Description:
So, I bought Logic Pro 8 and within 30 mins had made a little tune, kinda loungy, no vocals, but kinda moody. I e-mailed it to Philip just to show him what I'd done, and he sent me it back with guitar and the 'Deep' vocal line (which he sings on this). So I wrote some other vocals, and we backed and forthed this, Philip mixed it (hey, I know my limitations) and here we are.
I really like how this collab developed, and the fact that we both sing lead.
Philip wanted to do this as an 'exquisite corpse', i.e. someone does a bit of the track then sends it on to the next person, but I bottled it ... however, this idea may come to fruition in future.
BTW, 'Deep' is Philips title, as mine wasn't deemed suitable ...
P.S. The lyrics I wrote were greatly inspired by Estellie's 'Metamorphosis'. so thanks Ella.

Lyrics:
Deep (music and lyrics by PVD and SC)Deep, down deep
I want to believe
Believe in a reason to leave.
Deep, down deep
I've said it all
I'm tired of fighting a broken doll.
People burn like cigarettes
Their scattered ash tastes of regret
They withdraw the sunset.
I forget sometimes.
Father, son and Holy Ghost
Tell me which you love the most
They come to me with Frankensence now.
These days, soaring days
Soaring deep, so deep, so deep.
Did I reach you, did I run true
Now the evidence is weighed?
Did I break love, did I fake love
Now my hand is played?
Screen-lit geeks they will collide
Find love amongst the gigabytes
When you've got no-one, digitalise.
And I've tried to spy this tiny world
But the safety glass is smeared with dirt;
It's hard to love a face like mine.
And these people burn like cigarettes
Their scattered ash tastes of regret
They withdraw the sunset.
I forget sometimes.
These days, soaring days
Soaring deep, so deep, so deep.
Deep, down deep
I want to believe
Believe in a reason to leave.
Deep, down deep
I've said it all
I'm tired of fighting a broken doll.
The century is with me now

Good song. Catchy melody that floats easy into my head. Your vocals remind me pretty much of Bowie. The song is also one that could have fitted well in his collection of goodies:)
I think the acoustic guitar-lines adds breathing air. Everything sounds good!
You both did a great job on this:)
echoroom
Bowies probably my bit - not sure who Philip sounds like???
Thanks man
steve

Nicely understated.
Excellent vocals, intelligent lyrics and very well produced.
Cheers

Read Norman Mailer..... or get a new tailor.
thanks Dick - this is kinda... smooth and adult. Helllooo llladies!

You have to know how that worbley keyboard delights my senses. The guitar that plucks alongside it has a kinda spanish, kinda jazzy feel to it. Somewhere in between. Great mixture of instruments/voices throughout the entire song. The chirpy piano parts, the smooth Johnny Smith guitar sounds, clever lyrics and your vocals paired up like this make another great song for the Best Of album.
Impressive stuff guys.
echoroom
Heck, just noticed I left the rating on by mistake... ignore.
Yeah, I love the guitar on this. It's an odd kinda song, nit sure what genre or what it sounds like ... a d(r)epressed Michael Bolton????
Wrap your extra arms around it!
steve
racerat
Yup,
You nailed it:
That's what I sound like: Depressed Michael Bolton....
dajama
This is a terrific song. Instrumentation is excellent - love the guitar fills and the keyboard chords, in particular. The whole song sounds great - fills the phones with warmth. The lyrics are smart and very nicely done (love the line "Screen-lit geeks they will collide") and the effect is a little melancholy, but truly thought-provoking and memorable. Great performances all round - I love that the vocals range from restrained to emotive. Very cool. Nice work, guys. Peace.
echoroom
Running to catch up with ya these days! Thanks man - dunno how Phil mixed this, as it woulda been way beyond me!
aclarke
You guys really sound good together. Very lush production. The lyrics are amazing..."People burn like cigarettes Their scattered ash tastes of regret" and "I'm tired of fighting a broken doll" very imaginative.
Love the delivery of the song- I always appreciate a strong vocal effort. Very solid all the way through!
echoroom
we always make the effort!

