Description:
Matt and I originally wrote this song in 2006 for Loop it or Lose it #2 (thanks, Brian!) and really had to rush to finish so that we could meet the deadline. We've always wanted to do more with it and Matt has used this time that I've been out of commission because of my flooded studio to reimagine, remix, and do all kinds of re-ing to Thistles. He's done so much that it's impossible to detail it all here, but he has done a pile of work with the mix and added new music, a new bridge and generally rearranged and polished this galore.
I'm really grateful to him for all of his hard work, especially since it's been really hard for me not to be able to particpate at MJ, these last few months. Beyond my flooded studio space and having limited computer access because I'm crammed into the corner of a little room, there have been other things to deal with and I've had far less free time than usual. Though this version of the song is the result completely of Matt slaving over a hot monitor, it's still fun for me to be back, so I'm happy.
Hope you guys enjoy!
Lyrics:
Thistles
Have you ever wondered
how you fall prey to sickness?
It doesn't come from a bag full of thistles,
painted deep dark purple,
with a skull and crossbones on the side.
The things that come to kill you, come with a smile.
One hand gives, the other takes away.
Beware of gifts from those
who've promised you they'll stay.
Beware
Have you ever wondered
if you planned to deceive me,
take my life and use it to heal yours,
then tear me away
where I wrapped around you
like a vine?
When you came to kill me, you came with a smile.
Your hands gave, your hands they took away.
Beware your kisses
and the promises you made.
Have you ever wondered
if I'll ever believe you,
that there's nothing now
that makes me have to?
I can run through the thistles
then with a shake, dismiss you.
When you come to kill me, you won't find a smile.
My hands gave, my hands can take away.
Beware the broken-hearted,
we often disobey.
P.S. We were in such a rush that the original version of this song was posted with the title "Thistle," but the title should have been "Thistles". That's been corrected here.

What a great line...
And it's not the only one in this song...
The variations on, 'The things that come to kill you, come with a smile' are also brilliant... Blues for a cruel new age...

This is &mdash 01/24/08 - 01:39:36 AM
magnificent. The lyrics and vocals are superb. I can hear how the mix has been done with loving care and I love that impatient, driving bass. Downloaded. Thanks.

Great stuff &mdash 01/24/08 - 10:30:09 AM
Fabulous lyrics ... poignant and uncompromising.
I really like the way the prickly electronica contrasts with the sweeter and smoother sound of your voice. The harmonies really work too ... they're immaculately placed to add impact and feed off the melody.
You must be one of MacJams' longest-standing collab teams by now, and I can see why. There's a great musical chemistry here. [ Reply to This ]
Great sound &mdash 01/24/08 - 01:44:29 PM
The strength of this song is the lyrics and the vocals. Kind of reminds me of Bjork (lyrically speaking). The music is a nice mix of psychedelic and dance/electo pop.
"When you come to kill me, you won't find a smile". Did you write that Lisa?

Familiarity breeds ... &mdash 01/25/08 - 01:17:43 AM
.... a really enjoyable song. That intro loop is one I've used in my techno phase, but I didn't use it anywhere near as inventively as this. Lovely lush bed with some perfect vocals Lisa. The overall quality of the production is really good. If a nit was to be picked, I'd like to hear Lisa's voice a little louder in the mix. A small nit only - great track!! Love the fx Matt.

I think the loop is the contest loop &mdash 01/26/08 - 04:13:32 PM
or if it's not, it was used to cover the contest loop. I haven't even thought about it for awhile as most of the stuff I've been working on lately is loop free. Not that there's anything wrong with loops. Some of my best friends are loops.
I think in most version of this Lisa's vocals were really high in the mix. And then we retooled the bottom end of the song and the music levels musta crept up. For the final version when we are putting our product together, whatever and whenever that may be, we'll pull the music back a bit.

Great singing (as always Lisa).

Soon as it started it brought back &mdash 01/25/08 - 06:23:40 PM
the great vibe of the original version. Really glad you went back to the drawing board and gave it the deluxe treatment. It's awesome. Vocals, production, playing - everything is cooking with gas. Great collab. [ Reply to This ]
from one collab group to another &mdash 01/25/08 - 07:26:16 PM
we know what it's like to be to get stalled in the collaborative process. This revisiting of the old song is so totally a worthwhile way to wile away the hours and days between the old and new. Great! supa-dupa as one of us is wont to say! [ Reply to This ]
Thank you &mdash 01/25/08 - 11:23:49 PM
Thanks guys for all the great comments. It has been wonderful over the last couple of days to have something positive to come and visit. I'll be back to reply in more detail, but my car was stolen and, after the rotten last few months I've had, it really was the last straw. I'm cheering up a bit and you guys are a big part of reminding me that there are lots of nice people out there in the world, still. So, thank you very, very much. I just want you to know I appreciate what you're saying and am reading everything. [ Reply to This ]

pro sound &mdash 01/26/08 - 07:51:57 AM
Thanks! &mdash 01/26/08 - 03:57:16 PM
The original had 50 or 60 tracks going, and believe it or not, this version adds more. At least I did mute a few of the tracks. Thankfully, Orbiting tracks are getting simpler. I think with Circles I could actually see all the music tracks in one window. Now, Lisa worked up a mess of vocal tracks for that one, so it's not as though we've given up on our patented wall of sound. Yet.

wow &mdash 01/27/08 - 04:05:03 PM

And Lisa...your voice is so killer on this!

More than 50 tracks? &mdash 01/28/08 - 06:08:24 AM
Almost unbelievable! First off- great song. So much going on here and all of it good. Amazing sound bed- I love how it builds toward the end.
Lisa, you have quite a way with words. My version would say something like "please don't break my heart" and beware if you do. At least that's what I read into the lyrics.
Of course, I'm probably way off base... I've never been good at subtleties. [ Reply to This ]
This sounds great &mdash 01/28/08 - 07:11:28 AM
Outstanding production. The vocal is great, and I love the lyrics - clever and with some sweet rhymes. This really has such a great sound. Love it. Nice work. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
super shiny &mdash 01/29/08 - 04:19:30 PM
just amazed how the different elements gel o rama. Lisa your voice sounds lush and smokey. Matt someday you'll reveal your tectonic mastery of the sound bed. I will then read that book and rule the airwaves. I always appreciate the disparate cameo's of unique sounds in your trax. splendids to you both [ Reply to This ]
Very good &mdash 02/02/08 - 12:15:58 PM
I really like this. Excellent vocals and exquisitely produced electronics.
It's interesting how the instrumental part is mostly that bass and all the drums. There's not a lot that fills up the harmonies. Actually, it's there, but not very prominently. At one point I felt like I could tell from the vocals that the harmony was changing, but the instrumental part didn't quite go along with that. Minor nit.
Great stuff. [ Reply to This ]
you know... &mdash 03/23/08 - 07:32:50 AM
i never knew there were any other dedicated "bands" here other than the goodwilly's. i found it by you little plug, lisa, on allen's song 'confession'... very cool!
this is really somthing. very intricate and dynamic. lisa, you voice is hypnotising, and matt, you musical bed is just super.
the overall mix is well balanced, too.
i am increasingly impressed by what the internet is able to bring together.
and to for you two to dedicatedly work together like allen and i do merits respect. it can be hard to communicate a vision across several thousand miles, by you two prove with splendor that it can be done!
