Find Yourself

Your head is in some other place
Where you sail in calmer waters
Everything is on the way
And your star is on the rise

Take a chance tonight
Don’t leave it too late
Don’t be right at the wrong time
Take a chance tonight
If you leave it to fate
You’ll be waiting a long time

Lead the life you wanna lead
Safe hearts and a show on Sunday
Good enough is all you need
But your eyes don’t look the same

If you don’t break away today
You’re going to sink just like a stone
If you get far enough away
You might find yourself

At least you’ve got everything you need
Agility of the heart
All of the rush but half the speed
Now you’re almost there
Right back at the start

I'm glad you liked it. It took me a while to get that part where everything comes in right. My first few attempts sounded more annoying than climactic! Glad you think it sounds okay here. The warm sound is what I was aiming for. Actually, I was hoping for a kind of Turin Brakes sound, which I did not achieve - again! Thanks, man. Peace.

Thanks, Maurice
I'm glad you liked the vocal. The lead took a while to do - simple as it sounds, my skills are pretty limited and something like that takes me a long time to get sounding halfway decent. So I'm glad you liked it. I have been working on the mixing and mastering side of things a bit more, for sure. I'm still only pottering around in the shallows, but I think the songs are sounding a bit better. Thanks again for the comment. I appreciate it. Peace.

dajama said 3354 days ago (February 16th, 2008)
Thanks, Mark
I'm glad you liked this one. There are a lot of guitars on here! To be honest, I think I often put too many guitar tracks - it's a kind of overkill, maybe because I lack confidence in my playing, or in my ability to make one or two guitar tracks carry the song. Whatver the reason, this one has two acoustic tracks playing rhythm, two more acoustic tracks picking the riff over the chorus, four electric tracks over the chorus (although two of the four are pretty undistorted, designed to add texture to the acoustic rhythm tracks) and another electric guitar track over the bridge. I may have forgotten one or two as well..Glad you think it all sounds okay.

Thanks also for your compliment on the solo. As I mentioned above in response to Maurice's comment, it took me a while to do it, and i'm still not completely happy with it. But you've got to let go sometime!

Thanks for listening and commenting. I appreciate it. Peace.

I really appreciate your comment. I loved your latest and it means a lot to me that you enjoyed this. I'm never sure about my voice and it's always encouraging to hear someone say they enjoy listening to it! As for the mix, that went through a lot of versions before I ended up with this. There are so many tracks that I was afraid stuff I like in the track would get lost, or alternatively, that the whole thing would just sound like a big, chaotic mess! Glad you think I got the balance right. Thanks again, my friend. I appreciate it. Peace.

I'm with Mark...
I think you've nailed a good, simple, full and solid acoustic guitar sound here... Huge in the headphones... To me it sounds like two of 'em...

And all the guitar playing is great, and fun to listen to. The jangly guitars, the distorted chording guitars, the guitar solo...

Sounds like you borrowed Neil Young's reverb unit...

I like the brave "off" notes in the outro...

You're a really strong singer, too, though I keep getting snagged by the guitars....

Thanks, man
I'm delighted you like the guitar sounds on here. I describe the different tracks above in a little more detail, but basically it was a case of more is more! The notes in the outro were, as I'm sure you could have guessed, completely accidental, but I thought they sounded kind of cool, so I'm glad you concur! Thanks for listening, and for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it, as always. Peace.

Nice vocal melody. Very dark when it comes to the instrumentation which sets this composition apart from most. Man I love the combination of the vocals off setting the guitars. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, my friend
I like your comment on the interplay between the vocals and the guitars. I wrote this song (like basically every song I write!) on an acoustic, and when I recorded it, I was concerned that I would lose the rhythmic back and forth between the strummed guitar and the vocal melody (which was one of the things I thought kind of worked in the song) so I'm glad you think it worked out. Thanks for listening and commenting. I appreciate it. Peace.

