Description:
Well, something a little different: an invention that is sort of a fugue, or at a least a piece that crawls all over itself in imitation. Actually, it's an attempt at serial music (and, thus, the graphic above...Get it? My little inside joke.) The 12 tones of the diatonic scale are all laid out one by one before any repeats...but then I lose track of what I am doing, so the second half is retrograde inversion (the original tune backwards...or upside down...or whatever you want to call it). I really wanted to call this piece "Aggravated Assault" mostly because I thought people who've heard my other music would be a little shocked or surprised.(Sorry, Gail) We'll see. Promise two listens: it'll gnaw at you (and maybe even in a good way). I'd say "enjoy," but...well, you'll see/hear.
Lyrics:
oh, enough said just as it is...
Hardware:
Roland keyboard RD-700
Software:
bunch of software plug-ins but no loops (I don't know how to use them!)

Peace.

My oh my Paul..... &mdash 01/26/08 - 03:01:09 AM
The only less than positive comment on this is 'it was too short'. There. I've gotten that out, now for the more positive stuff.
Whilst I listened I thought of the phrase 'Pick myself up, brush myself down, and start all over again'. The differing phrases (of your piece) are OK with this concept because if anyone does something, 'fails' and starts again or starts something else, they always bring something with them from the previous experience, even if only subconsciously. This piece, to me, summed life's experience/s to a 't'.
This is yet another facet, cut upon the precious stone of Life.
I hope you gather from the above that I enjoyed this piece very much.
Take care.

Paul I'll &mdash 01/26/08 - 09:08:25 AM
tell you what this reminds me of; in those Agatha Christie films where there are creepings about and goings on in the night as we watch from a distance. The ending though, sounds like the villain found a beautiful butterfly that flew off and managed to escape. I love the instruments you chose... especially that Cor Anglais (was it?) at the start ....and that nice ending vibrato, regards M [ Reply to This ]
Cereal music?!?! &mdash 01/26/08 - 12:42:43 PM
Listen, dude, you can get all diatonic to your heart's content, but there are LAWS about puns... or there ought to be...
And there I was, looking at that graphic, thinking you'd gone and started using Fruity Loops software...
I really enjoy the composition, Paul, and I continue to admire your ability to change compositional styles... And change compositional styles convincingly, not as dabbler or dilettante... You seem assured and confident at whatever you put your hand to, and the pieces live and breathe as music, not as experiments...
The only crit I can make, and it's only a comparative crit, is that I don't think the Roland keyboard serves you as well with the instrumental sounds as the Ivory software does for piano when you use it... I don't know what's out there in sampled instrument software, but I find myself wishing that I could hear your compositions that involve other instruments recorded with the same super-high quality that you get from Ivory...

Clever stuff Paul &mdash 01/26/08 - 03:28:53 PM
Although I'm not sure that Schoenberg or Britten (for example) ever resolved the 12 tone sequence quite so well.
Wonderfully accomplished :-)

Ahhh...Fruit Loops... &mdash 01/26/08 - 03:59:08 PM
...one of my childhood favorites that I won't allow my daughter to eat...
As to the music: I love this. Had a friend in music school who was a complete virtuoso pianist and I loved when he'd play 12 tone pieces for me. Schoenberg, Stockhausen, his own "inventions"...
So: this is great. Right up one of my favorite alleys, actually. Just close my eyes and dream... [ Reply to This ]
hmmmm, well ....hmmmmm &mdash 01/26/08 - 05:06:37 PM
I am not sure about this one Paul. so...Who was murdered by a bowl of fruit loops by a cereal killer? :) Though this is different from your familiar piano music, I would still say it is very good. Makes me think of an Alfred Hitchcock movie...suspenseful and interesting. Great job. [ Reply to This ]
Twist &mdash 01/27/08 - 05:01:57 AM
Very interesting piece. Seems to very carefully follow the old form, but the sound is completely modern. The result are some wonderfully complex harmonies. Nice one!
Thanks

The Thirty Nine Step programme &mdash 01/28/08 - 10:11:34 PM
A very modern piece that bends my brain... I understand the complexity here, despite it straining my poor untrained ears a bit. Amazing scoring/writing. Technically, the overall volume was a little low and there was a chunk of silence dangling on the end of the file, that's about all I can critique :-) Definitely stretches my comfort level!

certainly different. but fun and entertaining. I kudos to you for being willing to experiment and come up with newer sounds!

Nice art.. &mdash 01/31/08 - 10:47:46 PM
Them;s fruit loops, I see. heh heh... But this isn't crazy; it is fun! I don't know about diatonic scales or retrograde inversion, but this sure is interesting. It's good to experiment and do something different sometimes. You are very creative. :-) [ Reply to This ]
Keep stretching Paul &mdash 02/03/08 - 09:32:57 AM
I love where you've gone with this. Personally - I find it quite soothing and relaxing - not aggravating at all - but then I've been living in NYC for 35 years. Feel free to go wherever you choose - it will always be sublimely musical in your hands. [ Reply to This ]

It is always a treat to hear a Paul Page tune &mdash 02/13/08 - 10:37:31 PM
it seems.
This one has a kind of detective movie, either that of a cartoon of a spooky house and characters are sneaking up stairs to a darkened room. Full of suspense, maybe even seeing falling leaves outside at night. There is even some hope in there. Seems like you have need to add beautiful part in all your music, which is a very good think. it is a style that you seemed to have achieved.
Thanks for sharing and taking the time out to upload all the great Paul Page music! [ Reply to This ]
