Description:
OK, I'm fed up tinkering with this. It's the last song I've got to do for Amokopera. A lot of tidying left and an overture to finish but this is the last song.
First off, I owe a huge debt to Paddler for this. I sent him a very basic piano and vocal track and asked him to "jazz the piano part up". A cross between Satie and Mrs Mills would be good.
He delivered in spades :-) btw don't blame Richard for the piano sound, I'm afraid that's what I did to it in GB.
Lyrics and melody are by Graeme Hobbs.
Arrangement and vocals are mine (with a huge nod to Richard who gave me lots of ideas).
A short warning, although there is no profanity you might not want to play it to children or those easily offended.
I've not quite got the restrained and subtle orchestration sorted yet.
Cheers

Great Song &mdash 01/20/08 - 04:46:58 PM
This is one of the best songs I've heard on MacJams.
It sounds good to me, although the echo on your voice got a bit much at one point (fantasy part). Possibly less prominent in the mix. But the melody, lyrics and arrangement are all top notch.
I also like your voice the plaintive quality at the beginning and the carnival barker at the end.
Great song. [ Reply to This ]

Good old &mdash 01/20/08 - 05:00:33 PM
Mrs Mills! I can't imagine that this would have been typical of her song subject matter... This must have taken an age to put together - a real masterpiece in the making. Great contributions from Richard - the changes in style are excellent.

I reckon Mrs Mills &mdash 01/21/08 - 02:21:54 AM

I wonder how many are googling her (oo er missus)
Thanks for listening.

wow the first part really made you pay attention. Cool idea to then bring it back into the style of the earlier tunes. and who left the barn door open. [ Reply to This ]
That pesky barn door &mdash 01/21/08 - 11:51:29 AM
is a private joke between me and Graeme ;-)
There are some very attractive sheep though ....
I wanted this to be a real 'musical' song and my Oliver gene went into overdrive!

This is great stuff. I love it when you do these 'Musical' excerpt type songs. You have a great voice with so much expression; it sounds as if this is a professional recording from a show with you the Star, it's just great.... and just WHAT are you doing with that sheep I just heard? Didn't know you were Welsh LOLOL, really enjoyed this, cheers M [ Reply to This ]
Of course &mdash 01/20/08 - 06:31:20 PM
Richard's piano sounds great too, so all in all a good collaboration, cheers again M [ Reply to This ]

Very smooth. Great lyrics, great voice. . .great song. I'm amazed at the "character" of voices here at MacJams. That's one thing I admire in a musician, and you definitely have it.
Is this for a musical? Ending shift is HILARIOUS!!!!!!! Caught me completely off guard.
Echo at the fantasy part sound wonderful in my opinion. I don't feel like it's too much at all. [ Reply to This ]

Some of the best work I've heard Dick &mdash 01/20/08 - 09:55:17 PM
You're putting together a masterful opera by the sound of this take.
Everything is right where it should be in the mix and Richard's piano is top drawer. You vocal is the best I've hear from you Dick, congratulations for an excellent job.
The theme harks back to the 60's Make love not war era, which ain't such a bad idea.
Bravo to you and Richard

Mrs satie &mdash 01/21/08 - 12:04:37 AM
So this is how it ends... quietly, thoughtfully, but with loads of shagging. Great vocal and a lovely song, but its hard not to think of this as part of the whole. A fitting ending to a really accomplished project.
See you in the West End!

Orgasmic &mdash 01/21/08 - 05:06:10 AM
Reverb is a subjective thing, but as far as I'm concerned you got it perfect on this one.
You already know what I think of your singing voice, and this is as good an example as any of how versatile it is. It's got sweetness and power, and your comic timing is superb. Graeme's lyrics are a big help too of course, as he has such a gift for getting natural speech rhythms into orderly verse structures.
It's been a real privilege for me to see this song evolving. You've built it up into something pretty amazing.
Off to have a cold shower now. [ Reply to This ]

Dick, this song somber and takes off in unexpected directions. Another diverse installment in the Amok catalogue. Paddler does a great job on the piano part, definitely adding a special flair to the song.
Thanks

Yes, Richard did a fine job! &mdash 01/24/08 - 11:42:17 AM
He really lifted my attempt at piano and then made the second part better than I could have imagined.
Thanks Bill.

You succeed... &mdash 01/21/08 - 10:46:01 AM
...on so many levels: the song itself; the vocal rendition; the orchestration; the concept; the collaboration with so many others. This is a superb ending. I am agog (never used that word in me life!) at the versatility you bring to this. Just amazing...and so very satisfying. Now...to stage the whole thing...
(Piano is wonderful throughout. How did you pull all of this together...a rhetorical question.)
Peace.
Paul
P.S. I like the sheep. The perfect touch at the end.
Oh, and who the heck is Mrs. Mills? Now I've got to look it up. [ Reply to This ]

but this may be the song that gets be back to macjams - I hadn't listened to this since u were in the middle of recording it - er that was a while ago.I think I'm a lightweight macjammer - I did a couple of collaborations around then and that was me - shagged out for a few months.Hearing this again though is marvelous - really enjoyed it! - good to see your still writing stuff.I've been busy wiv a woman - no more said..a nudge is a as good as a wink to a blind bat etc.Great stuff! - didnt know u put all the bells and orchestra on it - sounds dead proffessional and hits me somwhere between withnail and I / a certain carousel on Brighton Beach. The sheep - the sheep.hahaha [ Reply to This ]

I came back for another listen, and this is simply the most delightful song I've heard in a long while. I stopped by your place to see what you've been up to and after looking through your tunes I came back for another listen to this one.
After listening again I agree whole heartedly with my original comments. This is one of, if not the, best pieces of work I've ever heard you do. I just had to give you another vote of congratulations for a job well done.
Kudos and Bravo my friend.
