Description:
This has been kicking around this week and I tried some vocals that I hated so I stripped them off leaving little in the way of a lead in the beginning. I considered scrapping it - but what the hell it's only ones and zeros. The lead at the end is my first experiment with the Line 6 Toneport that just arrived.
BTW - I was too lazy to put my parakeets away when I recorded the acoustic - so that's what you're hearing in the background. They love to sing along.
Hardware:
iMac G5, Line6 Toneport GX, Martin D18, Danelectro DC59, Oxygen8 Keyboard for bass and electric piano
Software:
GB3, DOD drums
|
Good that you didn't scrap it &mdash 02/01/08 - 03:49:04 PM
Cool, mellow vibe. Nice changes. Would be curios to here the singing on this. Kinda' a CSN&Y thing. I could hear harmonies and such.
Good one Bud.

Nice of you to stop by. I went kinda dark with the lyrics based on the dissonant E chord in the chorus. Maybe give it another shot. [ Reply to This ]
nice parakeets! &mdash 02/01/08 - 05:30:57 PM
J/K, I didn't even notice
Really clean sound on this track, I like the laid back feel a lot.

the atypical acoustic work on this...good going !
the parakeets actually work...I hope the royalties get to them somehow...lol [ Reply to This ]

i like that one. if i get a chance i'm going to try and put something over this (although i won't be doing any recording until next week). i just did something that i hated my vox on too. must be something in the air. this is really nice tho, love the chord changes and the sound of the guitar. and i must say, nice soloing. parakeets added to it IMHO. I'll tell the keets - it'll make them happy &mdash 02/01/08 - 07:23:28 PM

parakeets in the mist &mdash 02/01/08 - 07:47:49 PM
smooth and some CSNY here as dave pointed out. I think it was the steven stills type of lead that nails it. which is great!
Now when i sing my cat joins in, sad i know. I've had to do over quite a few vocal tracks.
the line 6 has a nice crunch tone for the lead on this. I dig it. [ Reply to This ]
Let us hear your cat &mdash 02/02/08 - 10:02:59 AM
c'mon Vic - share the limelight. The Line 6 is pretty cool. I've been using a $29 Griffin iMic interface till now. [ Reply to This ]

Mellow? Maybe... &mdash 02/01/08 - 08:22:00 PM
but this packs a punch, especially in the chorus. Clean, clear sound, too. This needs an edgy vocal for sure; I'm not sure why, but I hear a gospel quartet circa 1957 (definitely NOT gentle CSNY) singing this.

I love the gospel quartet idea &mdash 02/02/08 - 10:10:33 AM
whose a pretty boy then? &mdash 02/01/08 - 09:05:15 PM
on first listen after reading your description I found myself wanting to hear a vocal melody....but on second listen I just enjoyed it for what it is...
especially the first change where the birds seem to magically transform into rattle snakes......very mellow....enjoyed it a lot........mellow/dark
nice guitar tones. [ Reply to This ]
Nice of you to drop by &mdash 02/02/08 - 10:16:30 AM
I added a rainstick to the chorus that blended in with the birds. Also when they hear dissonance they switch from tweating to chittering - much more percussive. I also doubled the guitar/bird track and offset them slightly for a 12 string effect - making their chatter that much crazier. [ Reply to This ]
smoooooth &mdash 02/01/08 - 09:59:43 PM
wow this is a great mix. quite sonically pleasing. the touch of darkness in the breaks is really cool too. great track, bud. faved [ Reply to This ]
Much appreciated &mdash 02/02/08 - 10:21:39 AM
First of all, I love this... &mdash 02/01/08 - 10:07:19 PM
I just love the lazy groove, the parakeets, the acoustic sound, the bass, and the rough lead toward the end...
And then, speaking as a guy with an iMac G5 who just got his GearBox Silver package two days ago and is still trying to make the ToneDirect thing work, this gives me hope... (The stuff works as plug-ins...I think...but so far I can't get any sound going directly through the GearBox program alone...)
Wish I could vote on it... But I will gratefully assign it a place of honor in some playlist or other...
You know, it's the RIGHT ones and zeroes...

The birds! &mdash 02/02/08 - 01:05:23 AM
The parakeets really work - i'll have to get some. Tis has a lovely lazy feel, but the chorus change has some real bite and edge to it. Lovely mix on this too. If you ever want some one elses vox on this, gimme a shout. I've a load of stuff to work on (including the Berlin Years) but this would sneak to the top of the pile ... [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Steve - glad you stopped by &mdash 02/02/08 - 10:35:44 AM
I'm trying to get the file to a sendable size. Beats me why - but it's 1.15 Gig at the moment and Pando only lets me post 1 Gig. M2 expressed interest as well. I'll post a link when I get it sorted out. Can't wait to hear Berlin. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks man &mdash 02/03/08 - 01:58:01 AM

real nice sound-bed; acoustic guitar is a pleasurable listen; whatever you're doing there you should keep that in your library.

birdland &mdash 02/02/08 - 09:04:11 AM
if you hadn't mentioned your ambient recording technique i was thinking, wow, the birds are cool. they're still great as they add another texture to the chorus. the tension on the E chord is also sweet. sort of adds a zeppelin or jeff buckley vibe to the track. would love to hear the vocal version. bring it on! [ Reply to This ]
I'm just happy this doesn't suck &mdash 02/02/08 - 10:41:11 AM
I really had my doubts about it. I was sick last week when I did this - and it wasn't a flow thing - if you know what I mean. I think the birds got it done. [ Reply to This ]
very curious &mdash 02/02/08 - 10:36:19 AM
...to hear how this will turn out with the vocals. The chorus is a stubborn fellow... won't be an easy job. Very great feeling overall and a sweet production quality.

I bought the cheapest Toneport - the GX for about $70 from Zzounds. It seems to be a decent interface - and then you get all the great amp modeling and effects. A good deal. [ Reply to This ]
That &mdash 02/02/08 - 06:29:35 PM
Line 6 solo sounds great. Really good tune - I rather like all the extraneous noises (I normally only get road noise, sawing or drilling). Would be even better with some singing! Nice clean production.

tiny birds make for great atmosphere..
this is great mixing and production. production is something that does not get enough attention around here.... heh...liked the break around 1:05 with the bongo hit(?), it added a zep feel to the tune and spiced it up nicely. i hear vocals. moody, smooth rock vocals. the electric lends itself nicely. how bout them line 6 tones? nice....

oooooo - i love the lazy, sexily confident groove - it has a beautiful thoughtful quality to it.
i really enjoyed hearing it build, ebb and flow, branch out and soar.
that change could NOT have been more opposite the starting groove in mood - cool call.
excellent blend of soft and hard/slanty and sweet.
good choice to fade there.