I'm delighted you like the lyrics, and happy you enjoyed the song overall. I have to say putting "mixing" and "genius" in the same sentence as it refers to anything I've done is way too kind, to say the least! I really am just feeling my way around and hopefully getting some sense of what sounds good. I appreciate your comment. There were a lot of elements involved in this one, and I was very worried that it would just come out as a mess! Glad to hear you think it works. As for the "punch" - that makes me especially happy. The last song I did with a lot of guitar tracks ("If The Stars Fall") seemed to me to lack that punch. In fact, I've been revisiting it recently in an attempt to make it better, but it's hard to find that oomph. So I'm happy this one has that indefinable quality! Thanks again for listening and commenting. I appreciate it. Peace.

Great Song!
This is the first song of yours that I listened to. Its a cool sound that you came up with. I particularly like the sound of the acoustic guitars on the intro. The chord progression and changes are original which is nice.

In regards to all the guitar parts. Andy Sommers of the Police used to use a lot of guitar tracks in the studio. "Live" and "studio" are two completely different animals. Its great that you can experiment like this without having to pay $100/hour, because we have our own studios! The only downside with 6-8 guitar tracks is managing them in the mixing stage.

I'm delighted you stopped by to listen. Glad you enjoyed the song. The change from the verse to the bridge is kind of abrupt, and I experimented with some more conventional changes for a while before deciding that this was what sounded best to my ears so I stuck with it! Glad you liked it. As for the mixing, I couldn't agree more. It's so hard to get that many tracks mixed so they're "there" but not taking away from everything else that's going on. I hope you think I got the balance right. Thanks for listening and commenting. I'll be by to check out your stuff soon. Cheers. Peace.

another fav
You have a sound that I really like, not exceedingly edgy but never old school either, somewhere in a middle ground where the Beatles generation and the contemporary pop generation can meet. It is both gently rocking and at the same time soothing. Your voice is mellow and clear and your lyrics leaves the song open for interpretation, deep and poetic but not overly enigmatic. Your instrumentals make me so envious of your all-around musical skills. I'm a mainstream-but-a-little-off-center kind of musician, and this song still hits my musical vein right on target.

Glad you enjoyed it. That guitar sound took a while to achieve. iTunes Ready Baby!
Pros: Very Professional sounding dajama! Great Vocals (lead/backing) and mixed (good reverberation) and good Lyrics; this piece is commercial label material (IMO). A well developed/structured piece (Intro->verses->chorus->verse->bridge/sol-verses->chorus->fade-out solo->Ending). A great full-bodied/soundbox sound you captured off your acoustic; has a soft-clean tone like nylon strings and a sharp-crisp sound using metal strings, in all actuality, acoustic guitar recording is so clean, I can hear your pick hit the strings. Your electric lead has a nice dirty-clean (term I use) sound. Drums work well. All tracks (acoustic/electric, keyboard/synth bass & drums) are mixed (gain levels, panned, effects) all well. Instrumental performance is excellent, tight rhythm section to boot!

Cons:

Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to listen and comment in so much detail. I'm flattered by your comments! Glad you liked the structure. I'm a fan of lots of different types of music - including a lot of ambient, free-ranging stuff - but when I write, I seem to tend towards certain structures. Knowing this, I try to make a point of altering the way I arrange songs - almost willfully. This one, however, has a very straightforward arrangement, and I just felt that it worked, so here it stands. As for the recording, I am not really knowledgeable when it comes to recording - there's a lot of hit and miss involved! - and I'm glad you liked the sound I ended up getting.

Thanks again for checking this one out. I'll be by to listen to your stuff soon. Cheers. Peace.

in for a another visit
The whole thing is fine music
the vocals just melt together with such ease.
Your acoustic strumming gives such a bright crisp movement to the belly of this minor chord sound
again i love this chorus
implying the last rhyme/genius
All the lyrics are very hip
all the details/perfect
nice guitar solos
a winner for sure would vote 10's if i could

Yeah!
This is just such a well-realized song, David, in every way. I can tell that you really thought about what you were doing with the arrangement and the songwriting and the production (LOVE those drums) and there's a tremendous professional solidity to the whole thing.