collabs, never seem to have any seams. The two of you have created something incredible. As if you were there physically together during creation, incubation and final mix. Its great how both of your parts are perfectly threaded and woven together. Bravo.
echoroom
Actually, i think my wife does think we're having an affair. Can you have virtual atristic differences?
I think we should slit up and reform in 2010.
Thanks man - love what you did with Metamorphosis.
The Infinites
and I expect no less!
Really lush. Do you remember a band called the Adventures? Thought of them, but then went back to "nah, that's Echo!" I'm so used to your vox that it now doesn't sound like anyone else.
Guitar is great, summer sounds in winter - nice!
Another triumph. Collabtastic guys!
Jim
echoroom
Nearly as good as poptastic, mate!
I like sounding like me.
Shame i look like me, too.
thanks Jim!
Ed Hannifin
I love the acoustic guitar bits, and the minimalist synth pad stuff, and the bass is understated but really right... I think the bass is actually really essential to how the song comes across...
The song is well written in terms of melody and in terms of lyrics, and then nicely recorded... A touch of that 'Ashes to Ashes' feel in there...
And the vocals are terrific...
Ed
echoroom
...the Ashes will be my fault!
Actually, i remember a comment you made on Overload, a song Phil wrote that i sung on, saying what a good voice he has... it's always stuck with me, whicj is why i'm so glad we share on this.
Thanks Ed
Perfect, you guys are too good love this I think I could here this on the radio. SO glad to have this on MJ's its a real treat THanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peter Murphy is who (Steve's part especially) this puts me in mind of.
This is pretty smooth..........
echoroom
Ohh, but I havent got his eyebrows. Or cheekbones.
Thanks for your comments on this, they really helped pull this baby together.

nice vocals and well structured all the way around.

such a cool sounding production. I am partial to lounges, though this has kind of a cinematic flavor to me. Awesome lyrics as usual. You guys do top notch stuff together.
echoroom
Odd song, I think. Wide screen lounge?
I really stuggled with the genre... to me its a moody pop song. I really like the lyrics on this I ms admit..kinda internal and evocative.
thanks BH
steve
estellie
...is that anything I did could help with the making of this!
I think the rhythms in this are key. The bass and guitar are very rhythmic, and all the rhythms pull and tug each other for this great feel of tension and also swaying. I'm with Bob--that "worbley" keyboard and "chirpy" keyboard are great!
You and Philip are too full of talent.
echoroom
... I'm full of something.
It;s the crushed piano sound - I love it! Its a struggle not to use it on everything.
The people/ guitar strings line in 'Meta' started me off on this lyric, so i owe you .... you have officially inspired me!
lol
steve
Moviz
recording this. Seems like you two are a match made............ at MacJam. It sounds really classy throughout;the backing is terrific, but the vocals are really lush and sound great together; compliment each other even. It sounds like a real quality song to me, cheers to both of you, M
echoroom
Thanks maurice - I think our voices work really well together - tho' Phils harmonies are better than mine! Hopefully we'll 'duet' more in future.

excellent double lead vox and a groovy vibe to the tune!
simply awesome!

Thanks Jason - really appreciate it - I'm a big admirer of Monty California, so that's a great compliment. Though I think we need to post something balls out rocky soon - i keep leadin' Phil down this serious , moody roads!

Great work singing and all steve you singing just
so cool here ..the deep voice of Philip made groovey
atmosphere the sound bed itself very creative .always
its the best thing to hear here a cool MJ colab KUDOS!
Love how song structure evolves sort of starting with bridge/chorus
Great harmonies throughout, and yet another fantastic song. I like your keyboard work its flows nicely.
Steve you went from LE7 to LP8 correct? what do you feel are the benefits so far w/ your limited exposure to LP8?
Look forward to more LP8*ER
_T
echoroom
Just listened to your new track - really great, no kidding.
LP8 i think is just easier to use, and arguably the sound quality is better. The screen structure is easier to navigate - i find it a lot more plug n play than LP7. Also ask Phil, as he's mixed all our stuff recently.
s
racerat
I was hesitant to make the switch, but then someone I collab with (hint, hint) forced me into it....It took me all of about 5 seconds to fall in love with the single window interface. It is SO much more intuitive and easy to navigate the windows and menus, etc you use all the time. The new vocal comping feature is worth the upgrade alone. I vote heavily in favor. Those languishing in L7 darkness, come into the L8 light....
michael2
this is really great. every twist and turn is full of great sounds and really engaging melodies. i love that chorus. this would be good in a David Lynch movie. this sounds so good. i'd like to upgrade to Logic at some point, but i think i'll probably have to get a different computer first. i hear so many horror stories about the learning curve, it's encouraging that you just dove right in.
echoroom
Hey, what a compliment - thanks Michael.
When you load a project, you get preloaded sounds and i used quite a lot of them - this started as a play around and just expanded... like a virus, it just mutated and multiplied!
steve
J.A.Stewart
Perhaps if you happen to be playing The Mos Eisley Cantina. LOL
I, like Ed (ejh), hear a strong *Ashes to Ashes* connection in this song, probably because of the liquid keyboard part.
That aside, it's a very well-done atmospheric piece, nicely performed and produced... very polished. A splendid collaboration on all counts. ;)
--- Joe
echoroom
I had that cantina song single as a kid - loved it.
Maybe we should cover it.
Ashes to ashes is my favourite song ever, adn i think the keyboard sound may have been inspired by it - liquid is a good description.
Major Steve
Vic Holman
now I have to figure which one of you is deeper.
First the lyrics are deep and dark.
The mood is deeper yet.
vocals digging deeper to the heart.
keyboards and the acoustic work add a light into this tunnel as you two dig even deeper.
well I fell into this deep hole and dug it. just don't kick the dirt in from above.
Kudos gentlemen!
echoroom
Philips much deeper than me .... I'm a 2m pool with a 6m sign on it.
Not sure who's taller, tough.

