Description:
This all started by discovering a recording from the early 1950's of my grandfather doing a square dance call. I didn't know how to do much to fix the old recording, except I was able to adjust the key signature (probably back to where it started), and the BPM's to some extent. Because grandpa's performance would veer pretty wildly in tempo, I was only able to add snippets of his call to the jam that follows him in this piece. (I'm sure someone with more technical skill could've done much more!) Later, in continued tribute to him, I decided to add my piano version of "Simple Gifts" with a try at orchestrating to that. Guess that makes it all a fusion, of sorts.

Y'know, you never know what you get if you play arbitrary tracks on this site. This is definitely different from anything I've heard before.
But I love it! You've made a very creative hoedown out of old and new material, all enough in the same spirit that it fits nicely together, but still with interesting variety. The various bits flow into each other seamlessly.
Great stuff! [ Reply to This ]
Grandpa Calling / Simple Gifts &mdash 02/09/08 - 11:20:28 AM
Thanks Vic - first comment on my first posting on MJ. I'm really new to GB and this was the first piece I attempted after picking up a keyboard for the piano work. It kind of goes everywhere and does everything, a real "kitchen sink". thanks for taking the time to listen (because it DOES take time!) I'm on my way to your site to listen to your music. As Vic &mdash 02/09/08 - 12:15:13 PM
says - surprises are around every corner. I really admire what you have done here and it's a great way for you and others to remember your grandfather.
Welcome to Macjams.
Cheers

Amazing &mdash 02/11/08 - 12:43:47 AM
I go around MJ, then I bump into this monster pianist. Outstanding, what is killer about this is that you are so profound in your playing. This pieces has such magnificence to it.
I am amazed at how fast but most important is your playing things that really count musically.
Totally impressed, I enjoyed all your tunes that I've heard. I think there are three so far. But get em coming if you can, because your compositional style seems so developed, so invigoratingly creative. Such a breath of fresh air.

When I downloaded &mdash 02/11/08 - 12:52:53 AM
this tune I was listening and I am so impressed how you graduate to each section of the tune. The zesitness is really quite lively. Love how in the middle of the tune you go classical and how it so nicely goes into the orchestration. Cool shaker, then the more expressive orchestration and the piano is moving like majorette, then the flutes at the end so, so tastefully faded.
Again, very impressive!!!!!!! [ Reply to This ]

I like not only the aural quality of the music very much, I think the blending of Simple Gifts and your grandfather's calling adds to the over impact of the piece. [ Reply to This ]
very clever &mdash 02/12/08 - 09:44:57 PM
What a wonderful idea to incorporate your grandfather's square dance call into this very interesting piece of music!
Now I have heard ALL of your song submissions and I must say that I am very impressed with your musical sensibility and piano talents. They shine through on every piece.
They are all characterized by a very positive welling up of energy and vitality.
So far, this piece is my favorite -- it hangs together so coherently, has unexpected, new & different elements, and is "short and sweet".
The fade-out didn't quite fit. I would have much rather heard a definite ending, maybe cliche, but I yearned for more of a resolution to this energetic piece.
Your music is very enjoyable. I can't wait to hear what you come up with next!

Wow .... &mdash 02/16/08 - 09:22:03 PM
.. what a fun listen ... I could almost envision the "charleston gals doing a square dance" here .... I like the way your tunes "mix" it up some and add a blending of a "little something for everyone" all incorporated into one tune. [ Reply to This ]
Great!! &mdash 02/17/08 - 10:33:22 AM
Haha this is unique fun!
What a great idea to complete this old recording with the GB-arrangement. Very well done, I love it :-) [ Reply to This ]
very cool &mdash 02/22/08 - 11:36:14 AM
tying together your musical heritage and pay homage to the thread that runs back through your gene pool...
My parents square danced while we sulked on the sidelines... so I'm catching a glimpse from last century..
I can see you've got all sorts of musical chops... grampa would be proud [ Reply to This ]

Hi again &mdash 02/28/08 - 07:10:59 PM
Ah, now I see that you are the one who did this fantastic song. I really love this and you already know the history. Even without that this is an amazing peice of music. Good to hear it again here!! [ Reply to This ]

Momus!!! &mdash 03/19/08 - 05:49:51 PM
This reminds me of the delightful, slightly warped sillyness of Momus. You should find his tune called "Appalachia" to see what I mean.
Breath-taking piano on "Simple Things", by the way. You can play!
You music seems like Aaron Copeland on Ecstacy, which is meant to be a compliment: the piano style and quick, fun orchestral injections all roll together with your unexpected synth parts. Really cool.

You Must... &mdash 04/14/08 - 08:25:20 PM
Have a great ear I guess grandpa passed that on to you...
To bring two segments of history together is hard an rarely
done well...
But to bring them together in such a harmonically sound way
is exceptional....
I..............LIKE IT.............. [ Reply to This ]
a piece of music &mdash 05/29/08 - 10:55:51 AM
that had to be created and that the only way I can describe it. It was meant to be. Loved the blend.
Excellently put together,
