Keywords:
I need a vacation and this is the best I can do at the moment (1)
Description:
It's been storming here: everything is soaked, the mountains are covered in snow and the sunsets are beautiful. This is both a mental vacation and a tribute to Martin Denny. I had a hard time mixing this one; any ideas? are the vibes too loud, too much reverb on the overall mix (i used the matrix reverb on the master track at about 23%). thanks for listening.

Hardware:
intel mini mac, m-audio 49e

Software:
GB4, world music jampack, ben boldt vibraphone (from the 24 instrument pack), i also used a sample of bird sounds by digifishmusic at the freesound project

A great piece, Michael..... &mdash 01/08/08 - 01:52:18 PM
This is just fine the way you have uploaded it, in my opinion.

The tune side reminds me of a scene of people in a retirement home. (Don't know about the howling noise though, in this context).

I'd never heard of Martin Denny so I've learned about someone else, here on MJ's. I love information sharing!!

Take care.

Paul

thanks Paul &mdash 01/08/08 - 05:09:35 PM
i can totally see the retirement scene. maybe i can take out the bird sounds and sell it to a pharmaceutical company for their next misleading commercial: "Benzinex, brings aging to a halt. Side effects may include shortness of breath, sudden death and irregularity in some individuals.:

thanks for listening. martin denny is actually kind of cheesy 60's loung music that has been absorbed by tiki culture. he's got a Hawaiian theme going, so you always hear birds and rain in his stuff. i love his sound though.

I hear you. I need a mental break too! I've been getting to know your work more, and I'm a fan!

Hard to tell--if it's for a soundtrack-type deal, it feels like a Mothersbaugh/Wes Anderson feel, and the mix sounds good. If you were going for a more ambient sound, I'd suggest bringing the nature sounds up more in the mix. This is all my opinion, and I'm no expert.

thanks for listening. i'll take Mothersbaugh any day, i love his stuff. i end up doing a lot of instrumental stuff as recording vox is probably more than my poor family can take. next time i have a good pop melody though, i want to get you to sing some vox with me. thanks for coming by.

Right on &mdash 01/08/08 - 01:58:19 PM
Wes Anderson- that;s spot on Mix sounds fine to me - the vibes are a touch loud in plces, but reverb works.

this is a great chill out track

glad you stopped by. i may have to have another go at this one, thought the vibes were a bit loud and now that others agree, they're driving me crazy.

restful is exactly what I was going for. our house flooded last time it stormed, so whenever the rain is done and the house is still standing, we breath a big sigh of relief. thanks so much for coming by.

wonderful ambience to this. I think the vibe may sit a little on top but otherwise flawless. Creative with the threaded nature noise. Really sweet

vibe is too loud, agreed. i'm really glad that you like the piece itself. i may try re-mixing when i get a chance. only problem is, if i am going to invest the time on something, i get antsy; meaning a re-mix would probably end up as something completely different. thanks a bunch for stopping by and commenting.

Yes this is so Martin Denny without the tropical, instead this is like a North American woodsy Martin Denny
Great work Here, very imaginative!

i love the idea of a Pacific Northwest version of Martin Denny; sitting around banging on elk skulls and a marimba he made from old growth redwood trees. thanks for checking this out.

Inspiring &mdash 01/08/08 - 07:09:50 PM
This song makes me want to go spend some time outside... Really, it does. I'm inspired to walk out my door after a rain storm and take a nice walk. This song will be playing in my head. Thanks for the good feeling.

this is different. You never cease to amaze me. I have no idea who Martin Denney is. But no big deal. Nice, melody and very loungy. Evokes a mental image of you appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show with your vibraphone, with velvet wrapped around it.

thanks Vic &mdash 01/08/08 - 10:33:27 PM
you gotta check out Martin Denny. some of it as hokey as can be, and some of it is truly amazing. he does an amazing version of the Hawaiian Wedding Song. Thanks a bunch for listening, glad you liked it. Now I got to go wrap my mac in velvet.

