Description:
Dreamers is Rabbit Hole…kind of.

It is a collaboration – my reaction to and interpretation of the track Rabbit Hole by davisamerica – one of the trippiest, most out there tracks I’ve heard in a long time. I urge anyone who hasn’t listened to it yet to check it out here:

Rabbit Hole

(there may be subliminal messages encoded in its subtle panning – you have been warned…)

davisamerica posted the track as an Open Collaboration. I loved it when I heard it, and it immediately started setting off little flashes in my brain as I listened to it. Then I downloaded it, stuck it on my iPod, and as I wandered about the skyways of St. Paul, I found myself contemplating the power of the senses (and the beauty and danger of leaving them) and the fragility of identity and the mystery of language and the kitchen sink and that one night way back when…and on and on. Don’t ask me why or how – that’s just what happened.

It took me a while to turn those firing neurons into something tangible, but I eventually came up with this. Give it a listen if you will, and then go check out the original. It’s a great track, and I offer my thanks and deep bows to davisamerica for creating it, sharing it, and for allowing ne’er do wells like me to mess around with it in such a free-spirited way.

Apart from davisamerica, much credit, and thanks, must go out to all those who acceded to my cryptic request to record themselves (or in some cases persuade their spouses to record themselves!) saying, “I don’t know who I am,” in different languages. (Not one person asked “Why?” How cool is that?) So, in order of their first appearance on the track (and with the language of their recording in parentheses), my sincere thanks to the following MacJammers (and a couple of my students):

Pafel (KiKongo); Craft (Portuguese); Irene (Korean); lengold’s wife, Zamira (Russian); Roxylee (Spanish); blaky smith (French); Heightened’s wife (Japanese); apb (Swedish); paularenson (Danish); Jim of The Infinites (East Coast Scots); Einarus (Icelandic)

I appreciate your taking the time to do something that makes no sense on any rational level. I hope you think it was worth the effort!

Thanks for listening. Enjoy. Oh, and play it loud…

Lyrics:
Dreamers

So that's it
And that's all
We thought we’d never fail
Dreamers of the fall
Tearing at the veil

I know what I’m doing
I know where I am
I see the universe
In the grain of sand
I know what time it is
I know what I see
I know whose mind it is
I know that you’re me
But I don’t know who I am

That’s it
That’s all
The dancing days are done
Stop staring at that wall
Stop hiding from the sun

That's it
It’s all done
All those hours wasted
Too old to turn and run
Too young to turn and face it

Trippy was the goal - glad you think I got there. It's all down to the vibe in davisamerica's original track really. Hard to keep your feet on the ground when you're working with that! Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Peace.

Sobering thoughts &mdash 02/05/08 - 06:47:34 AM
Yes, I like that. Thanks for stopping by and thank you also for your kind words. I'm glad you liked it. I have to say I think the real creative impulse here comes from davisamerica's original track - a rich vein. Even those parts of the track that come from me are directly inspired by or based on parts of the original. For example, the bass part over my first vocal section is a bass riff from the original track that I tried (not completely successfully!) to recreate. It was a real pleasure to work with such cool music.

Thanks for stopping by, and thanks again for the voice recording! Cheers. Peace.

Glad you liked it. The soundbed is indeed rock solid - a great high-flying mixture of rumbling bass, cool drumming, and trippy guitar work. I would never have been able to come up with anything like it, and it was a real pleasure to try to add something to it. Thanks again to your wife for her nice work - I hope she likes the result. Thanks again for stopping by and taking the time. I appreciate it. Peace.

Glad you enjoyed this one. The singing took me a while, just because I wanted to get the sense of a lot of voices. This meant, however, that I gave myself many opportunities to mess up! So there was a lot of doing and redoing before I ended up with this. Glad you think it works. Peace.

LOL. Thanks, dude &mdash 02/05/08 - 08:41:58 AM
Your "little mess" as you call it, was a blast to work with. Like I say in the song description, one of the trippiest, most out there tracks I've heard in a long time. I could not get it out my head, and the more I listened to it, the more ideas popped into my head. Honestly, if I hadn't forced myself to stop and just post the thing, I'd have been working on it forever.

