Description:
Vocal/guitar song. The chords and melody have been rumbling around in me for a couple months. Over the last couple of days, the lyrics came. Also the maiden voyage for a new acoustic-electric guitar.
Lyrics:
ON MY WAY
Lyrics & Music by Jack Miller 2008
Maybe I’m just weary
Maybe I’m just sad.
Maybe I’m just wondering
About these times I’ve had.
The changes keep on coming
Traveling day by day
The storms I keep facing
Rise up in me… on my way.
What does it take to muster
The will to do what’s right?
Where does one find the wellspring
Turn darkness to light?
In this muddled mind
Can truth shine the light of day?
But in the mist one softly speaks
And He guides me… on my way.
Maybe I’m just weary
Neither hot nor cold
An undeserving story
Of grace through ages told.
I cry out for mercy
I lack the words to pray
Through the veil, a Mystery
Secures my path… on my way.

Oh, by the way, loved your post by the temptations, really hit me hard on how nostalgic it was to me.
Thanks again for the post. Loved watching and hearing that.
Thanks for your tune too!

Love the sound of the new &mdash 02/13/08 - 06:47:02 AM
guitar - lovely rich, ringing tone. Helps that the song is terrific, too! Nice changes, and an engaging melancholic lilt to your voice. You perform this with great verve and feeling - very nicely done! The lyrics are thought-provoking and very expressive, with some wonderful turns of phrase ("An undeserving story of grace through ages told") Great song.
Recording note: there seems to be quite a lot of hiss. Did you record guitar and vocal on one mic at the same time? It seems to get better near the end when you're just playing the guitar. A minor point, anyway. The song's the thing, and this one is terrific. Nicely done. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
guitar song.... &mdash 02/13/08 - 08:22:15 AM
Your comments are nice to read. The melody, as I said has been with me for a little while and I think singing that "wordless tune" for a time helped when the lyrics came. Thanks for mentioning the lyrics. I found myself tweaking them many times over the last day before recording and thought they became better as a result. The guitar recording... good to hear your comments. I am not sure about the best settings yet for recording with it yet. The hiss (sigh) is a result of not giving enough (as is to usual for me) attention on the vocal production side of things, and I think the setup I have. I'm not surprised you heard some. I do hope to revisit this song, as I like it and see this as my first stab.
Thanks so much.

I tend to be a cup half full kind of guy. But there are reasons for hope... thus the song. I'm encouraged by your comments on the singing... thanks. And it's nice to know the guitar sound is coming across OK too. Thanks for stopping by and listening, Dee.

perseverance &mdash 02/13/08 - 08:44:02 AM
Thank you for sharing your perseverance prayer with us, Jack. Very honest lyrics, sung from the heart, and the guitar frames that very nicely. I love the chord changes and the ooh yeahs between the verses. [ Reply to This ]

very nice &mdash 02/13/08 - 08:58:22 AM
good song, jack. i really like the resigned yet still hopeful feel to the arrangement. guitar sounds sweetly solid - and your vocal is great. especially liked that high little "oooo" you threw in. this comes thru with a wonderful authenticity that goes down the ear canal so well. nicely done!

Resigned yet hopeful... &mdash 02/13/08 - 09:47:59 AM
Anne, that really does capture something of where I am at in this song. Thanks for mentioning it. And your generous comments on the guitar and especially the singing are really nice to read. The "ooos" were a late add-in as I did the initial recording take. I wasn't sure at first, but then by the last recording take... I thought they belonged. So I'm glad you liked them.
cheers,
Jack

nice composition. &mdash 02/13/08 - 09:58:53 AM
I love the simple guitar and vocal sound. Being a guitar player first I am struggling to get a good recording of me singing with just my acoustic.
This sounds great. Mic or direct?
Great tune. I'll have to check out your collabs asap

getting a good recording with guitar and vocal.... me too!
Tim, the guitar was direct via M-audio MobilePre. I was concerned that it sounded too hot. But the guitar's cool sound seemed to come through nicely. When I record with my Martin then I go direct with a shure m57. Always an adventure for me when recording.
It's gratifying to me to know you thought this sounded good.
Thanks,
Jack

These treasures in Jars of Clay &mdash 02/13/08 - 10:24:43 AM
Who can figure Gods economy... I know we're around the same age... and this captures the fatigue I feel sometimes as we round the last corner down the final straightaway... I love some of these lines Jack... "Where do we find the wellspring" but the last verse brings it around..."perspective"... "an undeserving story of grace through ages told" so well crafted...
Although it's called the "curse".. I've come to see our exit from this life as a kind of Mercy... going to our rest..

