Description:
This is a song I wrote in the late 60s I think. It was inspired by a short Hermann Hesse book, Wandering. In one sense, it is about renewal, much as the song BROKEN OLD MAN is. As an anti-war song, it talks about our responsibility to stop the killing. Maybe it was a reaction at the time to those who lived on communes and became apolitical. It is about nonviolence and recalls the song by Pete Seeger: "If you want to have great love, you've got to have great anger". (Letter to Eve)
Lyrics:
Please feel free to adapt. I kept this one simple, with just a one string guitar backing. I can see some nice harmonies, done A Cappella perhaps, with the various voices singing up and below the main melody, and perhaps others doing a counterpoint.
There's a lesson to be learned in the trees
Go to the forest
Go and you will see it
And when you return
When you return you'll pass it aorund:
The trees live and we should see that children live too
And when children die
Then we must be there
To turn death around
Armed only with love and anger
There's a lesson to be learned in the trees
They love with emerald wonder
Now go out from the forest
And bring back all the wounded.