What a great job you guys did. I can hear the Bowie influence for sure.
Nice mix too. Everything sounds so cool. Had to listen to it again.
Frank.

relaxed feel to this beautifully crafted song. You two are just getting better and better. Another song that sounds perfect to me in every way and I know will become a favourite of mine. It has that 'grow on you' feel to it. Fantastic.

Loungy suits the two of you. I had noticed the new song yesterday and was mightily ticked off this morning on my walk when I reached for my iPod and realized that I'd forgotten to download it before I left. It's a good thing I hadn't heard it or I would have been more ticked off.
It's a really great song. One of my favorites you two have done. I like the energy here; it's different, more laid-back, less of the typical echo-strut, but with the typical depth and lyrics one could pick apart with an archeologist's toolkit for years and still find new meanings.
BTW, Michael Bolton, my ass. Also, the guitars are gorgeous.
echoroom
yeah, my struts in a rut! Grrreat to hear from you lisa! This is pretty laid back and smoochy, with very impenitrible lyrics.
thanks for checking us out (as it were)... hope to hear something from you soon!

Excellent collab, guys. Every thing about this is super good music, especially the instruments, the writing and singing. And the other stuff.

Really enjoyed this song. Great trance melody with cool beat, great lyrics, and vocals are super. You guys take a bow. Awesome collab! Thanks for sharing it with us!!
Tiny_Man_Inside
Steve and Phillip,
You guys have such a great vibe working between you. Fast and efficient in term of generating the music, but not at the expense of quality. Brilliant production and well crafted songs.
Steve- most of the time when I listen to your stuff, Bowie immediately comes to mind. There are a lot of similarities in your phrasings and tonal characteristics... I love the sounds you produce vocally and even though you do have that Bowie-influence, I feel like you're doing it on your own terms and it's not like you're trying to copy him or anything like that. I love your vocal feel, just wonderful timing and expressionism.
That said, I wonder if it is ever frustrating for you that so many people point out the Bowie connection? I know that it is hard to shake that kind analogy... Huy (vocalist for Tiny Man Inside) and I both sometimes gets frustrated that people only hear the Rage Against the Machine influence in our stuff, when I think we're drawing from so many more styles than just that one band. Anyway, I was wondering if I could have some of your thoughts on this kind of "listener analogy assessment". After all, people always like to relate what they hear now to something they've heard in the past. Just wondering what your thought are on this?
Mason
echoroom
wow mason - that is such a good question.
Does it bug me -sometimes. I remember saying to Lisa that i was getting tired of the Bowie comparisons, then we did the track 'converging' and i thought:
'Sheeit, this reminds ME of Bowie'.
So i shut up.
My biggest influence used to be Ian McCulloch of the Bunnymen, but I realised that HE was greatly influenced by Bowie, so initially it was a second-hand influence. But I've really got into Bowie in the last 5-6 years - I listen to him a lot (scary Monsters is my favourite Bowie album) and love his lyrics.
But singing-wise, I also really admire Mike Stipe, Thom Yorke, Rufus Wainwright and Nick cave amongst others, so they're all in there.
But when I sing, I'm singing MY lyrics and trying to deliver them as me, as best I can .... so i don't imagine I'm singing them as anyone else. I know what tones of my voice i like and try to deliver something I can listen back to and like (my acid test).
Ultimately i understand that everyone, including me, uses comparisons as short-hand; i do it myself in comments. In all honesty, although the Bowie comments may get a bit tiresome, I take them as a compliment (as I really admire him), rather than assuming I'm being insulted (i.e. that people think I'm completely ripping-off Bowie). I'm also at the stage where I can joke about it, as I'm so used to it (I guarantee every song posting has at least one Bowie comparison)
Comparison is a good critical shorthand, so it's here to stay... i can think of worse things to be compared to.
Thanks for this - it's a really interesting and valid question.
