Sounds very interesting... &mdash 09/22/04 - 02:35:59 PM
I am currently at work and don't have the headphones
with me today. After a low volume listening, I can already
hear the refrain stuck in my head...sounds very good! I'm
gonna give it a more proper listening tonight, as well as
rate it... P.S. What do you mean the kids get all the toys!?
Look at your hardware listings!!! :)

My Toys Are Very Very Very Old &mdash 09/22/04 - 03:00:14 PM
My Powerbook is owned by my employer, and just about everything else on
my list was purchased before my kids were born. I haven't bought a new
instrument in years and years . . . boohoooo . . . sob . . . . and did I mention
that my work hours were cut back and my career is in the toilet???

Poor, poor me.

Are we there yet? &mdash 09/22/04 - 04:13:13 PM
Just a little further...LOL. Sorry, your song made me
think of the question I answer 50 times during a 50
mile trip with my kids. I thought it would have been
cool to have some kid voices in the background
chanting kryptonite, or just ohhs and ahhs or
something. But, overall I dig the song. Kinda laid
back Cobainish(SP?). But, more importantly, it sounds
like you're enjoying creating this song. Had me
singing it on the way to the bathroom after listening
the second time. Not sure if that's good or bad
though. Where else can you find true unconditional
love than from your own offspring? Good choice of
honest inspriration. Thanks for sharing it. 6787

Vocals remind me a bit of Elvis Costello &mdash 09/22/04 - 04:30:36 PM
but are a tad flat/"pitchy" in places. Since this is the area
that most quickly separates the amateurs from the pros,
fixing this problem would work magic for this song. (My
tracks often have the same problem.) Like the Beatles-
like flute like sound. The two-chord progression (not
including the little break) could use more variance for
interest. The production on the other hand is awesome. I
like the way you use it to build the song to a crescendo
later in the song.

Oh and by the way, thanks for commenting on "Forgotten"!

drone effect &mdash 09/22/04 - 04:45:07 PM
You know the "drone" effect of the bagpipes, playing the
same note while the upper reed notes embellish on top?
That's what this song reminds me of, the way you repeat
the same chords and with the "wailing" vocals. Very
effective!

The lyrics speak truth. Although I'm not a parent myself, I
know plenty of them....and they often express the same
thoughts. But you also talk about kids being the joy of
your life. My only suggestion for this song, is that you
include that part in your lyrics too.

Hope your kids don't hear this one &mdash 09/22/04 - 05:05:13 PM
Just kidding. ;)

As a father of two myself, I can certainly relate. I dig it. It's got a Costello-meets-Guided By Voices quality to it... like if Elvis sang lead on a track on Bee Thousand. I like the sputtering drum hits, adds some good texture. I only suggest that this could benefit from a rock bridge -- think something like the bridge part in REM's Driver 8, only slower... and kid-related.

Brilliant... &mdash 09/22/04 - 06:53:16 PM
...what more can I say? Wonderful sound. Keep up the good work.

Again...new, loud listening! &mdash 09/22/04 - 06:59:36 PM
This IS a great song, with a lot of potential. I don't think it's quite there yet - the song seem a bit unstable at times, but then again, perhaps that's the purpose? There's a bit of Cobain in the way you sing this, and it works very well with the song as with the theme. If suggestiong anything, it would be some brake, or a bridge 'doing' something completely surprising... I would almost want to hear a part of the song go down to whispering mode, to then again really gain power... I don't know, just a suggestion.

Art Director huh? I know the feeling of having the career down the toilet. I'm a Creative Director myself, and this business is piss and shit right now. Or - to share 'some' tiny bit of light to the situation:

True art is made by the ones that suffer... ;)

Again...new, loud listening! &mdash 09/22/04 - 07:07:28 PM
Actually I am a Creative Director. Went to school for Design, but wound up as
a Copywriter, which only proves I'm a hack of all trades. As far as the
"instability" goes, that was indeed my intent. I wanted the character to sound
somewhat unsure of what he's feeling. I had considered filling the song out
more, even adding my kids voices from the original demo I did, but it almost
seemed too "deliberate." I was after raw emotion. Yep. Thanks!

sounds like a cry for help.. &mdash 09/22/04 - 07:29:18 PM
you definitely nailed the mood on this one-your kids can't
be that bad tho.. i mean, dads can get away with playing
with their kids' toys without looking stupid! ;D liked your
song

No cry for help.. &mdash 09/22/04 - 07:40:34 PM
No, I imagine my kids are no worse than most kids. In fact, in a lot of
respects I think they're better than most kids. I wouldn't trade the time I have
with my kids for anything, except maybe a little more time for myself, which
is of course selfish and greedy behavior, leading to the conflicting emotion I
am trying to express. I really didn't want to write about the good side of the
equation because it would have made for a sappier sentiment and a weaker
statement overall. Generally I'm pretty happy with my pathetic lot in life.

Parenting is tough though, aint it?? It's hard to focus on anything else.

Lame &mdash 09/29/04 - 08:17:45 AM
Man, this is sooo repetitve and uninspired. I am sorry.
This is one of the worst songs I have listened to in a long
time. I initially liked the first few tunes, but since it is not
developing in any sense, this song is becoming annoying
quickly and then a total drag.

have done the same. catchy tune paul-i'm hearing the wood, not the varnish.

Creativty in search of a reason &mdash 01/11/05 - 06:12:23 PM
I enjoyed the Lennon-esque mellotron flute, and the
Kryptonite analogy, which has a sort of double-back
cartoon-image-from-would-be-adult message. Altho it
truly is a single idea that needs development; between
Armor Pajamas and Cub Scouts, you needed to sort of
bridge tune, which this was. Nicely produced, a wonderful
example of energy sucked out, creativity in search of
something more.

You have to have kids... &mdash 02/03/05 - 04:55:02 AM
to understand the sentiment of this song I know, I've got
'em too. Cool little song- I agree with other posters who
suggest a bridge to both break up the song a little without
losing the whole- I have no energy to sing this song
because-I've-been-fighting-the-"homework"-wars-for-
so-long thing.

catchy.

Great production, Fine arrangements. Did I hear some backward guitar? I have a feeling you're quite an "enfant terrible". I like your style
