Description:
This is a song of hope. Written over 10 years ago, 5 different version have been recorded, all of which have been demo versions until now (hopefully).

Lyrics:
HOW I'D LOVE TO

another sun comes up
another day begins
my heart is heavy
my soul is sore within
what does it matter?
gotta get up and do it all again
how I'd love to

two live one life of love
an image seen by some
to see an image love imagination
love the unlovely
and see love in everyone
how I'd love to
You know I'd love to

Like a dream I view reality and realize the lies
I thought I'd never see
baby I can't wait
too soon would be too late
although I pay the fare
I never get there - I never seem to get there

How I'd Love To
Let the anger die - laugh more than I cry
How I'd Love To
Know the answers why before the questions arise
How I'd Love To
Look into your eyes never have to say good-bye
How I'd Love To
How I'd Love To

I used to love the days I thought my world would never end
violence was just a game we played and freedom was a friend
and close by always a hand onto depend
oh how I...how I would Love To

like a dream i view reality and realize the lies
I thought I'd never ever see
baby I can't wait
Is this love or is it hate?
although I pay the fair I never get there
I never seem to get there

now my freedom has turned to fantasy
inward toil tears out and soils my fantastic sick sobriety
but can I stop to think about anyone but me
how I'd....I'd Love To
you know I'd love to

I paid the fare
This time - this time I'm gonna get there

How I Love To
Let the anger die - laugh more than I cry
How I Love To
never question why - just crank the tunes enjoy the ride
How I Love To
Look into your eyes realize all that's divine
How I Love To
How I Love To

Consistently great &mdash 01/06/08 - 04:10:11 PM
Heavier than usual guitars combined with the acoustic interludes really work well... especially when it's just a tease to bring us to your patented killer hooks embedded in the chorus.

(Glad to see another G&L axe here- just wish I could make my Legacy sound half as good!)

great Imagination &mdash 01/06/08 - 04:10:15 PM
Lovely vocal harmonies. Vox remind me of Steve Vai/Zappa in places. Mega-thick guitar tone is awesome. In fact I'd go as far as to say you have the best 'tone' on MacJams.

Be cool,
Pie

That Pie should reference Zappa- I was thinking the same thing.

Lots &mdash 01/06/08 - 04:25:58 PM
of surprises in this song-and I love surprises! If you could mix XTC,Tom Morello,Tod Rundgren,King's X,and Steve Howe together it might sound something like this.Amazing guitar sounds and playing, great vocals, fantastic production, highly creative...extremely cool.

Fab production. Your performance is brilliant on every level. The vocals are perfectly sounding and I dig the creative timings. Your guitar work is very cool. The heavy hook line riffs are catchy, and you have made the song interesting throughout with how you vary the content all the way. From the heavy stuff to the sparsely arranged acoustic parts, and then it explodes into the chorus that has sing along qualities. Never a dull moment:)

Hit potential here my friend!

Great stuff... &mdash 01/06/08 - 04:47:55 PM
...sounds so strong...then into the smooth chorus...I just really love the switches back and forth. Production's really tight...

Fantastic &mdash 01/06/08 - 06:07:45 PM
chorus. The vocals sound pro. The whole tone is so thick. Love the
sound of the Reverend. I'll be singing " How I Love to" for a while for sure.
Great work all around thanks for sharing.

Frank.

wild &mdash 01/06/08 - 06:55:36 PM
the juxposition of the different sounding parts that ultimately lead into the crushing chorus. this is what I live for. driving heavy riffs punctuated by xtc like breaks and huge refrains. Brilliant

throw in the kitchen sink. LOL

WOW!!! Great-sounding tune on ALL levels.

So many interesting facets to this arrangement and production. Exceptionally well-done, Ray. This is one of the sweetest productions I've heard in quite awhile... and truly worthy of a perfect *10*. ;)

Outstanding song &mdash 01/07/08 - 06:21:24 AM
and awesome production. The song is melodic, rocking, and beautifully arranged. You get great sounds from the guitars, and your vocals are sweet (especially love the harmonies). Lyrics are great, also - filled with great images ("fantastic sick sobriety" - great line) This is a real treat - what a way to start the week! A pro piece of work. Kudos. Nice work. Peace.

