Description:
I must say that when I first got GB, I really didn't know what I was doing. This song for example takes up about 1 GB on my hard drive. I have a bunch of songs like these.
Please, don't judge them based on the production value, I know it could be better, but it's almost impossible to fix because if I work on these songs, GB craps out.
I have to say that I like this song for what it is. And if it gets good response on MacJams, I would consider redoing it.
If anyone is interested in fixing some of these songs, feel free to drop me a line.

To all who know me, I think I'll be putting some of these older ones up before more new stuff. Hope you'll hang in there with me.
Dave

Lyrics:
Too Much

I don't know what you know
But, I have to go and find the time
Find the time

I don't know where you've been
Now I'm stuck within the tragedy
My insanity

It's too much, too much
On my mind

The end is finally here
It's felt like fifty years
And I need some more
I need some more

Seems so short to me
My longevity
It goes so fast
As time goes pass

It's too much, too much
On my mind

I'm completely, totally, utterly
Emotionally, hopelessly, comfortably
Affordably, I ought to be
Brilliantly, technically, part of me's supposed to be praying
I am praying, saving, don't you here me playing
Craving, every day that I'm saying
Please me, treat me, anyway you reach me
Waiting, hating, now I see you're faking
I need you to need me
Anytime you see me
I want you, I want you, I want you

Hey, dude &mdash 01/23/08 - 06:17:00 AM
Good to see more music from you, old or new! I see what you mean about the sound on this, but I have to say, I really don't think it needs a lot done. When it comes down to it, it's a nice song - it has good changes, and some nice guitar work in there. The vocal for me is not as strong as on your more recent stuff, but the lyrics are clever and the melody is strong. It's good as it stands, but worth revisiting if you were interested in making it sound better, I'd say. By the way, what do you mean when you say GB craps out? Nice work. Peace.

I mean..... &mdash 01/23/08 - 07:58:07 AM
GB says it"s too much for it to handle. And it"s such a pain locking and unlocking the tracks (too time consuming). Too many tracks. Didn"t really know what I was doing. Had worked with ProTools, but not GB.

Just got caught up with double tracking and such. Maybe, I'll redo it.......I don't know. Maybe when I have writer"s bloke, I can redo some old ones.
Regarding the vocals: I think I have developed more confidence in the last years.

Thanks for commenting.

More more more &mdash 01/23/08 - 09:32:47 AM
You're really spoiling us at the moment! Song quality beats production value for me every time. Add agree with David - you recent vox are stonger. but the song is really good.

Are there a lot of software instruments or effects in GB - when i work with racerat, his stuff is rarely over 1 GB in logic, wgereas I'm not very good with buses and end up with massive files!

Like I said &mdash 01/24/08 - 09:17:14 AM
It was a case of not knowing what I was doing. I never get a song to 1 GB, not even close. In the beginning, a lot of tracks even blended together( I can here other tracks when I isolate another), just weird.

But, thanks for the comments and the nice words, brother.

GB and its crapping out &mdash 01/23/08 - 01:06:53 PM
I know that crapping out frustration. Getting a new computer was the best thing that ever happened to me in that department, but I had to wait three years, so I know the pain in the butt you're talking about, Dave, and how it can make you not want to work on something any more.

I'm kind of with David, though, that it sounds good as it is. I think the sound gives it a retro quality that I dig. I hear a Cure influence and I think the sound takes it more in that direction for me. I really dig the lyrics on the outro and I think your vocal is actually really good, has a nice tossed-off energy that is completely appropriate for the song and I'd hate to see you go back and try to polish it up too much.

One trick I learned for preserving processing power in GB was to turn off reverb in all the tracks until the very end. It's the biggest processor hog by a mile and if you work without it, it will free up a lot of resources for you. That way you won't have to lock and unlock quite as often.

Thanks for stopping by and for the tech advice. I have tried that and it does improve. I probably won't tinker with the old songs anymore. It just hard to your babies go, sometimes.