Who can figure Gods economy? &mdash 02/13/08 - 11:56:04 AM
I can understand the the truths of the gospel... just that it is such a wonderful mystery of sorts in that somehow the undeserved amazing grace is so much greater than my too often faithless rags.
Scott your comments tell me we are in the same ballpark when it comes to the day in and day out stuff... it can wear. But, yep, there is that true perspective on it all... Glad you liked the lyrics!
Thanks.

Nice song Jack! &mdash 02/13/08 - 05:28:18 PM
That Ovation sounds really nice - did you use the pickup or a mic to record it? Love the harmonics on the finish - nice and ringing.
A good run for you vocally too - those high notes were really well done. The hiss is a problem though, and one that could probably be pretty easily rectified - I think it would make a really big improvement in the sound you get on what are essentially terrific songs and performances.
Neil [ Reply to This ]
Hey Neil... &mdash 02/13/08 - 07:49:32 PM
I appreciate the nice comments and the input on the hiss. Your reply note was helpful... to encourage me in acquiring a condenser mic. I am hoping that is the problem, cause I always seem to have the hiss no matter how I record. And then trying to get rid of it is frustrating... it can be done but only at the expense of the quality of the sound of the vocal... or maybe I just don't know what I'm doing... a real possibility.
cheers,

Great picture, too &mdash 02/13/08 - 07:19:15 PM
The seas are this Huge thing; many never know it, taste it, see it - some never even went to the beach, imagine that. The first time you're On the sea, an overwhelming sense of magnitude strikes you, like the Grand Canyon X a million....
When you're on the sea and far from shore - careful when you look to the sky, as the magnitude of it in clarity is a thing that will stump you and take your breath away
Those are the things that can bring perspective to how 'little' iAm, a dot.
Thanks for sharing this song, I enjoyed it very much.

Very insightful words you wrote there. And I have to agree with you. Amazing perspective one gets when out on the ocean far from land... surrounded by beauty and potential danger in both sea and sky.
Thanks for listening and leaving your thoughts.
Jack [ Reply to This ]
It's probably a bad thing... &mdash 02/13/08 - 07:58:46 PM
...that I can't hear whatever hiss Neil is talking about... I'm sure it's there if he says it is... I can't hear it, though...
I love your singing on this, Jack. You get inside the words...well, as if you'd written them. And meant them, more to the point...
The guitar track sounds better over headphones than over speakers... If I was going to pick a piece of the Dadai mix to work on, it would be tweaking the guitar sound. It certainly is clear, but it's got more metallic spang than I'd go for... And wait, didn't you get a Martin or something? Didn't you get something new a year ago? Did I imagine that?
A friend of mine gave me a CD of various artists singing Dylan songs that had a gospel tinge. This reminds me of those...
Ed [ Reply to This ]
Ah, enough with the hiss... &mdash 02/13/08 - 08:15:43 PM
who needs hiss... hissy this, hissy that... LOL I have had enough of a problem with it, that if someones says it's there, then it must be there!
Well, I always like it when you like how I sing a song... so thanks. The lyrics do carry meaning for me, so hopefully that comes through.
The guitar... I wrote earlier in a reply above, I was concerned that the guitar recorded too hot... I agree- too spangly. The AE148 is a shallow bowl guitar, so the settings on the guitar are important as to the final sound. It was my first attempt at recording with an acoustic-electric in line... so I need to experiment some more.
Yesss... I already had the thought this would have been better with the Martin... but I wanted to give this new guitar a trial run. I was second guessing myself last night after recording this with the ae148 and not the DM... you may have just confirmed my second guessing.
Sounds like a cool CD your friend gave you... can't go wrong with Dylan songs.
Thanks,
Jack

I love it &mdash 02/13/08 - 09:29:46 PM
Poetic. Direct. True.
To echo other's statements- there is a weariness to the vocal that really defines the song. Very Jim Bouchard-like, if you will... But don't get me wrong- it's 100% bona-fide Dadai-O.
I will revisit future workings because as good as the new guitar sounds, i think my preference would be to hear the warmer, more natural sounds of the mic'd Martin.
Beautiful song with any guitar, Jack! [ Reply to This ]
guitar song... &mdash 02/14/08 - 09:29:10 AM
Hi AC. Well I was feeling kind of weary when I first came up with the tune and then the lyrics... so weary-ish it is! Comparisons to Jim are nice! thanks.
The new guitar sound could have sounded better had I spent more time experimenting with it before recording. But the Martin beats it for pure beauty of sound. Although I love the harmonics on this new one. Maybe I'll post another version at some point with the Martin... for the purists like you! ;)
Thanks for chiming in. I appreciate your thoughts.

A note to the singer - maybe you on a down day, Dadai-O - head off a little, scoop up some air and that jib'll stop flapping. In a few hours you can clamp-on that propane BBQ and cook up something fresh from that salt water. Smooth sailing to you, brudda. Nice song to ponder things, nice, clean playing and singing and a good message to boot. [ Reply to This ]