Initially, I attempted to lay down some guitar over your track, and it was awful- just a bunch of squawking! The guitar work on Rabbit Hole is already so cool that everything I tried just sounded contrived and inappropriate. However, I did manage to isolate a couple of riffs (the guitar lines you can hear over the vocals in this version) and then when I focused on that killer bass riff and started coming up with vocals that seemed to match it...well the whole thing just steamrolled from there. It was at that point, by the way, that I felt compelled to send you that note just to make sure you were okay with me messing around with your music so much! Your response (something along the lines of "go for it") just sums up why this is such a cool place.

Thanks again for posting such a great track and allowing me to play around with it. I had a great time with it, and I'm glad you like it. Cheers. Peace.

WOWZER &mdash 02/05/08 - 08:14:48 AM
well what a marvelous trip!
oooooo - i love the concept of this. very cool beginning.
and that first hit of vocal harmony in one big thick sonic wall was DELICIOUS! really cool music - and you're singing in that yummy smooth style that caught my ear at HEATHEN. the transition at 3:30 to bring it all back to the beat was nothing less than brilliant! gosh, guys, this is just TOPS!

To have anything that comes out of my mouth described as a "big thick sonic wall" is flattering beyond belief! It was quite amazing the way Rabbit Hole ricocheted around my brain for such a long time. There is magic there, and I was privileged to be able to work with it. Glad you enjoyed the journey. Thanks for taking the time. I appreciate it. Peace.

You guys are expanding the walls of colaboration. It takes a lot of work and a lot of imagination and courage to re-state someone elses work. You do a great job.
Thanks,
Stephen

[ Reply to This ]
Hi Stephen &mdash 02/05/08 - 05:00:48 PM
Thanks for stopping by, and glad you liked it. I think the expanding part is coming from davisamerica rather than me. I mentioned in response to an earlier comment - but I think it's worth restating - that I would never have come up with anything like this myself. The true spark here lies with davisamerica. As for courage - well, I almost didn't do this because I felt I was sullying what was a brilliant piece of music with my adding and subtracting and slicing and dicing. But in true MacJams spirit, davisamerica said go for it, and this is the result. Happy you liked it. Peace.

P.S. When can we expect another track from your neck of the woods?

I appreciate your kind words, and thank you again for agreeing to my rather strange request. As you may have noticed, the addition of a little echo to your voice gave it great rhythm. At one stage, I was so fascinated by the interplay of all the different voices that I considered just making a track out of those vocal samples! Thanks again, and I'm glad you enjoyed the song. Peace.

Scary could be the word, alright. I think davisamerica's track is very evocative of a lot of emotions and moods (including a delightful sense of impending doom towards the end!) and that's where the real flavor comes from. Thanks a lot for stopping by and checking this out. Glad you enjoyed it. Peace.

A really classy post David &mdash 02/05/08 - 04:25:08 PM
This is one of the better posts around. Lots of brownie points from me for inventiveness - haven't listened to Davisamerica's original yet, so not sure what's them and what's you. You've achieved a really good sound on this - dynamic yet not too much so. Love the harmonies, the drums and the bass bits. Love the stops.

OK, now I've listened to the original and some of the kudos goes to Davisamerica, but it seems you have tamed the original (which was a little clippy) somehow. Your additions are really creative - congratulations all round!

Neil

I'm really glad you enjoyed this. I'm with you - vast quantities of kudos go to davisamerica! What I did stemmed from the original track, or added to it. Theirs was the real creative impulse. Thanks for the comments on the drums - I spent quite some time getting that booming sound. The bass parts come mostly from the original track. I believe it was Patrick who came up with the bass riff that I attempted (rather feebly!) to mimic over the first vocal break. The bass part at the end I came up with. Again, thanks for stopping by and listening. I apprecite it. Cheers. Peace.

Well this really .. &mdash 02/05/08 - 05:39:21 PM
.. turned out well! Extremely creative and inspired- a shining example of collaborative success. Truth be told I had little doubt you would do something wonderful .. but this is exceptional. Credit to davisamerica's origin for sure .. a fine piece .. but I must say you have injected so many new fine interesting twists and turns .. combined with your excellent vocals... absolute winner. I do love that 'drop out' thing starting around 03:20 .. and how it works in with the
beat.

