Song Description

Vision Quest

Lyrics:
Vision Quest

i have been sent out into the wilderness
my father did not really explain why
and my mother cried as i walked away

after two endless nights alone,
hungry and exhausted
a rabbit hopped into the trail before me
its single eye looked deep into my soul
and sent a dream into my mind

~~~
years later, once i had mastered my craft
i suddenly remembered that dream
i wonder
how can i sleep at night without really knowing why
i do the things i do
i wonder
if ancient people thought about these things gathered about their fire at night
long before they had words to express these ideas
i wonder
if we actually have the words today to
properly express these things
i wonder
why
i wonder
i wonder
how can anyone lay claim to knowledge
of the meaning of life
i wonder
if i could ever go so far into my own beliefs
as to demand that others see things my way
i wonder
That's what I'm talking about! Well, if I was as eloquent as you, that's what I'd talk about.
Sweet.
Born to wonder.... &mdash 01/28/08 - 01:46:19 AM
... but never find the answers.
Great work, Bill - you have a really unique, insightful view on this place!
it's all a long strange trip.
thank you Steve
Very nicely done &mdash 01/28/08 - 06:05:44 AM
Your voice works very well on the spoken work, and the ideas (and the depths of the ideas!) expressed here are truly insightful and thought-provoking. Love the background instrumentation - sets the stage, adds a nice touch of drama or mysticism, but does not intrude or overwhelm the voice at the center of the piece. This is a fine piece, my friend. Nicely done. Peace.
this is one of the few songs i've done with a definite goal in mind. i needed an intro song for album number 12. i had worked out a playlist that seemed to tell a story, but it needed a unifying statement. this is that song.
there were other recent tunes left over after i gathered the tunes for album 12. i put most of those in album 11 (Omega). in a sense they're opposites of each other.
thanks
my wife has a CD by R. Carlos Nakai - that inspired the flute and echo here
thanks
very nice &mdash 01/28/08 - 03:20:16 PM
reminds me of Carlos Castaneda for some reason; i like the sounds you have put behind the spoken word. very nice.
a different Carlos, and about Peru, rather than North American Indian, but i can see the link. there is likely a common heritage.
i mentioned here a number of Inuit notions around the traditional Vision Quest rite. lots of interesting meaning of life concepts in their traditions - perhaps we should all pay more attention to them.
thanks
thank you very much - i spent a bit of time trying to make it right. i had a rather stuffy nose when i recorded this, and it's funny (to me anyway) that you can hear it if you listen for it...
Beautiful piece Bill &mdash 02/02/08 - 09:06:44 PM
your voice and ideas flow straight to the brain with clarity and distinction - and the backing track is perfect. Years ago my brother had an LP that was supposed to hypnotize the listener and it sounded something like this.
i think you mentioned that LP before; i'm intrigued, can you find out the name? maybe i can find a recording of it somewhere.
this song is supposed to be the glue for this album. i guess it stands on its own pretty well too.
thanks
I think that it is a real pic into the solar system, Amazing.
Nice word content and really fits in superbly to the music.
Thanks for sharing and taking the time out to upload!
this is a NASA picture that has an urban myth behind it. it was circulated as the "Eye of God" - although it's actually the Helix Nebula. you can find some more info here:
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap030510.html
there is also another picture referred to as the "Eye of God" - the Hourglass Nebula:
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap960118.html
what attracted me to this picture for this song and album was the "eye" aspect of it. a mix of the "I" and God - and the sky - as well as "vision". it all fit nicely with the ideas and mood of the song.
thanks
I wonder, too &mdash 11/07/08 - 10:54:06 PM
If you don't have the words to express a feeling, then you don't have the feeling....?
Nice song; very soothing. But I was really convinced at 1:20.
