Your enthusiasm and kind words are truly encouraging. Glad you liked the arrangement. I considered adding a middle eight section, or extending the chorus for a few more bars, but in the end I thought it had said what it was trying to say and it ought to just get off the stage! Glad you enjoyed the words, too. Thanks for your comment. I always appreciate our feedback. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

David - this is really great. The mix is fantastic (LOVE the drums on this) and the guitar sweetly (but discordantly ) chimes. Your vocal perfprmance is powerful yet restrained. This has a dark, subtle mood - I loved this. [ Reply to This ]
Hey, Steve &mdash 01/15/08 - 06:28:25 AM
Thanks for stopping by and checking this one out. Glad you liked the mix. It sounds a little different from most of my stuff, mostly, I think, because it has no acoustic guitar (alert the media!) and I have to say I found it easier with this one to get the sound I wanted. The "slightly off" guitar was a love/hate thing. As usual with me, it happened by mistake the first time. I tend to record, and mix down each session to my iPod. I listen to the mix, think about what I want to change, and the next time I get to record, I change things, or add etc. With this, I noticed the guitar, changed it and when i mixed it down to listen again, I found I missed that wobbly "A". So I went back and put it back in! Good ear, my friend. Thanks again for taking the time. I appreciate it. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

Intense &mdash 01/15/08 - 05:50:25 AM
Reminds me a little of Nick Drake.A very questioning song - inward, and dark, while asking what is creation all about - ? A well structured creation!
I'm certainly no expert but I'd like to hear you go for it more on the solo - or - add some more melodic tones in there perhaps some keys in the background to lift it up a little ethereally.

I'm really glad the words made some kind of sense. Nick Drake? I'll take that comparison any day! Interesting point about the lead - I'm not good at lead guitar. Basically I fiddle about and hope something decent happens. In this case, I recorded two leads. The one I didn't use was a lot busier, and sounded okay, but, to my ear, didn't really suit the song. This version, which I agree is very basic and minimal, fit better I thought. It could certainly be better, though! Thanks a lot for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Peace. I'm delighted you enjoyed this one, and glad you liked the lyrics. This is a song that evolved very quickly from its origins as three note chords on the acoustic (now those electric, tremelo-like notes...) to what you hear today. Whenever a song comes together fast, I worry that it's going so well because it's unoriginal or plain bad, so it's nice to get it up there and hear such kind words. I'm still bopping my head to your latest, by the way. Nice job! Thanks again for stopping by and taking the time. I appreciate it. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

Thank you, indeed &mdash 01/17/08 - 10:12:18 AM
I'm delighted you like this one, and especially happy you enjoyed the chord progression, since the whole song was built around that. I managed to refrain from "filling out" the chords into six-string versions I could tag and identify, sticking instead with the three-note patterns I originally came up with. I think this was important in guiding the melody of the song, and also in encouraging me to leave the acoustic alone for once (I tend to leave no strummable chord left unstrummed!) Thanks again for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

I really appreciate your comment. Loved the comment about overworking a song - that combo you describe sounds pretty good to me! I'm glad you think the song has enough elements. Believe me, I've messed up plenty of songs in the past by overworking, adding and adding until all I end up with is a mess. I had to force myself to stop with this one. I appreciate your kind words. Glad you liked the chord progression and the beat. I was wary of the drum pattern I chose in the beginning because I thought it was too "straight-ahead", and I started looking at other options. I finally get around to listening &mdash 01/17/08 - 07:05:33 PM
I rarely have a chance to listening to much music on MacJams, and I check this out and it's very good, worth all the fans it's earned. I do think the overall EQ is a little muddy sounding and it could be a bit crisper. I guess it depends on your monitors, but I do a lot of mastering on my KRKs these days and this sounded a bit muffled compared to other songs of this genre. Just pointing it out for your edification; it's still a really great song and recording. The song reminded me a little of Radiohead's In Rainbows in parts. Except not so whiny. [ Reply to This ]
Hi Jim &mdash 01/17/08 - 08:34:22 PM

Interesting point about the sound - I'm mixing on headphones at the moment, and I'm afraid my mixes do tend toward a lack of crispness. What struck me most about this song is the lyrics... what simplicity but such profoundness! Your voice glides like ice on ice... such smoothness of melody with the pureness of your vocal rendition. I'm not sure the rather abrupt ending is what I expected.. but I respect the choice you made. I honestly think this ranks among your best.

Greater than the sum of its parts &mdash 01/18/08 - 07:09:29 AM
is a feeling that I often get when I listen to some music. It's hard to pinpoint why it works when you look at each element in isolation. I'm flattered to think you hear something like that here. hearing the start, enjoy the mystery sounds, really sets a nice pop theme. Terrific stereo guitar sounds, makes for very nice listening.
Plus the lead really seems to flow being pushed by those stereo guitar arpeggios.
All around nice pop type sound here. Love the chorus synth whispering, especially fading at the end.
This a very nice tune here. All I can say is, lets get this on the radio! Easier said than done I know, but I am impressed by these pleasing to hear sounds.

comment on the seamlessness of the verse-chorus transition. I know firsthand (all too well) the challenge of making a piece of music like this flow, for me it is tough to not sound too "sectional" if that makes sense. Thanks for the inadvertant lesson on how to pull it off well., hope i can put it to use as well as you have. [ Reply to This ]
Hey there &mdash 01/18/08 - 12:44:14 PM
Thanks for the listen and comment. Interesting comment about transitions. I'm currently working on a song where the transition from the verse to the bridge it very abrupt. I spent a while trying to figure out a way to make it smoother, but ultimately, I think I've decided the sudden change works in a strange way. I guess it depends on the song! With this one, the change from verse to chorus was kind of organic, I think, and the "thing" that set the chorus melody in motion in my head (if that makes any sense...) Who knows how these things happen sometimes.

The whole song was done in GB4 on my iMac. I run a Shure SM58 for vocals into a Behringer UB502 mixer, on into a Behringer FCA202 Firewire interface. Through the same route, I record my Maya electric guitar, and Washburn T12 bass. All guitar and bass effects are GB. Organ and string sounds are also from GB, using the pencil tool.
