Description:
This is a 3 minute collab with Feter. I've built a song around one of his sweet mandolin pieces. It's another Classical/Folk piece. We hope you enjoy it! :-)
Lyrics:
Snow settles on the still land
The air is cold and biting
Then, shadows bring night
Moving over the sky, and trees, and your smile
Still, promise is ever-present in ice
Springtime will come and bring flowers,
and the sun...
Hardware:
G4, Feter's mandolin, my voice
Software:
GB2

Your mandolin inspires me &mdash 01/31/08 - 10:12:18 PM
Your little mandolin pieces contain whole stories, and this is one chapter. Thank you, Feter, for appreciating my efforts so much. You are truly a great encourager as well as a gifted musician. Thank you for the gift of sharing your compositions. :-) [ Reply to This ]
wow! Roxy &mdash 01/31/08 - 07:52:44 PM
Very very creative. All this from Mr Feter's little mandolin piece. I know this involved some hard work.....or at least it sounds like it. I love this kind of stuff and knowing the story behind it. It's just great. One of my favorite things is when you do the ahhh's in harmony......reminds me of some of those old film scores with those glorious angelic voices on top
of some beautiful music. I know Feter has to be proud. [ Reply to This ]
Thank you &mdash 01/31/08 - 10:32:13 PM
for appreciating the effort that went into this. All those notes.... :-) The mandolin piece invoked feelings that led to the song. It just wrote itself, not by note. Thank you for coming over to listen and comment. :-)

Interesting &mdash 01/31/08 - 08:17:06 PM
Beautiful voice and harmonies Roxy. Sounded like after the song with the lyrics finished, another completely different instrumental followed it.
God bless,
Rick

Yup &mdash 01/31/08 - 10:36:31 PM
The 2nd part is different, then it goes back to the original melody, with Feter's mandolin. Thank you for having a listen, and I'm glad you liked it. :-) [ Reply to This ]
Two for... &mdash 01/31/08 - 09:03:24 PM
...the price of one. Clever mix of two styles makes this a truly intriguing number. I don't believe I have ever heard anything quite like it...and I like it very very much, esp. with the hollow, open vocal duet intervals. It's somewhat Medieval in texture and the lyrics translate powerfully in this form. Roxy, it's great to hear just your own voice out front and doing all the work. Beautiful. Just beautiful.
Peace.

What's funny is, I never know what a song will be; it writes itself as I go along. I'm glad it was a style you'd not heard before, and that the experiments are working out. I appreciate your input. :-) [ Reply to This ]
Enjoyed &mdash 01/31/08 - 09:11:21 PM
the chorus especially after beginning. Enjoy the classical feel to this. There also was a Beatles overlay singing kinda feel/ flavor in there which a really enjoyed.
Very interesting and pleasant to hear.

Hi, Bill &mdash 02/01/08 - 08:54:46 AM
Oh, yeah, Here Comes the Sun- I heard that, too, after it was all done. I guess we were all influenced by the fab 4 in some ways. I am pleased that you enjoyed this. :-) [ Reply to This ]

I really enjoyed everything here. The melody is strangely different to me yet very beautiful. I almost wish there were more lyrics at the end... [ Reply to This ]

Hi,Teresa &mdash 02/01/08 - 09:00:16 AM
Thank you for commenting; I value your opinion. Not too many lyrics in this because I wanted to be sparse, like the Winter landscape. I am so happy that you and Cody liked this. :-) [ Reply to This ]
A formidable undertaking... &mdash 01/31/08 - 09:42:39 PM
... resulting in a mystic classical interlude of music and voice. Very, very well done Roxy... adding all that you did, the least of which was not your softly, superb, subtle vocal harmonies. And your musical additions envelope Feter's mandolin with skill and sensitivity.
Kudos... [ Reply to This ]
Ahhh, Jack &mdash 02/01/08 - 09:50:09 AM
Your comments are much valued and appreciated. It is work, but also great fun to take a melody written by another, and make it into a surprise piece, as you know. And working with Feter is always great. :-) [ Reply to This ]
uh... what can I say... &mdash 01/31/08 - 10:15:12 PM
Funny, this has almost a Bertolt Brecht feel (Threepenny Opera) in some ways, sort of an angular modern ode. Your singing style is different from past Roxylees I remember, this one is strident, confident, crisp as the Winter snow. It is striking, and despite its "modern" feel, I like it. Your lyrics are Haiku-like in their succinctness, creating vivid imagery with but a few syllables. Then, your creation melts so effortlessly in with Feter's soft playing.
So, I'm assuming that you received Feter's stuff, and invented your notes around that? Is this all GB pencil tool, or are you starting to input via MIDI keyboard? This is quite a huge achievement... And Feter, your playing always has such soul, don't sell yourself short, you both always impress me greatly! Thank you for sharing this gem with us!