This sounds like a nice vacation, all right...
For a moment, I thought I was in a more laid-back version of the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland :D
(and that's a great vacation)

I love the groove, and the sounds that you've incorporated here!
Thank you for posting and sharing.

exactly the sort of vibe i was going for. i originally had brushed snares playing and then took them out at the last minute. all of the other instruments seemed like no brainers. thanks so much for listening mysti.

What a peaceful mood and ambience. I can almost smell the clear air that's present after a storm. For me the sounds of the birds where correctly placed in the mix. You've created a feeling of perspective and distance to every object in place. Well done:)

thanks Thoddi &mdash 01/09/08 - 12:16:02 PM
glad you enjoyed. the bird sounds were probably the hardest to blend in. although they were recorded very well, there are some birds that are just way louder than others. thanks so much for listening and for your kind words.

Sets a nice mood. I like the vibes the way they are. Reminds me more of a 13th song on an album. Like a good-bye.
Charming.

You know I went right to Martin Denny &mdash 01/09/08 - 04:42:48 PM
before I read the description. I think his music was written to be played in fall-out shelters while the kids play checkers and you open another can of spam. Think you did a great job here - the balance sounds good to me.

i'm surprised &mdash 01/09/08 - 06:49:55 PM
that more folks don't know Martin Denny. Your description of him is awesome; i could see the same folks who decided that pink was a soothing color come up with the idea of playing him to the "poor unfortunates to lighten their mood." chemical free anti-depressant. thanks for listening.

i remember liking the High Llamas, sort of Brian Wilson-ish. I remember reading that they couldn't tour in support of their records as the band was so big it would have cost a fortune. thanks for stopping by.

Very nice &mdash 01/11/08 - 06:48:58 AM
It's just shy of 7 am on a Friday here, and shortly I'll be heading out into the snowy world for another day, and frankly, I'm just not in the mood! However, this helps. Hee hee! Thanks, dude. I like this a lot. I'll second (or third or fourth) the apparent consensus that the vibes are a little forward, but it's a tiny nit to pick. I'm with lavalamp - hidden track that pops up 2 minutes after the "last" song ends. Very cool. Peace.

I expect some heavy rock &mdash 01/12/08 - 01:00:55 PM
and what do I get a side I never heard from you. I enjoy this, there was a great organist years ago. I think his name was Earl Grant, but he would make sounds like this and put in nature and animal sound etc. This tune brings me back! You did it.

Thanks for transporting me in time back to some of those very precious tunes!

Way to go and you put a smile on my face in the process!

Ben Boldt &mdash 01/13/08 - 07:06:58 PM
This is very, very nice; I think it's very satisfying to put together a song like this, and orchestrate it so well. Makes it seem unfair and shortsighted to smirk at a guy like Martin Denny........ Well, really good job.

As for the vibes: that Ben Boldt one rings out well, but the attack is pretty hot and you don't get much leeway in softening it. I don't know what's in your arsenal, but I've gotten a good result with the Apple factory vibes sound (which you can tweak the volume on) plus a celesta to fill out the bell sound. Just a thought.
Best,

incidental music &mdash 01/14/08 - 02:21:54 PM
Very pleasant choice and mix of sounds. The balance between the instruments sounds fine to me, and so does the reverb.

It reminded me of PeeWee's Playhouse, with the vibes and bird sound-effects, and mood.

The chord progressions are predictable but create a certain feeling of order, sanity and peace after the intensity of a storm. Very effective.

I would have liked to hear a more distinctive melody in this piece; it sounded a little like music minus-one.
The vibes came closest to a melody -- perhaps imitate it in other instruments to give it more of a punch.

Nice work overall.

thanks &mdash 01/14/08 - 03:22:14 PM
for listening. I agree that I could probably have fleshed out the melody a bit more, but then decided against it. I realy do appreciate your honesty, and your listening to the song. thanks.

Has Maxis contacted you yet? &mdash 01/15/08 - 12:28:44 PM
The first thing I thought of when hearing this was "The Sims" - and I do mean that as a compliment. This has such a laid-back and relaxed feeling, much like the soundtrack to "The Sims" (I can almost smell the dry wall tool).
:)

Seriously, though - I really like this.

A very cozy piece of music. I do agree with Cameron about the melody, though. But still, very nice work.