One final comment - none of this is a complaint. With the amount of great talent here, i'm kinda surprised at how good a response the stuff I/we post gets, and ultimately, I think I'm very fortunate.
Thin White steve
Tiny_Man_Inside
I love what you said here and agree with you 100%:
But when I sing, I'm singing MY lyrics and trying to deliver them as me, as best I can .... so i don't imagine I'm singing them as anyone else. I know what tones of my voice i like and try to deliver something I can listen back to and like (my acid test).
I'm hearing the influence, but I can tell that you are doing it on your own terms.
Keep up the great work.
Mason
i think it is flattering to be compared to good singers. it is the bad singers that get under my skin. because of my musical preferences, it is either jon bonjovi or, and i do not know why, axl rose. i can hear the JbJ, and that is ok, but i never considered mr rose a vocalist. if i were compared to bowie, it would be a good thing... now you know who to sell your songs to...
and, TMI? my only suggestion to get the zack comments to vanish? blow them all away by doing one with no rap... unfortunately, with the hip-hop/rock thing, there are so few to compare, that it is all people can throw out. people, in general use memory in different ways. but one way that is universal, is they take in a new sound, taste, touch, or feeling by way of comparison. all of your major sensory memories have been used at some point, and as a result, any future sensations are in the form of comparison. it is not an insult. quite the opposite. by way of comparison, they are telling you that your music has brought back to them a sensory memory that has been stored in thier brain, and to me, that is a good thing...
guitapick
"People burn like cigarettes
Their scattered ash tastes of regret"
Great, great phrase...
You're doing very well with Logic Pro...and your tunes/performance are as good as ever.
is really bowie-esque. also, i hear the kind of music tarantino puts into his movies. you two really have something here. i would beat down quintin's door with this one. he and robert rodrigues could use this style for sure.
echoroom
... to mine and Masons comments, Allen. And the tarantino thing - never thought of it, but I totally get that - the tempo, mood and guitar is their kinda thing.
Anyone have his address???
steve
(Tho' i liked Planet Terror better than Death Proof!)
jiguma
Maybe a little overpowered by the synth at the start. Fantastic production, with a lush, deep sound. How'd you get Bowie in on the chorus? ;)
Top post!

Phil did an excellent job on mixing this .... it wasn't easy, especially the bridge.
I channeled Dave by wearing a Peirrot clowns costume to record the vocals for this.
And wearing odd coloured contact lens!

There have been a lot of good songs at macjams that are listed everyday, but there are only a few that really standout for its refreshing quality. There are a lot of elements I really love about this song which make it a real standout. I love the haunting vocals from both of you and the understated drama of the music. You guys continue to amaze the macjams audience with the novelty of each song you produce.
echoroom
Hey Leon - nice to hear from you. That's a good one - my work tends to be overly dramatic, and this is understated, which is a bit unusual!
Look forward to a posting from you when it all clams down...

so sorry to hold off on comments....been listening and working last few days....but to business gents first off the voices here are incredible,
key work and synth worked in absolutely great, guitar work tasty so i could have just read every one elses's comments and faked it...lol
just the best guys.. a very envious 2 hats off.... and kinda like the vocal quality a bit better than bowie..hehe
echoroom
Thanks for the kind words. How do you think Phil sounds like.
Damn, maybe it's him that's bringing this whole Bowie thing down on me!!
or not!

the production is perfect.. very present yet still atmospheric... I'm loving how all the parts in this tapestry interweave... there is an economy of playing in the different elements, to create the whole... the soundbed... this is very smart stuff... understated & powerful
I don't even want to know what it's about... I'm happy let it remain shrouded in mystery
echoroom
Top shelf means porn in the UK ... so thanks!
A lot of stuff was stuck into the track then Phil smartly pulled stuff in and out.
The lyric is a mystery to ma... and i kinda like it that way!

