Description:
This has been lying in my music folder like this since late August. I had always planned on adding vocals to this, as well as some other changes, but I somehow never exactly figured out what changes to make.
Anyway, I finally decided to throw this up here, even though not quite finished, to get your opinions on this. By all means - be as honest and critical as you can, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

good one &mdash 01/13/08 - 12:09:58 PM
Very classic chord progression and a nice slow beat. Sweet and tasty melody. Strange how a song can contain elements that hundreds of other songs do, and still be unique. Look at the blues and soul tunes that are so similar in every ingredient, but each song will still be pretty unique.

This could make a great bed for a good soul tune. Maybe get some cool vocals from one of the MJs residents able to do so... add some rhythm guitar and tambourine a la motown and voila...

Personally I like it when the drums come a little more forward in the mix. Adds a bit more punch to the beat.

this a "clean" foundation! &mdash 01/13/08 - 12:59:21 PM
I really dig this melody and it has loads of potential. You might bring the drums out a touch more, but other than that you've made yourself a right fine bed here and your no slouch on that keyboard either
(};-P) Thanks for the listen,

ax

No question about it... &mdash 01/13/08 - 02:00:41 PM
This is one of your most "song-like" compositions, and could easily take a vocal... Thoddi's right, it could go in the direction of soul, maybe some "blue-eyed soul"...

I suggest calling up Steve Winwood, or maybe Daryl Hall...

It really does sound like it wants to break out into words...

It could also... &mdash 01/13/08 - 03:04:27 PM
...go in a kind of U2-ish direction, and get all anthem-y...

I agree what has been said &mdash 01/13/08 - 08:18:57 PM
this would make for a terrific soul r&b tune. You have a terrific gift for composing and it comes out again in this r&b feel type music. Done at a high level that so many of us know you have.

A treat to hear E ! Makes me proud to me a macjammer !

Would love to hear a top notch r&b male or female sing this, it deserves the best you can find E. Would love to hear backdrop vocals in harmony on this gem as well. It fact it almost screams for this.

I spent about an hour trying to find one of &mdash 01/13/08 - 08:56:50 PM
my favs of all favs r & b. That is Stephanie Mills "Never Know Love Like This Before.

I love this tune to death!

I hear shades of this in your tune, I know it is slower and has a totally different feel. But the beginning kind of startled me though I know it is very different.

I just love the feel you brought to the plate.

I hope you can can hear this great tune, maybe to give you ideas for vocals.

Again, I love Stephanie's tune very much! Glad you are hitting on that kind of musical feel.

I dig this &mdash 01/14/08 - 01:47:23 AM
I dig this. Meditative and kind of sad, though with a glimpse of light shining through. Maybe vocals of joy and hope would counterpoint the musical theme in a nice way. (Real joy needs to be based on seriousity).

good composition &mdash 01/14/08 - 10:29:35 AM
I'd suggest, based on knowing you want to take this further, and based on my own preferences, that you experiment with different instrument sounds to give the piece more depth. And then, maybe with those new sounds, you'll feel inspired to do the vocals.

I hope this helps. You are a talented musician, and I wish you the best of luck with this one!

I like this a lot &mdash 01/16/08 - 06:38:15 AM
It has a sunny appeal, with nice melody lines, and good sounds on the keys. I would concur with those who suggested the addition of vocals, and i also think the drums could be more forward in the mix, or at least thicker. Nice work. Peace.

Ahhhh...yes :) &mdash 01/16/08 - 07:01:51 PM
I'm always so glad to hear a song by you, Ein.
What a wonderful talent you are!

I love how this moves from almost brooding to brisk. It's a great start...I agree that vocals would fab with this! :)

I don't care what you say, &mdash 01/16/08 - 08:00:17 PM
it's obvious you have been reading the manual. This is very well put together Einar. Nice chords and a neat bass line. Just turn the vocal track up and you're done. I'll be listening.

agreed &mdash 01/17/08 - 10:25:18 AM
As with the others, I also agree this is a great foundation for some soulful vocalist, how about Alannah ( http://www.macjams.com/artist/Alannah )?

Lyrics? Hmmmmmmm, whose gonna write those?

Put a call out there, I'm sure you'll get some grabs.

I will be watching for this collab.

Nice.

Hi Einarus..... &mdash 01/17/08 - 01:34:15 PM
If ever a piece of music was 'commercial' then this piece of music is commercial.

It does sound 'Motown-like' but that was always a sign of professional, quality music and production, so not a bad thing.

Lyrics added to this tune would just add to its appeal to people.

Take care.

Paul

Lovely production Einar &mdash 01/17/08 - 06:47:46 PM
This has a lot of potential for the right singer/writer to work some magic. It has a song structure which would make it relatively easy for them to expand the excellent bed you've made. Thor describes what's needed really well I think.
Very lovely sounding track.

fruits... &mdash 01/17/08 - 09:52:06 PM
I'd have to say that this has a great potential for a vocal song. The melody is very "singable" and I can imagine it sounding more gospel/RnB rather than pop although I guess that depends on whose lyrics and voice are being used. It does have a work-in-progress quality to it, and knowing how grand-orchestral your works usually are, I imagine you intentionally left it raw and unfinished for other people to throw in their suggestions for embellishments. It seems begging for a little more complexity in arrangement and melody, but definitely I see its promise. I was thinking, why don't you offer it to the MacJammers for them to make some finished product out of it, just like Michael2 and Drakonis did to some of their left-in-the-shelf songs and which spawned quite a few interesting versions in varying styles. It's like sowing a seed grew and produced different fruits... (Geez... I'm rambling here...)

Very cool... &mdash 01/18/08 - 06:28:39 AM
...track. You need to find a melody line and a lyric that tells a bit of a story. I very much like the "sound" of this and the wonderful chord progressions are really satisfying. I hope you will continue to work on this number. It has the potential to be huge.
Peace.

Very joyful, sad, joyful .. &mdash 01/21/08 - 02:05:58 PM

.. make your mind up? lol - of course I jest .. it's exactly that quality I like about this. Playful melodies and instrument choices for them .. like an era gone by .. something I'd expect the milkman to whistle on his rounds ..

I'd try to bring the drums into the 'go with the feel' a bit more .. ie. automate 'em up when needed .. and back 'em off when not .. add a little more dynamic to them .. and of course, it cries out for singing... and I could hear a female R&B soulful lead .. if the backing was hip-hop'd a bit .. that skippy beat would work well.

I'd also then suggest instead of building from A to B .. do the sparser verse .. bigger chorus .. sparser verse again .. bigger final chorus approach... if you catch my drift. That's my suggestions .. you did ask my friend. :o)

Smooth ... &mdash 01/21/08 - 04:58:07 PM
Very smooth ..)

I like this soft and mellow tune.

Maybe you could vary the instruments a little more throughout the song.
