Keywords:
Echoes (5)repeats (1)rhythm (19)impulses (1)dreamlike (5)mystery (16)Men in Black II (storyline) (1)
Description:
This is short mix. One similar in content to Ethereal but rhythmically different. It is another experiment in mixing diverse (and hopefully interesting) sounds.
The longer version has more complex counter rhythms and harmony (if I dare say harmony) but it is 10 minutes, so will be uploaded in the next day or two.
This piece was completed with energyXT2, the beta version, and used 4 or 5 soft synths, a couple of effects, compression and in-line recorder, and the whole mix was programmed and recorded on the fly and then tarted up in Reaper2.
Both energyXT2 and Reaper 2 are available for Mac's so I will be completing one or two mixes on one of my Macs in the next few weeks, probably on my trip to Bochum at the end of January.
Please let me know if everything sounds too similar, as I want to pursue this type of composition over the next few months to nail the techniques down, but if everything is boringly the same then I'll follow another tangent of musical creativity. I mean there are so many ways to make music, so I'll never get bored trying different methods.

Hardware:
Sony Vaio laptop

Software:
energyXT2, Reaper 2, Goldwave, free and registered soft effects and synths

Not boring... &mdash 01/19/08 - 09:47:45 AM
...at all, Paul. Every one of these soundscapes has its own beautiful creativity and interest. You are becoming (and probably are already) the master of this kind of composition, having carved out a unique avenue of musical invention and discovery. I think the "application" of your compositions is in film, but that should not limit how you go about your process.
Peace.

Thanks Paul.... &mdash 01/20/08 - 03:58:16 AM
The mixes I release on here are indeed probably suitable for backing tracks to movies. This genre seems to be my focus during this part of my musical interests.

The way I produce these pieces lends itself readily to this genre. The programming of phrases and parts can be minutes or hours long, plus the number of parts can be as many as I want, so the whole thing can be both structured and tailored for more or less any piece of film and of any subject. The mode of the piece can also be changed to anything in my imagination as well as the normal, safe, recognized conventional modes.

We'll see what comes out of the melting pot next.

Take care.

Paul

I really enjoyed this - &mdash 01/19/08 - 12:11:12 PM
found everything the be discreet and integrated at the same time - quite excellent. Being a fan of Eno's Discreet music - I really appreciate this sort of thing.

Hi Bud.... &mdash 01/20/08 - 04:07:28 AM
Thanks for the kind comments. I too am a big fan of Eno's music and my music does sound similar to his.
Until less than a year ago I hadn't heard any of Eno's albums and when others on MJ's started saying that my music sounded similar to Eno's I listened to everything I could get my hands on, and they're correct in the comparison, but I start with an idea and follow it through, putting it together with my own preferences, so it probably would have turned out this way had Eno not come along.

Take care.

Paul

Could this be more cool? This would be perfect to do.....ANYTHING by! The ethereal feel is very moving, in a non-invasive sort of way. I love the chord sequences and the voices especially.

I'm very happy that you got something out of this piece. I'm going to listen to it again, to remind me what I did with this arrangement.

Take care.

Hi Heightened.... &mdash 04/07/08 - 10:41:58 AM
You seem to have listened to a few of my pieces over the last couple of days.

I'm also happy to note that you found one or two to be OK.

(I'm also replying from the oldest one first, so this is the second one that I've seen you leaving a comment to.

Take care.

Hi Char.... &mdash 06/18/08 - 09:55:00 AM
You hit the nail on the head with enchantment. It's as good a description as any and fits very well to the idea behind the music.

Take care.

Paul