... yes, it is. Unexpected, isn't it!?
And completely down to me.
BTW, i was just thinking of you - just downloaded British sea Powers new album - very Bunnymen!

they're the bunnymen to Arcade fire's U2. But they could do with a singer like you.

echoroom
Where ya been. The album, 'Down home with Phil n Steve', will be ready to dl for Xmas 2010 - all your country favourites are on it!
Great to hear from ya

sorry I asked. :-) What made me giggle was your British spelling of "Country 'Favourites'". Hey, if it's got the two of you, i can probably learn to appreciate country. Here in my part of the country, thems calls it KUNTRY. Haha!
job really good song
echoroom
Any time!

I agree...you've got a great Bowie or even Depeche Mode/Pet Shop Boys kind of sound.
I'd be greatly honored to have you sing, when time opens up for you, to one of my tunes.
Thanks for sharing this one!

....of course!
But, this is actually pretty different for you - which is good.
Love the line about the cigarettes -very peotic that!
Must take up on the comments Mason made. You must be sick of the Bowie comparison - cos I am! Glad you mentioned the Ian Mac influence - that's obviously there - but the voice that comes to mind for me in this song is Matt Johnson (The The) - which is probably beause the arrangement is a little mellower.
Like you say comparisons are great, and they are easy references to make a point, but I think Mason has it totally right when he says that essentially you are just you - a good singer with a load of influences which have all added to your styling over many years.
This is good, and you and Philip are forming a winning partnership. Just keep it coming. The more the better and maybe we can get through a comment session without you know who being mentioned once :-)))
Phil
echoroom
Nice to hear from ya - hope you're doing ok! Thanks for the comments - this was kinda different.
I'm doing a track with Alex weiler which is a real 80's thing - even I think I sound like Dave on that one... maybe i wont post it!
Cheers bud... look forward to some new work from you soon.

so professional sounding!!
again I listen and NEED more!!!
you just gained another fan
so WHO mixed you? I need to learn how to get that PROFESSIONAL sound that I continue to hear as I listen, the vocals are BANG on!!
echoroom
This was recorded in logic 8, and all mixed by Philip (racerat), and it took a looong time. Actually, i'm gonna redo a couple of my vocals spots on this cause they sound flat to me. I've improved my mixing by working with Phil and just reading a lot of books and magazines and getting help from people at MJs - it takes time but there are some very clever, generous people here.

it sounds really relaxing and thought provoking. atmospheric good vocals and lyrics. well done.

Sorry I('m sooo late getting to this. I wont even begin to suggest links and comparisons as they've all been made already.
What this song does most I think, is remind us all how really damn excellent you both are at putting a song together, because that's what this is a very fine example of, a really well crafted song. This out does most of the contrived crap produced by very major names recently and I'd include Mr Bowie here. Keep up the brilliant work Steve, I really envy this level of easy perfection. Your voices work really well together.
echoroom
this was a pretty simple thing, but Phil knocked it into shape. Nice to hear from ya - long time no post - hope all is well

I agree, very professional sounding! Great song front to back, love the instrumentation and vocals. Also makes me consider rewriting all of my lyrics for the better.
echoroom
,,,, but i think your lyrics are fine... and it took 2 people to write these!
Remark80
I think this tune keeps you on your toes. I like the changes in vocal styles between the different verses. Though I really like the combination of the high and low vox, your voice is very cool without the high backing. Bowie yes, but I think you throw your own style in that makes it pretty unique. Great work.
I really like your sound on your music.... This also sounds great... and your vocals are in top.... The mixing is great... And a great feeling in this one... Thanks for sharing...
Great vocals, great guitar work. What else ? Oh .. Great song. Enjoyed it from the start to the end. Great work both. Bravo!

This is so cool! It's got a bit of an 80's vibe, which is right where I live. I don't make much music like this, but I LOVE to listen to it! Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

I agree with thoddi, Bowie to a tee.
Great guitars, Great production.

You and Philip are certainly one of the most exciting collab team around, at least for my personal taste. Two great voices, and great musicians as well. Haven't been around for a while, so get a lot to catch up, and that's what I'm doing ! Seems you're a bit away from here too, I hope you'll find these words when you'll be back.
Cheers !