Flattered to have been able to provide a tiny part in this monster.

It does have a slight Talking Heads-ish pull to it ..
when I saw that comment I had to agree.

Hopefully people will start to sit up and notice the
relative ease in which musicians & creative minds all over the world can help each other out and work together .. can only produce music which is more interesting and better than any of the studios are making.

Now I'll only charge you for the one line (since you used delay for the repeats) ;o)

PS. I have to say I loved Jim's bit .. lol .. I'm probably the only one that caught his east coast Scots "ah dinnae ken hoo ah um" .. suverant! :o)

adventure &mdash 02/06/08 - 05:47:04 PM
This is quite creative and scores high on novelty. I don't know which style you draw your inspiration from, but in a way it reminds a little bit of Europop, unique and experimental in approach. This is adventurous yet it does not wander too far from what I would consider as mainstream pop appeal. Great job!

Thank you very much for stopping by and commenting so thoughtfully. I'm really glad you enjoyed the track. I'm with you on Jack's faraway guitar - it's pretty mindblowing. There was so much cool guitar and bass work in Rabbit Hole that I was pretty much unable to add anything to it, which is why I ended up extrapolating from existing riffs, rather than trying to supplement. And so I looped. Glad you enjoyed this, and thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. Peace.

inspired &mdash 02/07/08 - 08:30:24 AM
So that's what Minnesotans are thinking about when they are wandering around those skyways in the dead of winter : >

There are many wonderful things to admire in this ambitious undertaking - from davisamerica's trippy soundtrack ... to the variety of lyrical expression you have integrated with that soundtrack ... and the global outreach program you initiated to inculcate multi-language soundbytes into the script.

This is a great example of how music engages us: it creatively challenges us to come up with a tangible expression to neuronic inspiration.

Thank you &mdash 02/07/08 - 10:05:18 AM
Thank you for such a lyrical, and thoughtful comment! I'm glad you liked the voices - there is something beautiful about listening to a language you don't know, and hearing the music inherent in every language without the "distraction" of meaning. I think it works well here to complement the mysterious magic of davisamerica's music, and I'm so grateful that so many people took the time to participate. I mean, honestly, where else would you find so many people so willing to do such a thing? Thanks again for listening, and offering such generous and considered insights. Cheers. Peace.

"foreign" languages &mdash 02/07/08 - 03:34:08 PM
I've been trying to do the same thing here among the diversity of people in New York City, where one hears so many different languages spoken. When I find myself in a situation where a distinct conversation is going on in a language foreign to me (which is virually every other language spoken beyond American English), I'll try to grab a recording of it ... with the intention of slipping it into a future recording.

I've done this on a few recordings and it adds an odd ambience to a soundtrack - even if I'm clueless to what is being added : >

I really get excited if I find myself somewhere and there are several conversations taking place at the same time in different languages!

Excellent harmony to start with, great building intro...

Fine fine vocal performance- a bit Stone Roses and nothing wrong with that!

My small contribution is well placed (to the right!) and reminds me of one of the voices on Dark Side Of The Moon...no?

What a trip gents and ladies!
I always dig this type of experimental realm, is kind of a safe avenue when it comes to Production, if you will, anything goes/works!

ProsWhat a head-trip gents!

I always dig this type of experimental realm, is kind of a safe avenue when it comes to Production, if you will, anything goes/works!

Pros: Structurally well developed from an awesome Intro to the psychedelic cut-off Ending. Great use with dynamics musically and production. Transitioning works well as instrumentation and vocal layering provides a great stereophonic mix. Excellent vocal(s) arrangement and the use of resources (i.e. spouses, relatives, friends, etc) for your project. Great guitar riffs (electric rhythm/lead and bass). Drums/percussion sound and fit the genre perfectly.

Cons/Suggestion: Bass drum (i.e. single beat thuds) a little clipping, may want to turn down the compression a tad.
