Description:
This is another exercise in orchestrating a piano piece I'd already composed. I played the piece as I wrote it into GB, then started adding orchestral voices, removing sections and aspects of the piano (and adding others) as I went along.
Hardware:
M-Audio 61es
Software:

Nice piece.
I experienced a rough spot in the transition at around 3:20-3:30, and again a little later. The mood shifts (nice) with an intensity builds (good).
Something about the levels or voicing; not sure how to explain. Maybe a tweak to the levels, maybe a few notes to foreshadow the transition... [ Reply to This ]

Melodic &mdash 02/10/08 - 03:53:11 PM
I really like this it has a strong melody and a gentle earthy appeal, very close to a New Age gentleness..Bravo [ Reply to This ]
Enjoyed &mdash 02/10/08 - 04:25:11 PM
Flows oh so nice, rolls effortlessly along. Enjoyed the types of instruments you use. Like how it breaks into the orchestrated violins. Like how you graduate to those lush sounds and seem to get richer and richer. Which is a nice sign of beautiful orchestration I think. I feel that this tune an incoming of water feeling. Like that picture holds a great surprise.
It was a pleasant surprise listening to such melodies. [ Reply to This ]

Enjoyed. Good chord progressions and voice leading. Interesting approach to orchestrating piano music, which is never an easy task. If I could offer any advice, I'd suggest a larger dynamic profile--more swells and such--there are a few places where this could perhaps be effective(although you did this at the end)? I think the piano volume is the culprit in the transition to which David refers? Lots going on and it works well! [ Reply to This ]
Very nice indeed &mdash 02/11/08 - 03:44:41 PM
A lovely relaxing tune that holds your interest as it moves along, really lovely melodies!

You have a really nice touch &mdash 02/11/08 - 11:14:13 PM
Good instrumentation around a very solid theme. Sounds a lot like some music that would be used for a nice Hallmark Hall of Fame special.

It does have a sweetness that is admirable &mdash 02/12/08 - 08:42:45 PM
I think you might be doing better than I am doing in the "you music sounds like" department. Some of my students think a lot of my songs sound like good backgrounds for porno films! LOL [ Reply to This ]
lovely &mdash 02/12/08 - 09:09:12 PM
Lots of nice little touches in this piece. Very interesting dove-tailing between the instruments.
As I mentioned in your choir piece, you have an excellent concept of orchestration; the different sounds weave in and out in a very pleasing manner, and the chord progressions unfold naturally.
I would love to see this orchestrated for a small chamber orchestra. I hope that you get all the JamPacks for GarageBand; you'll especially like JamPack 4, Symphony Orchestra. You will find excellent string sounds, winds brass and percussion that will give your pieces a much more authentic -- less synthesized -- sound.
As you delve more deeply into GarageBand, you will learn how to fine-tune each track to make them a bit more polished, more transparent, more varied.
Very nice piece!

ooops! &mdash 02/12/08 - 09:12:24 PM
I see from your other piece "The Chase" that you already HAVE JamPack 4! I look forward to hearing more of your music -- it's very unique and you bring a wonderful breath of fresh new air to this site! [ Reply to This ]
First Light &mdash 02/12/08 - 09:16:34 PM
Yeah, it was all from the Symphony Orchestra JP. However, with this piece of the ones I've posted, it always felt to me like the strings and even piano sounded more synthesized than in my other songs. I wasn't tweaking them in any different way, so this remains a mystery to me. Therefore I totally get why you'd look forward to hearing this in JP4, only to discover it IS in JP4. There's something amiss w/it that I haven't figured out yet. Anyway, thanks SO much for the thoughtful comments and the welcome. [ Reply to This ]

what a nice piece. I love the instrument selection and how each play off from one another. You have a great ear for orchestration. You have inspired me to give this a try with one of my pieces.
I love how the piano shines above the orchestra. Really nice build at the end of the piece. Just an absolutely lovely piece. Just wonderful - thank you.

The musicianship on this is great. You obviously know your way around a piano. Interesting movement and interplay in the different voices.
The production seemed a little dry to my ears, maybe play with the "Matrix Reverb" plug-in in Garage Band to give the whole track a slight recording studio feel and less of a close, crisp digital sound. I use this plug-in all the time to make the software instruments in GB and Logic sound mic'd and acoustic instead of digital MIDI imposters, even though it's all just a big hoax :)
Your tune is just ending. Loved the big crescendo; going back for a second listen.

You just received the honor of having your own playlist "Karens Wonders" in my iTunes... Now I know thats not much of an honor but these pieces are so good I needed to separate them from the commercial trash that seems to find it's way into my iTunes... 11 years old... man... gonna have to teach that kid some taste in music!!!
Karen... Keep writing... As you once said to me... "You are dripping with talent"... well not... In your cause it pours forth in a torrent!!!
