Description:
Sometimes, I like music to tell a story, or spur the imagination to create its own story. This is one such track, created as a backdrop to a potential "Once upon a time..."

As you listen to this, where do you imagine you are...?

Thanks to csengeri from The Freesound Project for the forest/crickets track:

I like it, &mdash 02/10/08 - 03:22:42 PM
but with that title it's hard to imagine anywhere but being in a "darksome wood". I was watching a Miss Marple episode on TV last night, and it would have fitted in the odd darksome wood scene in that. It does also have a feeling of "aliens in a darksome wood" though to me. I like the collection of sounds you use and the fact that it is, as the genre suggests, ambient - a great mood creating background sound bed.
Good one Mysti!

Thanks, Neil &mdash 02/10/08 - 05:19:29 PM
Yes...I probably do steer the listener too much in the title, but I figured it would sound like a dark wood to pretty much everyone. But what one might see might vary?

I do like that you put an alien twist to it!

Me...I imagine Tolkien's Mirkwood and the tangled forest.... :)

Thanks again for the comments!

I love that site-- I'm so glad I found it for my filmmaking use as well.

Very eerie, and yet, a hint of mysticism to it, nothing overtly dangerous. Good for a film scene for sure.

yay for Freesound! &mdash 02/10/08 - 05:23:35 PM
Yes..I had tried another track from a Nature sounds collection from Apple, but it seemed to 'noisy' for what I had in mind.

This was much more calm and slower...so it fit the dark mood better.

Thanks for dropping by for a listen, and for leaving a comment :)

goosebump good &mdash 02/10/08 - 06:02:19 PM
I feel the night breeze on my face. Its warm, and a little damp. I am in that moment deciding something paramount. To continue this path, or double back the way I came. I have no idea what I just meant to say. Its just the imagery talking. Your music is as 3 dimensional as the picture. Very cool

Nell mezzo del cammin... &mdash 02/10/08 - 07:56:48 PM
...di nostra vita...

I came to myself in a dark wood...

Mirkwood works, and the landscape from Orson Scott Card's Enchantment, but try reading the first verses of the first canto of the Divine Comedy while listening to this...

crickets and cicadas &mdash 02/10/08 - 09:26:26 PM
when new age music started out there was a song featuring cicada sounds. guess it was the 70's. that sort of thing resonates.

I feel peace although there are dangers outside the circle" then I get another seen(lol I got fantasy this was fun!) The same feeling of safety- & danger further away..I know I'm "protected" cause everything/body "outthere" are protecting me-be the nice wolves /owls/grasshoppers/People,so I'm not scared walking in like a BIG undergroundtunnel I can almost stand straight(I'm 1.65meters..hihi8 ) THX for the trip enjoyed it alot ! a dream &mdash 02/12/08 - 10:03:36 PM
This music reminded me of when I'm dreaming, sort of a low-level buzzing in the back of my brain as I apparently "work out" certain real-life kinks.

I don't know much about the ambient genre, but I would venture to say that pieces in the genre are generally longer than this, having more time and leisure to unfold.

You have several very good ideas in this piece which could be easily expanded and developed.

I also felt a certain urgency of tempo in this piece which could be slowed down a bit, for more relaxation, contemplation and just plain "chillin".

Your choice of sounds is very interesting and I encourage you to explore this genre in more depth -- you've got a lot of potential in this area!

perfect storytelling backdrop &mdash 02/13/08 - 09:00:11 AM
My 3 year old grandson is constantly asking me to tell him stories about him in the forest, with wolves, coyotes, etc. and i should tell him one with this song playing-it will really make it so much better! I love how you integrate the sounds so perfectly, allowing the mind to create while listening.

Reminds me of ambient music for a Myst world &mdash 02/20/08 - 09:47:59 AM
The sky is a dark purple flecked with motionless orange clouds, the land is a mix of reeds and scrub interspersed with shallow pools reflecting the sky. Other than the insects there is no one else present.

Very nicely crafted!
