Description:
This is a total re-work of something else I did but for some reason I called it with the silly title "Funkier and Funkier" but I always the bones of the piece deserved a little better treatment. In particular I didn't think the spoken part worked particularly well. I re-opened it in Logic Express and took out the funkiness and made it more ambient. The speaking is my sister Mary and my brother Bill talking about our parents, a little bit of their story. It was done for a NPR project that was traveling from town to town recording people's stories. This is just part of the whole thing they recorded, parts that I snipped out and at times looped. I added mandolin, and dobro played with an e-bow. I used some of the instrumental tracks that I'd previous recorded but altered them in various ways, a couple electric guitar tracks and a synth track and some percussion. I like it a lot better like this!

Nothing... &mdash 02/01/08 - 06:44:05 AM
...gets in anything else's way...

I love the repeating mandolin lines, and the backwards guitar. And though there isn't enough to connection between the spoken pieces to establish a narrative, there's a flavor, a sort of ambient flavor, of the people being spoken about, and their effect on other people, that comes through and is the more effective for being oblique...

So I like it...

Nice Going &mdash 02/01/08 - 11:14:09 AM
Very creative Jim! Interesting to intersperse the spoken word with instrumental backing. The way you cut and spliced really worked well. I like the fact that you created the repeated loops but then didn't use them too much so that the listener got tired of them. Lots of sounds and words coming at you!

Nicely recorded Jim .... &mdash 02/01/08 - 03:56:55 PM
...... maybe a bit soft ;)

Seriously, lovely sounds - the voices lend a point of interest to the sound bed. I often find ambient music a little dull, but the voices (being a little exotic sounding down here) lifted it to a special place.

What a nice piece of family history for you and your "tribe".

Nicely done Jim, &mdash 02/01/08 - 04:30:38 PM
The voices hit at just the right times and the music is impressive and (as usual) well recorded. Was the program "Story Cores" or something like that? Did it make the air? This was a great idea and I could listen many times. Your siblings' voices are kind of soothing. Enjoyed this.

Joe.

The project was Story Core, and I don't know if it made it to the air. I never heard it over the air, and this audio was from the CD that my sister sent me. I guess they gave you a CD of the interview after they did it. I don't feel it was as important that it got on the air, it was just neat that they went around and got people thinking about recording their family history.

This is definitely &mdash 02/01/08 - 05:56:02 PM
a work of Art. The weaving of the voices amongst the instruments with the looping etc. is excellent... really nice comforting voices. It could have been a bit longer for me, I enjoyed this, cheers M

Interesting words here &mdash 02/04/08 - 10:00:50 PM
in the tune.

Love the dangling feel and kind of really points the meaning of the tune.
Very creative in an advante garde way. The female voice, like how upfront it is. Enjoy the personal feel because of the talking, like she is talking right to me.

Thanks for sharing

Nice sounds... &mdash 02/14/08 - 05:15:53 AM
Very well done. Not my kind of music and a little too repetitive for my taste but I respect the craftsmanship. The concept is good.

I love this as a personal project. Your OWN Story Core. An artistic biography. I am impressed. Amazing how the music has molded to the rhythms of your siblings' voices. Sounds great. I'd love to hear the rest of it. I think Story Core is a great project. I like to hear them occasionally on the weekends. I remember one about a couple who divorced in middle age, just to start dating and remarry a decade or so later! Their two daughters told the story. It was captivating.
