Long time, no see... &mdash 02/01/08 - 12:30:33 AM
Hello! &mdash 02/01/08 - 12:38:20 AM
Great to be back and, man, I can't recommend SL highly enough. I was so much getting this vibe that rock sucks but they want it as hard as I can throw it at them and it is such an unbelievable gas doing it!
So good to see you're still at it. I'm already running way late but will get back as soon as I can to check out your latest stuff. Thanks! [ Reply to This ]
Now.... &mdash 02/01/08 - 12:39:52 AM
... that's more like it! Vintage fraser on the lead... full throttle, now holding back. I really like the keyboard riff. Very cool, Al. You got the goods on that 6 string.
Maybe 2nd life is leading to a third life. Kudos. [ Reply to This ]
Thank you! &mdash 02/01/08 - 12:47:54 AM
I so much appreciate it. MJ is always going to be home and I very much appreciate your thoughts.
I just can't take it seriously enough when I'm recording but seeing people out there getting off on it just pumps me right up and there's no telling what will happen. It is such incredible fun and I can't recommend it highly enough!
Thanks! [ Reply to This ]
nothing like live &mdash 02/01/08 - 10:08:28 AM
Nothing like a live show. Im working with a band now. Although its cut my writing time in 1/2. I still love the stage, and I play anytime I can!!!
very nice guitar sound......Like Alimar said,"in rare form, and welcome back" !!! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks for the welcome! &mdash 02/01/08 - 11:19:59 AM
I know what you mean about no time for recording. If I have a choice between a gig and doing some recording, I'll take the gig every time. The cool thing about SL is that there is no setup time so you can do three or four gigs a day if you're fired-up enough to handle it. Thanks for checking out the tune! [ Reply to This ]
Great &mdash 02/01/08 - 06:53:00 PM

Sounding good &mdash 02/01/08 - 10:48:32 PM
Another great testament for the Guitar Rig. Killer, larger than life sound.
As someone that has played live gigs in SL I can vouch what a kick it is. Even though we couldn't hear the crowd in world I was easily able to envision it. There are very appreciative crowds for all genres of music in SL- in that regard a very accepting community.
Funny that someone posted a link to a CNN story about musicians playing in SL- only the story was about musicians that were only playing totally recorded music... more like DJ's. They completely missed the boat!
Good stuff, Alan! Welcome home. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks! &mdash 02/02/08 - 02:48:08 AM
Guitar Rig can be trying but I did a whirl with a Line6 stompbox and never could get it clicking. Finally got fed up and went back to Guitar Rig!
Thanks so much for checking out the tune and the welcome back! [ Reply to This ]

Donno why but I came to think of MikeOldfield&TubularBells/ def not the guitar, lol that's in a Class For Itsself! but something the build up or just that it's instrumental & 'snowy'(medative we say) relaxing
It's unbeleivingly GRAND ! !! Love Your comedy/satire/parody too

Nice 70s playing Alan &mdash 02/02/08 - 05:32:56 PM
Took me way back to the times I don't remember anymore ;)
I've tried SL a number of times, but due to extremely slow "broadband" speeds down here in Oz (and a less than capable iMac) have found it difficult to "get it". I can't even LISTEN to audio on it without dropouts and buffering delays - never mind playing live on it. Maybe in 10 years when I can get some decent down/up speeds happening.
In the meantime, am happy to listen to your stuff (and PG's) in MJ.
Cheers from Down Under,

Why I'd like to flush that...... &mdash 02/03/08 - 02:07:18 AM
gutless turd, right down the very bowl he's floating in! POS. I thought this was an exceptional work in all respects! Being a fellow lead guitarist, I can truly appreciate the expression and skill that it takes to pull of very tasteful riffs such as these! Kudos on a great performance and a top notch production Alan.

I've just come back from the moors and it's so encouraging to hear you grinding on that axe. For so many years I was hearing people tell me to lighten up and to hear you belting it hard like that is a great feeling. Thanks! [ Reply to This ]
Big &mdash 02/03/08 - 01:30:24 PM
and spacious just like I'd expect from Second Life, great playing keyboards and Guitar... opening had me fooled until it kicked in. Told you I'd come here to check all is above board LOL Cheers M [ Reply to This ]

solos &mdash 02/03/08 - 01:47:40 PM
are always fun to listen to. you got some wikked lead melodies in this one. these are great tones as well. guitar rig? hmmm. you do not usually get such full rich mids from a plug in... i am impressed all the way round.

Thanks for riffing! &mdash 02/05/08 - 12:46:42 AM
I've just come back from checking out Smooth Riffing and was dazzled by your tone and your speed! I do use Guitar Rig and it's a love/hate thing but it does better than anything else I've tried. I played with Line6 for a while but got so fed up with pushing buttons that I junked it and went back to Guitar Rig 3. I know the sound I want and it's frustrating to go through all the contortions to get it but, hey, it goes with the territory as you well know. Thanks! [ Reply to This ]

