundance of talent to the point of overflowing.
A collab some time when you're done wrecking your walls would be fun tho'.....

Love the vibe. The orchestration is perfect. Would have liked to enjoy more of it ... Bravo! [ Reply to This ]

Thank you for listening and enjoying my attempt at inventing a brand new "old Peruvian folk tune". This was the first sketch, there's a newer longer version #2 on my page too, where I did a better job with the orchestration and tweaking of dynamics.

You ordered it? Aw, thank you, I hope you get lots of enjoyment and ideas out of it! There are all sorts of little things all over the Dragon's den to look for in the "Behind the scenes" tour. I think you'll like the "Technoids" on the big screen and enhanced audio. Do let me know what you think when you get it!
I'm happy you joined here and are having fun listening to and creating music and friends... woohooo!
