Description:
A lot of the stuff I do is retro, but not quite this retro. This one goes back a few more decades than I usually go. I think maybe I had a flashback to growing up listing to my mom's records. Who knows. I don't remember being stuck in an elevator recently.
Anyway, this is somewhat of an experiment. Trying some different types of things. Having fun. All the horns are synth. Tried doing it with the real deal, but just couldn't get it to sound right (or in tune). Lots of layers. Lots of fun mixing.
Ultimately, though, it's just a classic luuuuv song. Now, I just need to find someone to sing it to...
Enjoy.
Lyrics:
Little Bit Of Lovin’
©2008 Joseph Gurner
I can see
just how much you’ve meant to me
when I see
you smile
And I know
you were heaven sent to me
when you take
my hand
But baby, it’s been too long
and you’ve been too far away
I just can’t stand, to be with out you
for another lonely day
Take this little bit of lovin’ I can send you
Plant it deep, in your heart
Take this little bit of lovin’ I can send you
When it grows, we’ll never part
We both know, oh darling, we both know
how much it hurts to be a apart
So, take this little bit of lovin’
And keep it deep in you heart
I dream
of when we’ll be together
for
the rest of our days
I’m on my knees
just begging for your gentle touch
and one smile
from you
Oh darlin’, it’s been so long
and you’ve been so far away
I can’t take another day without you
not another lonely day
Take this little bit of lovin’ I can send you
Plant it deep, in your heart
Take this little bit of lovin’ I can send you
When it grows, we’ll never part
We both know, oh darling, we both know
just how much it hurts to be a apart
So, take this little bit of lovin’
And keep it deep in you heart

Very Very Nice Joseph &mdash 01/13/08 - 09:33:52 PM
A beautiful love song to bring your love to your lover when you can't be there with them.
Nice vocal and production is first rate. The instrumentation you chose fits the feeling of the song so well.
Great job Joseph, Kudos to you for a great love song.

'preciate the kind words. Thanks for taking the time to stop in. (BTW, if you haven't taken the time to check out Ed's latest "Shelter from the Storm" do it now. It's a great tune.) [ Reply to This ]
This is a great love song &mdash 01/13/08 - 09:48:22 PM
and - retro or not - it has a timeless quality that sets it apart from most love songs. I like the drums and bass - gives the songs a great rolling vibe - and the guitar is nicely done. The magic of the song, however, lies in the vocal performance - you sing this with real emotion and depth, and the combination of your vocal performance and the lyrics make this something special. Nicely done. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks! &mdash 01/18/08 - 10:11:06 AM
This one was really a lot of fun because it so different from what I've been doing. I enjoyed singing this one and, for once, instead of just my usually one-shot vocals (or sometimes two-shot) I actually did a number of different takes until I got it to sound "right." It was a lot of fun.
I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment. [ Reply to This ]

lush in a elevator &mdash 01/13/08 - 09:57:55 PM
by lush i mean rich in sound. not drunk and passed out on the elevator floor.
Sorta retro but timeless. has a bit of Roy Orbison sound to it. and he's still cool. the strings and horns really add a depth. [ Reply to This ]
Too many champagne cocktails.... &mdash 01/18/08 - 10:18:42 AM
One of the cool things about this style is the really rich orchestral backing. Roy Orbison is definitely someone who was able to keep that sound "cool." Thanks for listening Vic. [ Reply to This ]

stuck in an elevator &mdash 01/14/08 - 10:25:01 AM
Great 50's ballad, Great pacing, excellent song structure and instrumentation (yes the slow-attack strings are a little cheesy, but your singing more than makes up for it.) I like the lyrics and excellent singing, Joe! If this doesn't make some nice girl want to get stuck in an elevator with you, I don't know what will! :-) The fade-out on the last chord was a little abrupt, but other than that, great job!

Fourth floor, please.... &mdash 01/18/08 - 10:28:37 AM
I actually went with the "Hollywood Stings" in GB because they had that "feel" that I though was cheesily appropriate. Now I have mice running all around my house, which makes the kittens very happy, but that's another story.
The fade out is abrupt, but mainly because I accidentally cut off the natural fade of the bass and the guitar at the end. If I do another take on this one, I'll fix that and have a more natural fade out.
Now, not only do I have to find a girl, but I have to find an elevator as well. This just gets more and more complicated.... [ Reply to This ]
Awww..... &mdash 01/14/08 - 06:11:22 PM
It could be Roy Orbison or it could be Neil Young. Again.
I think this is what ol' Neil was aiming for with the Shocking Pinks...
This is that GOOD retro that you hear about, Joe...
Great Fifties sort of bass-is-the-glue arrangement...
I really like your vocal on this...

grab your partner &mdash 01/15/08 - 06:37:46 AM
I decided to get drunk midday with a possible female partner and we danced close and slow to this - if you dont mind - with much laughter - with heavy traffic queued up outside my window while we basked in our unemployment.I hate lady in red by chris de burgh - this should take its place on the jukebox.
one of my favourite songs of alll time is - 'mcCarthur park' but sung by Richard Harris - its massive.

.. &mdash 01/15/08 - 03:32:08 PM
this has a great prom, last slow dance, movie inspired thing going on .. and it's done so well and heartfelt it really puts some malt into the schmaltz. If only for the sake of suggesting something to improve, I would love a little 50s style trio male backing doing oohs/shoo wap wap or something (at the chorus).. as I can see them swaying back and forward and clicking fingers (some strings seem to be filling those shoes at the mo). Really, really &mdash 01/17/08 - 12:38:06 PM
love this unpretentious song. Great production, arrangement, playing, vocals. It reminds me of a fabulous show song such as used in 'Little Shop of Horrors' - a film I love.
Cheers

Deceptively simple, those songs from the late 50s. Your vocal suits perfectly, and the whole thing works really well. My only nit is ..... where are the doo-wops and the sha-la-las?
A good'un!

NEVER has a 57 Chevy, but I feel like I'm riding one when I hear this full-on Nelson Riddle sound.
Maybe that's Percy Faith?

Love it! &mdash 01/18/08 - 11:01:10 AM
This is definitely different for you, but I really think this is a great direction for you to explore. I actually think this is an extremely well-written song, Joe, with a very strong melody and some really nice transitions between the sections. The chorus is really hooky. It's so good, I think you could have passed this off as a cover and I completely would have fallen for it.
I'll give you a pass on the fact that you've been swigging from the reverb bottle on this one, because it adds to the feel and it's appropriate for the style of the song.
Nice emotional performance, too, and YEAH! Where the hell is that chick? [ Reply to This ]

Straight forward love song. Well-done. Reminds me of a Prom-type song. Would like U2 to do this one. Think it would be nice.
You also are a good singer/writer.
