Welcome to the fun place &mdash 02/08/08 - 02:59:09 PM
Macjams and GarageBand, that is :-)

So, this is a fun bit of music, nice bit of guitar lead.

I might suggest, as you learn more about Garageband, to listen to your final result in headphones to see if it sounds good. Sometimes you can hear things that don't show up on speakers.

I would move the guitar lead back toward the center, and spread the bass & rhodes off to the sides just a bit (don't pan things too far off at first.) That is my suggestion... hope it helps!

ttfn,
Drakonis

Welcome &mdash 02/09/08 - 07:07:59 AM
I'm trying to check out you iCompers as much as possible.

This is a great start! There are a couple of spots where the timing seems off a little bit. The most noticeable spot was right in the beginning where the drum beat changed (at about 15 seconds). It may just be me being picky though! The more I listen to that section the more comfortable I am with it... I'm just nitpicking, it seems.

I really like the opening chords. You could actually extend that part a bit with room for a vocal and then kick in with everything else... just an idea.

Welcome to Macjams- just as addicting as Garageband!
Adam

Thank you Adam! MacJams is really addictive... I'll check out your songs too.

I agree that the first drum beat change is a bit " abrupt" but that is really intentional... the guitar follows the mood (at least i tried to... :) and it kind of repeats later in the song. BTW, you can't change the tempo within a same project in garageBand, can you? What software do you use? Main instrument?Rgds!

You're right! &mdash 02/09/08 - 10:59:30 AM
I was thinking of the drum pattern change, not tempo- duh! The more I listened to it the more I could hear the intent.

I mostly try to play guitar and sing. Sometimes it's not even all that bad.. heheh!

Nice piece &mdash 03/08/08 - 01:48:25 PM
I like the keyboards here, and the guitar sound is good. The drums are interesting on here. In my opinion, there are perhaps too many changeups in the drum patterns, and maybe a crash or two too many, but that's just a question of taste. I'm with Drakonis on the panning. A great tip I heard somewhere before is that if something panned hard left or right is not going to balanced by something on the other side, then it should only last a couple of bars because it can become distracting. Of course rules in music are often best broken! This is a good track. Nicely done. Peace.

Thank you &mdash 03/13/08 - 07:32:28 PM
for your comments. I'm quite ok with the drum patterns, but I understand what you are referring to. I totally agree with the panning... I will redo it when possible. Glad you stopped to listen. Rgds!

Nice feeling to this &mdash 03/12/08 - 01:43:36 AM
I like the positive energy of this song, and the interplay between the piano and the guitar. I see the guitar as being more the lead instrument, so if I were in the studio I would have advised you to mix the guitar up a bit more and the piano down a bit. You could reverse this when you wanted the piano to take the lead, too. But overall, this is a successful effort, one you can build on. I'll be interested in tracking your progress.

Thanks! &mdash 03/13/08 - 07:35:51 PM
Thanks for listening and for the tips! I will certainly pay attention to this on my next mix. I really did not define a lead instrument... what a newbie :-) I'm working on a new song and will give more attention to the mixing this time. Thanks!!

Great &mdash 03/17/08 - 01:01:54 PM
I'm new to this recording game too (it's great fun). I feel a bit awkward trying to give advice since I'm in the beginners class, but I think Futzpucker is right about defining the lead guitar more. Maybe to seperate it from the piano in the mix you could turn up the drive a little to give it a little more bite and edge so it has a differnt tone to the piano.
Looking forward to your next post.