Thanks again,

nice song &mdash 01/23/08 - 05:02:10 PM
a gig huh? that's crazy. i've never come close to that, but it's because I don't want to deal with mixing that many tracks. i think this is a great song (really nice bridge). worth fixing up a bit. maybe you could make it easier for yourself and export different parts of the song to iTunes (like the guitrs or the rhythm section) and then fly the AIFFs back into GB. the file would be a lot smaller then. your vox sound good to me, but you are definitely getting better and better these days. thanks for posting this one.

Nice Tune &mdash 01/23/08 - 05:16:36 PM
The opening guitar reminds me of one of my favorite
rock songs "One Rainy Wish" by J. Hendrix
and the rest is pretty darn good as well, keep 'em coming...

I consider myself to be a big, not huge, but big Hendrix fan.
I don't remember the title, but I bet I'll recognize the song when I hear it again. I'm horrible with names and titles......you know.

the song is great! Don't give up on it.

Good advice &mdash 01/24/08 - 09:40:45 AM
I really have learned a lot over the last year and I'm familiar with those tips, but I'd love to show you what a mess this song is on the board. It's just overwhelming.

Really glad you liked it.

I'll save this on for a B-Side collection and rarities.

I turned the vocals up just before uploading this one and they're still too low. I'll never be able to get this right.

Thanks Len for the good words, anyway.

Art Rock... &mdash 01/24/08 - 09:40:19 AM
...is an excellent description.

You're very modest, which I respect immensely.

I think very highly of your production skills and love your songwriting. The builds and changes in timbre are excellent in this.

And I always enjoy your lyrics...

I have no Bio up on my page, but I must say that I look at myself more as I writer than a performer. And for you to say that you like the lyrics is the highest compliment for me. Also thanks for the kind words concerning the production.

I'll keep 'em coming if you will.

Too Too much &mdash 01/24/08 - 05:34:53 PM
Greatness, Love the swirly guitar that gives way to a great change. The feeling in your vocals are real. There is a lot of power in this. When you sing to much on my mind I think Syd Barret. Live with in with out is a nod to zeppelin then the beatles come flying at me then the absortion is complete! WOW!

Nice Guitar &mdash 01/25/08 - 03:42:41 PM
and the vocal is great too, for me (not being a technical 'buff' it could just do with Volume, but I think the balance of sounds is OK i.e. vocal and backing. I really think it's worth re-doing if you want a 'better' sound'. I'd try putting it through Audacity and 'Amplify' it a couple of times, to see what that does, but I like it as it stands, cheers M

Could always use tech tips. Not really my strength. Who knows, I might re-recorded when I have writer's bloke one day.
Thanks M

Very cool song and worth another go - &mdash 01/25/08 - 06:34:23 PM
if you're up for it. Ditto what M2 said. I often do some premixing to iTunes and then bring stuff back in - otherwise my mac chokes - but it also gives me the chance to think of parts a sections - which adds a different dimension to the process.
Don't get me wrong though - this really cool as it is - but you've really brought your newer stuff to a whole other level.

Howdy Dave,
You know, I'm not one to speak about production as I consider only the song, since my production is haphazard. Lyrically & melodically and emotionally... you have powerpacked work, Dave and this is no exception!!!! I just know what I like and I really like "Too Much" and you should be proud of this one too!!!!!! Awesome!!!!!!!!!
Best to you,
Wade

Consider the song! &mdash 01/28/08 - 03:00:58 AM
Right on Wade. Production is not what I'm about, but it is fun and challenging to do. I think one should always consider the song first and foremost. Sometimes people get too caught up in production and lose focus. I think that may be the problem with some on the rock music today. It needs to be more basically recorded. Rock maybe a victim of technology.
Sounds like a good theme for a forum. What do you think?

I made the mistake of recording this one early. and recording it all wrong. I would have to start from scratch. Maybe, one day.

Thanks for taking the time.