Your comments are so thoughtful and detailed. Let me see... First, thank you muchly. :-) Your input is very much appreciated. Second, yeah,I was probably influence by Judy Collins doing a Kurt Weill song or something; Who knows how many songs are floating around in my brain after all these years? :-) Third, yes, it was pencil tooled, using various loops are starting points. I didn't change too much of the bass run, but mostly made up the other instrumentation as i went along. I'm glad you liked the sparseness of the lyrical landscape. Feter's mandolin piece set the stage for it all. :-) [ Reply to This ]
very cool &mdash 02/01/08 - 10:04:57 AM
I grew up playing classical music on cello and string bass.
So listening to this piece was very nice...and of course I loved the string bass..I still have one , but I dont play it very much.
I know how hard it is to write classical compared to other genre's.
great job!!! [ Reply to This ]

Angelic &mdash 02/02/08 - 12:34:05 AM
I think that means coming from an angel. Your voice really does sound heavenly on this. Feter came up with a nice tune and you took it up to a whole new level. Kind of thing I keep wanting to do but never seem to have the energy. Let the harps (mqndolin) play on! [ Reply to This ]

Wow! Feter and Roxylee you sound great together! What a nice mix of folk, classical, and the walking bass line flirts between classical and jazz. This is impressive work - kudos to you both.

Well made collab. I would like to hear more of your voice though I understand the need to give space to the instrumentation. I like it. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks! &mdash 02/03/08 - 10:23:43 AM
Yeah, this didn't have many words, mostly instruments. I sing more in most of my other songs. Feter's lovely mandolin piece was a chapter in a story, and I added a chapter or two. Thank you for coming by. :-) [ Reply to This ]
light at the end of the tunnel &mdash 02/03/08 - 09:35:19 AM
This is a fitting song for us here in Minnesota, where ice and sub-zero temps abound. This song gives me some hope indeed.. that we'll be feeling a little warmer soon. Haha! Your music is a gentle breeze of optimism and faith. The ending was abrupt, however, and probably that's my only pick on this one. [ Reply to This ]
Spring... &mdash 02/03/08 - 10:38:20 AM

I too am amazed &mdash 02/03/08 - 12:26:45 PM
Your sense of orchestration and production is just wonderful! Not to mention your vocals. Are these standard GB software instruments? The woodwinds sound real. You really have a gift. I am very impressed by your work and am swept away with the beauty of the piece. Also, its a different take on collaboration. Always thinking outside the box.
Bravo,

Thank you! :-) Your comments are very much appreciated. Yes, all instruments are GB, except, of course, for Feter's mandolin. This song basically wrote itself... I hear the harmonies in my head and pencil 'em in. [ Reply to This ]

Lovely singing Roxylee &mdash 02/04/08 - 11:04:37 PM
and a lovely tune too. I know how difficult it is to mix Feter's tracks into a piece with metronome, and you've done a stunning job. This reminds me so much of the Beatles in some ways (Eleanor Rigby of course).
Isn't it a nice feeling when you do this sort of collab?!
Really well done!
Greetings from Oz!

So glad you enjoyed the singing, and thank you for the comment on mixing- I must be learning something in here!! Yippeee! But funny, I always turn off the metronome as soon as I open a new song- it makes me crazy. LOL Btw, you did an awesome job of mixing on Rain of Love. :-)

Well, thank you very much! Feter's tunes inspire me- He conveys so much with his mandolin! As I added to his tune,I had no idea where the notes would take me,: I just started placing them and experimenting with the instruments. I'm having great fun, and I'm happy that you like the results. :-) [ Reply to This ]

what a luscious beautifully vibrant vibrato - so strong, so sure.
"promise is ever-present in ice and the sun - ah" - killed me with its exquisite delicate harmony. your ending ahhhh's are the perfect final touch. you managed to match feter's mood with your instrumental contribution so brilliantly! i wish you and feter a long collaborative career - you are turning out fabulous stuff!
