Description:
If you don't go, you'll never know.

Lyrics:
Find Yourself

Your head is in some other place
Where you sail in calmer waters
Everything is on the way
And your star is on the rise

Take a chance tonight
Don’t leave it too late
Don’t be right at the wrong time
Take a chance tonight
If you leave it to fate
You’ll be waiting a long time

Lead the life you wanna lead
Safe hearts and a show on Sunday
Good enough is all you need
But your eyes don’t look the same

If you don’t break away today
You’re going to sink just like a stone
If you get far enough away
You might find yourself

At least you’ve got everything you need
Agility of the heart
All of the rush but half the speed
Now you’re almost there
Right back at the start

I'm glad you liked it. It took me a while to get that part where everything comes in right. My first few attempts sounded more annoying than climactic! Glad you think it sounds okay here. The warm sound is what I was aiming for. Actually, I was hoping for a kind of Turin Brakes sound, which I did not achieve - again! Thanks, man. Peace.

Good song &mdash 02/15/08 - 04:51:13 PM
good lyrics and playing. The lead is great and the vocals excellent. You've got far more ambitious with your mixing since your return and it sounds really great, regards M

I'm glad you liked the vocal. The lead took a while to do - simple as it sounds, my skills are pretty limited and something like that takes me a long time to get sounding halfway decent. So I'm glad you liked it. I have been working on the mixing and mastering side of things a bit more, for sure. I'm still only pottering around in the shallows, but I think the songs are sounding a bit better. Thanks again for the comment. I appreciate it. Peace.

Thanks, Mark &mdash 02/16/08 - 01:34:25 PM
I'm glad you liked this one. There are a lot of guitars on here! To be honest, I think I often put too many guitar tracks - it's a kind of overkill, maybe because I lack confidence in my playing, or in my ability to make one or two guitar tracks carry the song. Whatver the reason, this one has two acoustic tracks playing rhythm, two more acoustic tracks picking the riff over the chorus, four electric tracks over the chorus (although two of the four are pretty undistorted, designed to add texture to the acoustic rhythm tracks) and another electric guitar track over the bridge. I may have forgotten one or two as well..Glad you think it all sounds okay.

Thanks also for your compliment on the solo. As I mentioned above in response to Maurice's comment, it took me a while to do it, and i'm still not completely happy with it. But you've got to let go sometime!

Thanks for listening and commenting. I appreciate it. Peace.

I really appreciate your comment. I loved your latest and it means a lot to me that you enjoyed this. I'm never sure about my voice and it's always encouraging to hear someone say they enjoy listening to it! As for the mix, that went through a lot of versions before I ended up with this. There are so many tracks that I was afraid stuff I like in the track would get lost, or alternatively, that the whole thing would just sound like a big, chaotic mess! Glad you think I got the balance right. Thanks again, my friend. I appreciate it. Peace.

I'm with Mark... &mdash 02/15/08 - 09:54:58 PM
I think you've nailed a good, simple, full and solid acoustic guitar sound here... Huge in the headphones... To me it sounds like two of 'em...

And all the guitar playing is great, and fun to listen to. The jangly guitars, the distorted chording guitars, the guitar solo...

Sounds like you borrowed Neil Young's reverb unit...

I like the brave "off" notes in the outro...

You're a really strong singer, too, though I keep getting snagged by the guitars....

I'm delighted you like the guitar sounds on here. I describe the different tracks above in a little more detail, but basically it was a case of more is more! The notes in the outro were, as I'm sure you could have guessed, completely accidental, but I thought they sounded kind of cool, so I'm glad you concur! Thanks for listening, and for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it, as always. Peace.

Very melodic &mdash 02/15/08 - 10:38:03 PM
Nice vocal melody. Very dark when it comes to the instrumentation which sets this composition apart from most. Man I love the combination of the vocals off setting the guitars. Thanks for sharing.

I like your comment on the interplay between the vocals and the guitars. I wrote this song (like basically every song I write!) on an acoustic, and when I recorded it, I was concerned that I would lose the rhythmic back and forth between the strummed guitar and the vocal melody (which was one of the things I thought kind of worked in the song) so I'm glad you think it worked out. Thanks for listening and commenting. I appreciate it. Peace.

wow
a keeper/got it
I love when the electric G comes in for soloing
just the whole thing is really flowing and confidently performed.
Love the acoustic recording job
Moody blues a bit somehow
the strings in the back maybe and the dramatic presentation.

