Description:
Was going through alternative takes, found one which sounds decent... decided to mix a shorter version (yes, 7 minutes is short, on my opinion, compare to 14...) I am the only sax player on this one, no trumpet, no second tenor, no bass solo (if you want to hear Mori's, James' and Marco's beautiful takes—listen to the full version) just me, Mori Behar is taking the bass for a walk...
Hardware:
Yamaha "CustomZ" tenor saxophone YTSZ82, Otto Link Super Tone Master 10* mouthpiece, Vandoren Traditional #3.5 reeds, RadioShack 33-3004 dynamic microphone, Oxygen8 MIDI controller, AKAI EWI4000S (custom patch for the fake trumpet)
Software:
GarageBand, UniQuest for AKAI EWI4000S

such a sweet job. that very low super B3 hummin in the background, the faint scratchiness, this is so good. The little plucking behind your seductive solo'ing! very large in my book. [ Reply to This ]

I switched the piano to organ for this one, indeed--love that sound... [ Reply to This ]

cool jazz &mdash 01/29/08 - 05:45:03 PM
When I spot the words IGSTUDIO, I know I am in for something cool and this is that way to. Lots of lush laid back sounds, terrific use of the brushes they blend in quite well with the other instruments. Nice kind of city type jazz to me. Make ya want to snap your fingers, also kind of a mystery detective feel as well.
Way to go! [ Reply to This ]

Ilya, it's always a pleasure to hear your tracks.
Very nice combination of "live" sax and synthed instruments. You accomplish a fairly realistic sound with it all.
The trumpet sound overbalanced the sax in the beginning measures, then the level dropped and blended better with the sax.
Trumpet is one of the hardest to make sound good when synthed (like violin); occasionally it sounded "synthy" on this track.
The organ sound is a cool addition. I would have liked it to sustain through while the sax/trumpet finished their phrases; it sounded a little choppy when everything cut off together. But then you sustained the organ nicely at 6:00 and beyond a couple times, then it cut off again later.
Also, the organ generally sounded too far away through my headset.
The bass line was laid-back and rather subtle; I would have liked to hear more "punch" with it.
Even with the synthed stuff, this song would benefit from punching up the balance on the organ and bass, and percussion at times. And bring down the trumpet.
Very nice musical concept, and your sax playing is a dream! Thanks for posting. [ Reply to This ]

Always loved your comments—you are the king of constructive critisizm. I just wish there was a way to update the mp3 file without uploading a new one and creating a new page for it. Anyway—a remixed version is already playing in my iTunes—many valid points, I hear them now, too. As for the synthetic sound of the trumpet—I am just starting playing with the EWI patch editor (a really not intuitive software, I must tell)... [ Reply to This ]
remixed version &mdash 01/30/08 - 10:31:08 AM
remixed version, with a toned down EWI trumpet and slightly reworked organ track. I kept the rest of the balance relationships, though, after listening... still think it's better... [ Reply to This ]
sweet bed to play in &mdash 01/29/08 - 10:56:29 PM
Nice composition!
Great job with the mix. You could have gotten James (bass2x) to blow his horn.
but
This is great top to bottom. The tones on all the sounds are very hip. I agree with one comment that the organ could come up a bit in the mix, MHO.
The bass is so sweet and laid back creating a mellow mood for your playing.
You have such a natural flow to your phrasing. You go from one chop to another stringing them together with gentle runs and blasts of energy that inspire the next phrase. Feeding into one another, and so on.....
you got a nice touch is what I'm saying
real nice tune
the overall sound is very hip and pro

James did play trumpet on the first version, and did it beautifully. I wanted this one to be just one alternative take of my solo, this is why I couldn't keep his without making the whole thing sound similar to the previous version, so I decided to try my new toy - the EWI :) [ Reply to This ]
Shades of music... &mdash 01/31/08 - 12:38:56 AM
This has images of a noir movie with a lounge scene swirling in my head... a very effective way to hypnotize and tranquilize a ruffled mind like mine at the end of a harrowing day. Really loved it... I'll have it in my ipod as an emergency tranquilizer when I'm having a bad day. It beats a pill. [ Reply to This ]

I'm not normally a jazz fan &mdash 02/05/08 - 03:11:11 PM
but this I really like. "Smouldering" is the word that comes to mind. Love the playing all round - sax, bass, B3 and drums all sound perfect - I even like the fake trumpet. Your sax playing is just so good on this.
OK now that's out of the way, I want to lavish a bit of praise on the production - excellent sounds, beautifully recorded. The recording of the sax (which I've never tried) seems like it might be a little tricky to get the nuances and various volume levels right, but you've done it really well. Acoustic bass is a tricky one to get to sit right in a mix, and you've done that too.
I really like this - congratulations! Must listen to the 14 minute version.
Cheers from Oz!

Can't add much that hasn't been said. I love the mix of live and synthed instruments. I think you got alot out of the synth trumpet even if it is still a bit electric sounding. Great production skills! [ Reply to This ]