I really, really enjoyed it when the full instrumentation came in with the first chorus. I'm a sucker for that, but you did it really well!

Much appreciated
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Glad you liked the acoustic/ electric mixture - I write everything on the acoustic and tend to end up recording a lot of things that way without even thinking of other instrumentation. This one needed that kick, I think, for it to work. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks again. Peace.

Fantastic
There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said, so I'll just echo all the positive feedback you've been getting and say this is amazing, your voice captures my interest right away, the lyrics are great and thought-provoking, and yes, this really ought to be on the radio. The closest thing to a quibble I have is that I'm not as convinced by the lead guitar solo(s); it's probably just me, but I'm not sure they add much to the song. They don't detract either; I just wonder what might happen if you asked a few other macjammers to have a go at the guitar lead... if nothing else, I bet it would be interesting to see what you get!

Anyway, to summarize, just fantastic!

I'm delighted you liked this one. Very happy you enjoyed the lyrics - if anything I write speaks to someone, or provokes thought, then I'm very happy. Interesting point about the guitar solo. It's certainly not my strong point. I don't have a flair for it (nor do I practice enough!) and I'd bet you're right, I'm sure I'd get some very cool approaches from the amazing guitarists here at MacJams. Something to think about for the next one for sure. Thanks again for listening and commenting so thoughtfully. I appreciate it. Peace.

Really impressive arrangement
excellent changes and instrumentation - when evrything kicks in after the intro the effect is powerful and then you continue to develop it further with strings and a killer lead. Lyrics and vox super too.

Hi
I think this is really very thought provoking and I agree with Feter and Craig. Although I have only been making music about six months or less now. I am self taught. I have had the great pleasure of learning from and listening to some really great artist here on Mj's.

May be repeating
At the risk of repeating what some others may have said here, this is a wonderful piece.

The production is first rate the but the song really begins with some great lyrics. Your lyrics are universal here and it is what makes the song so good.

It could be about a whole lot of things ... love maybe but maybe in a larger sense maybe more. Maybe just take a chance to live. Maybe all it takes is just ordering something else on the menu but the T-Bone. Take a chance. BTW i love the line "All of the rush but half the speed" What a great idea for a lyric.

Thank you
Thank you so much for your kind words and considered comments. I really appreciate your comments on the lyrics, and I'm very happy they spoke to you on some level. I guess the real measure of the success of a lyric (apart from the way it syncs with the music) is whether it can be about something specific (or at least be inspired by something or - as in this case - someone) and at the same time have some kind of universal sense or appeal. I'm flattered and delighted that you hear something here that makes sense to you. Thank you for listening . I really appreciate it. Peace.

I'm glad you enjoyed this one. The acoustic is an Alvarez recorded on a Shure SM58 through a Behringer UB502 mixer and on into an FCA202 Firewire interface. Everything after that is software tweaking to get a crisper sound. Glad you liked it. Thanks again for stopping by. I really enjoyed your latest, by the way. Cheers. Peace.

I've got a problem!
I'm singing this tune day and night! You have completely destroyed my creativity! Every time I try to hum a tune I'm off into a bar of Find Yourself.

This is a damned addicting tune!!!

(Just kidding about the above! But I do find myself singing it very often...)

Thanks for checking out Mediocrity. Gail is amazing. I'll take credit for the lyrics and tune but she breathed life into the thing in a way I never could have.

I simply cannot wait for your next piece of music! I'm sure I'll be singing that one for weeks to come!

Beautiful work!

of the first songs I found when I joined MacJams. A forum entry by Composer Clark sent me here. To date I use this song as a measure of how I'm doing with my own works. I guess I'd say I use this as my high bar. If someday I can write/record a tune that even comes close I'll die a happy man. This still is platinum in my eyes!

Thanks to Mark H. for sending me to here to find a wonderful tune with a lyric that all can relate to, at different points in their life.

I know for me, it has a very relevent meaning, especially while being on the cliff of retirement, when one must eventually make the leap of faith either on one's own or the by the hatchets of administrative downsizing.

Great song.