I'm delighted you like the lyrics, and happy you enjoyed the song overall. I have to say putting "mixing" and "genius" in the same sentence as it refers to anything I've done is way too kind, to say the least! I really am just feeling my way around and hopefully getting some sense of what sounds good. I still never feel happy about any mix I do, but eventually I just have to surrender to the enemy that is time and stop myself fiddling! I appreciate your comment. There were a lot of elements involved in this one, and I was very worried that it would just come out as a mess! Glad to hear you think it works. As for the "punch" - that makes me especially happy. The last song I did with a lot of guitar tracks ("If The Stars Fall") seemed to me to lack that punch. In fact, I've been revisiting it recently in an attempt to make it better, but it's hard to find that oomph. So I'm happy this one has that indefinable quality! Thanks again for listening and commenting. I appreciate it. Peace.

Great Song! &mdash 02/17/08 - 10:34:11 PM
This is the first song of yours that I listened to. Its a cool sound that you came up with. I particularly like the sound of the acoustic guitars on the intro. The chord progression and changes are original which is nice.

In regards to all the guitar parts. Andy Sommers of the Police used to use a lot of guitar tracks in the studio. "Live" and "studio" are two completely different animals. Its great that you can experiment like this without having to pay $100/hour, because we have our own studios! The only downside with 6-8 guitar tracks is managing them in the mixing stage.

I'm delighted you stopped by to listen. Glad you enjoyed the song. The change from the verse to the bridge is kind of abrupt, and I experimented with some more conventional changes for a while before deciding that this was what sounded best to my ears so I stuck with it! Glad you liked it. As for the mixing, I couldn't agree more. It's so hard to get that many tracks mixed so they're "there" but not taking away from everything else that's going on. I hope you think I got the balance right. Thanks for listening and commenting. I'll be by to check out your stuff soon. Cheers. Peace.

another fav &mdash 02/17/08 - 11:39:01 PM
You have a sound that I really like, not exceedingly edgy but never old school either, somewhere in a middle ground where the Beatles generation and the contemporary pop generation can meet. It is both gently rocking and at the same time soothing. Your voice is mellow and clear and your lyrics leaves the song open for interpretation, deep and poetic but not overly enigmatic. Your instrumentals make me so envious of your all-around musical skills. I'm a mainstream-but-a-little-off-center kind of musician, and this song still hits my musical vein right on target.

Glad you enjoyed it. That guitar sound took a while to achieve. I tend to end up with guitar that sounds "boomy"(I think part of the problem may be how I record guitar...) and because the guitar leads the song off, I really needed it to have crispness and definition. iTunes Ready Baby! &mdash 02/21/08 - 12:49:30 PM
Pros: Very Professional sounding dajama! Great Vocals (lead/backing) and mixed (good reverberation) and good Lyrics; this piece is commercial label material (IMO). A well developed/structured piece (Intro->verses->chorus->verse->bridge/sol-verses->chorus->fade-out solo->Ending). A great full-bodied/soundbox sound you captured off your acoustic; has a soft-clean tone like nylon strings and a sharp-crisp sound using metal strings, in all actuality, acoustic guitar recording is so clean, I can hear your pick hit the strings. Your electric lead has a nice dirty-clean (term I use) sound. Drums work well. All tracks (acoustic/electric, keyboard/synth bass & drums) are mixed (gain levels, panned, effects) all well. Instrumental performance is excellent, tight rhythm section to boot!

Cons:

Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to listen and comment in so much detail. I'm flattered by your comments! Glad you liked the structure. I'm a fan of lots of different types of music - including a lot of ambient, free-ranging stuff - but when I write, I seem to tend towards certain structures. Knowing this, I try to make a point of altering the way I arrange songs - almost willfully. This one, however, has a very straightforward arrangement, and I just felt that it worked, so here it stands. As for the recording, I am not really knowledgeable when it comes to recording - there's a lot of hit and miss involved! - and I'm glad you liked the sound I ended up getting.

Thanks again for checking this one out. I'll be by to listen to your stuff soon. Cheers. Peace.

The whole thing is fine music
the vocals just melt together with such ease.
Your acoustic strumming gives such a bright crisp movement to the belly of this minor chord sound
again i love this chorus
implying the last rhyme/genius
All the lyrics are very hip
all the details/perfect
nice guitar solos
a winner for sure would vote 10's if i could

This is just such a well-realized song, David, in every way. I can tell that you really thought about what you were doing with the arrangement and the songwriting and the production (LOVE those drums) and there's a tremendous professional solidity to the whole thing.

I really, really enjoyed it when the full instrumentation came in with the first chorus. I'm a sucker for that
