Description:
This is a collaboration I was honored to do with one of the best Bluesmen I've met.
It's a number where he plays all the instruments and I provide the lyrics and vocals. Somehow I tried to give a feeling of a live performance in the mix. Not using clapping or other effects but just the feeling and atmosphere. That's why it may sound a bit rough at parts. Well, you'll be the judge.
Thank you Ziti and Happy Birthday again.
Bernardo

Lyrics:
THE OUTSIDER (Purgatory Blues)
Lyrics by©Bernardo Barreto
Music by Ziti

Ooooh
I just walked into this town
I see no one else around
I just walked into this town
I see no one else around.
Am I here all alone
Or am I just losing my mind?
Am I here all alone
Or am I just losing my mind?,

I see a bar across the street
I might as well go there and check
I see this young girl looking at nowhere
Sitting on a distant chair.
I see a bar across the street
I might as well go there and check
I see this young girl looking at nowhere
Sitting on a distant chair.

(solo)

There's a bartender pouring drinks
But the costumers look all dead
Everyone looks quite pale.
There's a bartender pouring drinks
But the costumers look all dead
Everyone looks quite pale.

Is it me or is it them?
Someone here is going insane.

An old man approaches me,
I get ready to draw
"There's no need my son" he says
An old man approaches me,
I get ready to draw
"There's no need my son" he says

"There's no need"
"Welcome to Purgatory Town my friend"
"You have already been shot dead".

I absolutely love... &mdash 02/13/08 - 10:05:24 AM
good blues, and this is great blues. And you are so right... Ziti is one of the best and so willing to work with so many musicians (even me!).
I dig your vocal here... rough, down, and true sounding. And the harp is classic, very cool.
You succeeded... this does have a live feel... somewhere in some smoky dive, about 2:00 in the morning.

here's how &mdash 02/13/08 - 10:14:05 AM
this collab came about. I listened to some of Barretoc's material over at iComp and dug his story telling style of doing things...the smoky accent and all...at around the same time, i found a video from the old steve allen show, in which steve improvises unreal blues on the piano, while Jack Kerouac reads from ON THE ROAD...it was a great bit of american art...look for it on YouTube...

Anyway, I had this blues bed recorded and it featured what I thought was a stellar harp solo by my bandmate Scott Bronnes. He is a supremely soulful player. I thought of Barretoc and wondered if he could do some storytelling over the blues bed ala steve and jack.

Does the experiment work...? I think so...it's an interesting listen and I still think it's a killer harp solo.

welcome to MJ, barretoc

Excellent Outstanding Performance.!!! &mdash 02/13/08 - 10:20:40 AM

W0W !!!

I absoluely loved this one too, you are a star in my eyes you made this song your own. you conjured up some

powerful imagery here too for me that is ?
Not only that, everything about it evoked vivid images
especially the vocals.

I visualised this old decrepid
cowboy slowely walking his ole mule through
the scorching hot desert miles from anywhere
And he is sooooo weary singing this song.

I would love to see
A Video of this imagery would be brillant !! Very exciting do you not think.

Well done Every one Harp playing, also Magical Guitar playing to die for.

I am still learning my Harp and Gitarrr lol

Enjoyed the playing and singing &mdash 02/13/08 - 09:23:11 PM
a lot - the usual classy blues from Fran and Steve, and a different but great vocal from Bernardo.

The mix sounded a little dodgy to me though - instruments way too far back and the vocal clipping pretty continuously. Maybe that's the sound you were after, but not being a blues purist it kind of grated for me.

Obviously I'm in the minority though :)

Cheers,
Neil

love the harmonica tone! &mdash 02/13/08 - 10:06:55 PM
But I hear a lot of distortion in the vocal track. And not nice distortion. Man, but Scott's playing is sweet! And the guitar's not too shabby either! :) Not too crazy about the vocal, but the idea of a collaboration is nice in theory if not always nice in execution. Doesn't work for me in this case.

Thanks again... &mdash 02/14/08 - 05:04:25 AM
for your feedback. It is nice to hear the different opinions. As I said before I was going for some kind of rough and not so clean sound. It may work fro some and it may not work for others nevertheless it's good to hear your opinions.

Ziti, you wrangle down the blues so true. Great harp work to, gives it a total Junior Wells feel. It definitely sounds like Bern is singing into a bullet mic the way it breaks up. Great stuff.