ALAN!!
What up man??
Probably the most Epic thing you have done overall, after all these years here at MJ...
But.... something about yer playing man... sometimes its on, and sometimes its off... Key Boards Were cool... maybe its just me man, but some of the lead bits are just off- like the line yer trying to play is too fast for yer fingers or something....
But Epic nonetheless... maybe instead of doing the guitar bit "live" you write something out, that way you don't trap yerself like that...
Keep jammin my friend...
Cheers
(nice cheesy "live" on the mic stuff) [ Reply to This ]
Heya James! &mdash 02/05/08 - 01:03:21 AM
Been so busy it's hard to get back but it's very damn good to be here! So many of the SL performers are doing acoustic and that's fine but coming back here gives me a better perspective on what people are really doing. I just got back from checking out your latest Blue Sky tune and it's cool to hear you playing slow. Your moves are beautiful and the sound is extremely cool. You're one of the fastest guitarists I know but you bring some really great stuff to a tune when you slow down and I should probably listen to that myself!
You're quite right about being on and off as I've never charted anything as I really live to wing it, sometimes to my detriment. It really is live tho. The people listening sometimes look like hedgehogs or dragons or whatever but the ears are real. In some ways, it's more intimate than playing a real stage as, for me anyway, the lights in my eyes made it more difficult to get in touch with people whereas they're right there in SL. There's no crowd noise in the recording because I use a different computer for SL than I use for the audio stream.
Great to hear you again and thanks! [ Reply to This ]
... &mdash 02/08/08 - 06:48:00 AM
Aye Rev...
I can respect that....
But for me.... NOTHING beats playing in front of a LIVE in the moment, right in front of yer face, so close you spill yer guinness on them, crowd. And right now I am lucky enough to be doing that with my band (thats why I aint been around at MJ much lately)....
But however you rock yer own socks off is cool with me. I understand that as the years get on, and the rat race consumes you, you can't exactly get out about town every weekend. So bravo to what you CAN do for now.
I just can't trade virtual for real life.
However I aint opposed to checkin it out... is there a charge to see you on 2nd life?
Keep Jammin-
-Ronnie- [ Reply to This ]
Nope, not replacing anything &mdash 02/08/08 - 07:05:01 AM
There's definitely an intimacy to playing in SL that exceeds real life but there's nothing that can replace the excitement that's in the air at, say, just before 8:00 p.m. on Broadway just before all the plays start. There's also nothing that substitutes for playing really loud. With all my simulation stuff, I can make it seem like I'm playing loud as hell but the fact is, I ain't.
There's one thing that SL can give that real life can't and that's access to a world-wide audience. I can't give any detail right now but hope to soon about some people I've met over the last few days and it'll blow your lid right off. Yep, I'm an old fart but I'm not dead yet!
Keep it cranked, bro! [ Reply to This ]

Wye aye man...
I didn't say ya's was dead..... ( cuz if ya ever in Denver I'd hope ya check one of MY shows)...
So.... is there a charge too peep ya's shit on 2nd life?
Crankin it loud! Like always man!

No charge &mdash 02/08/08 - 06:35:43 PM
There's no charge to go into Second Life and there's no charge to see anyone playing in there but it's time-consuming learning your way around in there. Say you know someone is playing in there at 8:00 p.m. If you logged in at 7:00 p.m., for the first time ever, there's almost no chance without help that you would find the gig.
I don't mind helping newbies, unless they're completely brain-dead as some of 'em are, and I particularly don't mind helping MJ newbies but do be prepared for some frustration as you get acclimatized to the environment. If you don't mind me knowing who you are in there, IM me and tell me that you just got into the world and a chipmunk just asked you if you wanted to have sex (yes, this really happens) and you need help to get away from there before you kill that warped mutant. Nice tone and melodic phrasing.....very powerful attack on the solo....added a whole dimension to the piece....a bit like early Gary Moore and Neil Schon with Santana [ Reply to This ]

Cool Beans! &mdash 02/04/08 - 06:55:08 PM
Al,
Anyone who gives you grief for your playing needs to get over themselves. Like others have said it brings back memories of hearing stuff like this done live at the Filmore or the Bottom Line. I guess people now adays have this CD mentality and they don't appreciate the true "hang it all out there" live performance where a musician gets lost in his improv and just goes wherever the trail leads. Its also cool to hear that there is a place to perform live online. I'll have to check out second life.
Thanks,
Stephen [ Reply to This ]
Steel Streets...or Virtual Ones &mdash 02/05/08 - 01:21:30 AM
I've just come back from checking out Steel Streets and you could certainly find a home in Second Life. The only thing you don't have that you'd need is the streaming software and that's only thirty bucks! IM Silas Scarborough in Second Life and I'll be happy to get you started. I've got my own stream and easily the most spectacular stage in SL (not kidding - it's got lights, fog and all kinds of pyro) so all you've got to do is show up! Stop on by any time! Besides performing in Second Life ... I'm wondering if the Rev. Sasquatch has been doing any gospel tent revival preaching there as well? [ Reply to This ]
Hiya! &mdash 02/08/08 - 06:45:05 PM
I just got back from checking out your stuff and I thought the one with Mik & Meg was the cutest!
Reverend Sasquatch has tried to bring the Word of the Pixel God to Second Life but there's one thing you need to know about SL audio before trying anything in there: it's about 30+ seconds before anything you say or play will actually be heard by one in SL. That makes comedy practically impossible as it's nothing without immediate audience reaction. Everyone is used to it for music so it's still possible to interact; it's just a little strange getting the hang of it. [ Reply to This ]

Very &mdash 02/07/08 - 09:14:38 AM
cool. Sweet licks. I can almost picture a virtual audience rocking out to this. Do you get paid for performing in SL? I hear real money can be made there. [ Reply to This ]
Heya Stratman! &mdash 02/08/08 - 07:08:38 PM
I just got back from checking out One of these days and you definitely have the Strat sound nailed. Very pretty! I don't know what those pickups are that you mentioned but maybe I should get my Strat tricked out since I don't play it too much anymore. Yes, I know, it's heresy but the Godin is so fantastic to play and here.
Yes, you can make real money in SL but you have to be clear what real money is. It's true that you can make US dollars in there but don't expect to make big bucks. This isn't rockstar stuff by any means. Mostly it's for the love of music and showing people a good time and, what the hell, that alone does it for me as I have no doubt does it for you. If you want to check it out, please do IM Silas Scarborough and I'll try to help you get started. [ Reply to This ]
