Description:
The Full Picket Line
Kit
Bass
by Neil "Drivin' Wheel" Porter

When it's always Tomorrow, Today can get lost pretty easy.

Lyrics:
IF TOMORROW EVER COMES

If tomorrow ever comes
There’ll be no denying
You sure had me trying
To jump the shadow at my feet

If tomorrow ever comes
Pretty maids all in a row
The King’s horsemen go to and fro
Who you go tumbling after

If tomorrow ever comes
The Golden Goose, still on the lamb
Eats the crumbs that you dropped from your hand
Deep in the forest, you do what you can

As you balance on top of the wall
In swoons you do fall
And then you recall
All the ways
Led you here today
Prayers and sin intertwined
You still can’t make up your mind

If tomorrow ever comes
There’ll be no denying
You’re endlessly trying
To change what’s already done

If tomorrow ever comes
The slipknot of time
Tightens its grip
On people you thought were hip
But still they’re slipping away

As you balance on top of the wall
In swoons you do fall
And then you recall
All the ways
Cinderella obeyed
Until the Glass slipper made
Her much different than you

If tomorrow ever comes
There’ll be no denying
Your best hopes are lying
In tears that you’ve yet to cry

Yeah, if tomorrow ever comes

INFECTIOUS &mdash 01/12/08 - 06:15:45 PM
An old Fender and a tube amp - not set up for Electro pop over here, mostly jangly.

Neil's the Best, you never really know what's going to come back, but you know it's going to be Good.

Thanks for the Spin.
very best,

You keep writing them .. &mdash 01/12/08 - 05:36:59 PM
.. and I'll keep playing them Coop! Another one that was fun to be rhythm section on - you sure do know how to spin a yarn :)

I should add that Coop is a really good person to collaborate with - hope there'll be many more.

ORIGINS &mdash 01/13/08 - 08:21:13 AM
MORE Tom Petty than Dylan, I think, but it is played with a Drop C tuning so the chords are pretty Folky.

Old School stuff.

Cooper

Love the line "slipknot of time tightens its grip on people you thought were hip." I know those people;-). Hey, a little mouth harp there!
The guitars and Neil's bass (and drums?) sound perfect together. Real nice tune Coop, you sound with each post.

Cheers!

Clarence "Gatemouth" Cooper on Harp.
Good pick up, it's hard to hear in this Mix (in one Mix, it was all you heard at some points).
Ain't Production great?
Though now longing for LOGIC to get to 24-bit environment.

Thank you for the Spin and best regards,

NOT Sure it'd be much different if we both lived in Fort Worth, but there'd be More of It, for sure.

Thanks, Harold, and I knew you'd catch the Harp even though the only place you can tell for sure is the outro, it's in there.

NO DENYING &mdash 01/14/08 - 07:11:21 AM
"In The Morning, when I Rise."

The repetition doesn't work hard enough, here.
It doesn't explain itself well enough, as I listen to it now.
Must have been more into the guitar riffs (ah, details, details)!

Thank you for the Spin.

YEAH, GOOD POINT &mdash 01/14/08 - 01:19:07 PM
WHAT a keen observation - a writer's observation.

Were this first person rather than third person, it would have caused even closer parallel than just the structural repetition. I now wonder how that might have gone. "If Not For You" is so precise, both rhythmically and lyrically, it is just one of those unapproachable syntheses that he puts together, seemingly without effort!

Thank you for the Spin. I'll " 'ave a Cup" and think this through.
with best regards to you,
Cooper

LONG SHADOWS &mdash 01/15/08 - 05:35:20 PM
UNINTENTIONAL but maybe inevitable.

The single most iconic popular writer of the latter 20th century, he is inescapable in certain styles. He invented a vocabulary that permeates countless types of declamatory structures. One absorbs it by osmosis and it appears in the corners of otherwise unrelated sketches. A titanic contribution to the culture, broader and deeper than the Beatles or the Stones or the other single voices to appear in the late 50s and 60s.

A Singularity Universe. A Force of Nature.

very best to You,

Love the lyrics and the vocal delivery is top-notch. Some terrific images here, and really clever ideas ("Deep in the forest, you do what you can") I'm very impressed by the sound of the whole track. Bass is great - I would expect nothing less. And the guitar is great - love the jangly, clanging sound. Very cool. Nice work. This rocks. Peace.

REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST &mdash 01/16/08 - 08:43:16 AM
NEIL is a Master.
This was a Folky track that he came on with the Bass. Then he said maybe he'd have a run at the Kit track. That really changed everything! It's the Folky chords and vocal against the Kit that makes the dynamic - a Push and Pull, which is what the Lyric talks about at the same time.

He brought it all together.
Many thanks and very best regards,
Cooper

Love that Dylan sound that &mdash 01/15/08 - 09:14:03 PM
you are so good at having a feel for. Not that you are trying but it sure seems spot on in style. But maybe your better at it than he is :)

Love those bring me back in time chords, I remember hearing lay lady lay, when in bootcamp in the servirce and how can every get Dylan out of my mind. So sorry for saying too much about him. Love those yardbird type sounds at the end, again not that you are copying but it is just my way of likeing something cause I heard that style on the radio.

I really enjoy hearing this sounds that I heard way back when, again not at all that you are copying but the infectious tonality of the guitar. Its these things that people enjoy that they take with them the rest of their lives. I guess the radio even years ago is a very very powerful medium. But the good thing is the internet and musicians like you are making a new road into history, really !

Way to go!

Le Temps Perdu &mdash 01/16/08 - 09:19:20 AM
THERE are thought Colors and Sound patterns that stay in our coat pockets forever, no?

This is a Folky, Drop C thing that uses some made up, added-on chords that everyone from Cisco Houston, LaFarge, Von Ronk and Dylan all probably used too. It probably could have fit into a Hoot in 1966 as well as not. Just part of my landscape from who-knows-where. It's a simple few chords that fit a simple voice, simple song. The sound just fit.

It might be tempting to say songs were simpler then, but, of course, Dylan was writing "Chimes of Freedom", "God On Our Side", "It''s Alright, Ma" and so on - so THAT ain't true! But, he may have used some made up chords like some of these. I do know that there are sounds that can transport me instantly to the time I first heard them and all the things I was thinking about then.

It's some kind of magic. Proust went on and on about this once (seven volumes). Music works much faster.

Thank you and very best to You, Tiler,
Cooper

This is a great tune guys. Lovely swaying guitar and big drums propel this along - the various meditations on the title hook the verse, with a strong chorus refrain - really subtle but clever structure. Your voice sounds wise and worldy weary, coop!

NEIL brought the House with the Kit as well as the Bass.
Went from Folky to Fricking Moving!

Was missing you and then found "Got A Feeling" with the Vocal Jazz instruments - Flipped Out Fresh!

Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow... &mdash 01/17/08 - 12:09:37 PM
...Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,
To the last syllable of recorded time...

Definitely not a tale told by an idiot as Macbeth would have one believe, but by a fabulous wordsmith who shines as brightly in prose as he doth on the guitar.

Excellent job, my friend. Just a great job all the way around. You and Neil work well together. You seem to work well with those of us who hail from south of your area, and you can't get too much further south than Neil.

You know, you tune to a Drop C and everything is "Tambourine Man."

Thank you for the Spin and comment, but I will say that his early Claxon-like singing always stuck me as being as real as a holler from the field. When I've heard him play live he really delivers a song. "Visions of Johanna",- Madison Square Garden New York, being the best musical moment I've ever experienced (romanticized nostalgia, perhaps?) I think.
Just a random thought - hah.