This sounds professional... &mdash 01/07/08 - 07:08:52 AM
on many levels. I really like the layers that you have woven throughout this song. Your songwriting is very solid (inward toil tears out and soils my fantastic sick sobriety is my personal favorite!), and it has a certain '70's feel to it. At times, I hear a little Jethro Tull, which was a favorite of mine growing up. This song is never "lazy", if you know what I mean -- each part has a purpose and you have something to say that comes across start to finish. Really enjoyed it!

Peace,
Paul

I am &mdash 01/07/08 - 07:25:31 AM
really pleased that I already have one of your previous versions on ipod. I have heard the song many times and love it.
This version is even better sounding, your production skills are first rate and very professional sounding.
Where can I buy this?
Cheers

Awesome &mdash 01/07/08 - 07:42:35 AM
I like the bass you use for this better (it's less distorted) but, I still like your other version of this song more.

Hey, I remember this! &mdash 01/07/08 - 09:29:32 PM
This has been sitting in my iPod forever!... And since I don't think you completely filled in the blanks on whatever version I first downloaded, I don't even know if was sure who did it...

It has been one of those songs that pops up from time to time on shuffle and always has me listening intently and immediately...

It's a really strong song, in both versions. Great vocals, and neat guitar tone(s)...

I think the first one I heard is kind of anchored in my head as THE ONE, but this one sure does have its particular delights...

Either way, SOME version of this song should be a bona fide FM hit, and soon, please...

Ed

love it again &mdash 01/08/08 - 01:44:13 PM
Hi eleveneyes,

I'm hardly on macjams anymore (unfortunately) but happened to pop in today and what a lovely surprise to hear another version of "How I'd Love To". What a strong, satisfying chorus and delicious production and lots of variety in pacing and feel throughout the song. Maybe lyrics are a bit obscure, but not a big deal. Is this not on an album already or getting airplay?? If not it should be!! Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

iav &mdash 01/12/08 - 05:13:51 PM
The whole 2nd verse is a modal shift of the first verse - a classic Vai compositional move. I didn't realize how Vai-esque that part was until sometime during the mixing phase, but then it hit me one day -I realized that I just pulled a Vai move. That's ok, Good artist borrow, great artists steal. That's what someone told me once anyway.

What a great job you have done here. Loved all the singing and those high harmonies, so cool. Add the great beat and guitars, man o man. You have a super voice. Awesome throughout! Thanks for sharing this one. How I'd love to listen to this again....Ok I will!

One of your best songs. I actually like your 2.0 version better which is edgier and has better flow. I dig the new backing vocal stuff, but not sure of the acoustic style is as energetic, as fun and driving and rock as the 2.0 version. It's cool how different the styles are. Maybe include differing versions in an EP or as bonus tracks? A shame to not share some of these versions with a wider audience.

[ Reply to This ]
yeah.... &mdash 01/12/08 - 05:00:10 PM
there are some things about 2.0 I like too. Everything is more immediate. This latest version is much more deliberate. I miss some of that 'excitement'. I think it's mostly in the new vocal delivery. It lacks something to me. Technically it's much better and I think a step in a better direction. My wife, who is not a trained musician, was listening to version 1.5 and when it hit the 2nd verse she's like "ohh, I hate this part....sounds like you don't know what you're supposed to be singing" and ultimately she was right. I didn't know and she heard it. Version 2.0 has that same vocal performance on it but not after Dr. Ray went in and did extensive digital surgery on that vocal track. enough rambling...
many thanks for your time and especially your thoughts Tobin.

What a post &mdash 01/10/08 - 09:04:54 PM
At first I heard Tull in the intro, but as things moved forward, Pie was there in the chorus. Also heard Jon Anderson, but then I hear him a lot ;)

Some beautiful changes and excellent variation - production first class!

Great vocals and lyrics arrangement is top notch. I personally like the contrast and not doing the obvious. I like that the song goes different places and all are a treat.

funny you mention the tic tocking guitars - that's exactly what I had in mind.
Here's a screen shot from the ProTools session I recorded this song in. Notice what I named the two guitar tracks.
Thanks for listening Bill. I've always loved your guitar picking but after recently experiencing laying down tile myself, I now have a whole new respect for you and what you do!

here via you Myspace page where this was playing and I just had to leave a comment to say how great this is. I love the juxtaposed heavy riffs against your inbetween vocals which are excellent. Great harmonies which to me as well as the song style in parts sounded very 'Queen-ish', love it
