Description:
This is a re-do of a song I posted here a little over a year ago. I've been playing it on the acoustic in the key of F instead of the original drop D. It's pretty basic when it comes to a progression so I played it with an electric guitar added a little piano, banjo and pedal steel to finish it off.
A special thanks to my brother Rocha Malhada and mikey_d for helping me tweak the mix.

Wow! Great guitar! &mdash 02/15/08 - 10:02:16 PM
Man, you've got chops! This is just a groovy rock gem. Great guitar sounds, and terrific playing. The banjo is a stroke of genius - it becomes hard to imagine the song without it, the true sign, I think, of a great instrument choice! I like the lyrics, and your vocal performance is sweet - your voice has style, dude. Nicely done. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks for your kind comments &mdash 02/15/08 - 10:25:14 PM
This is a little progression I like to play on my acoustic. I have to admit I drop the top string even though it doesn't need to be and capo the guitar to the Key of F. It's much easier for me to sing it there. I was originally going to do this as my first mic'd acoustic piece but as usual I get carried away. [ Reply to This ]
key of F ? &mdash 02/15/08 - 10:03:33 PM
That's just not right for guitars.
Sounds great! the added instruments fit in and sound like the perfect blend to the tune [ Reply to This ]

Is using a Capo cheating? &mdash 02/15/08 - 10:13:42 PM
Funny you should mention that... &mdash 02/16/08 - 03:00:54 PM
There are still people in this world who think capos are cheating. I LOVE capos...
And once I opened my figurative mouth above, I also realized that I'm actually working at my customary slow pace on a collaboration that IS in F... and I'm doing it by using a capo... All these keys that keyboard players love... F...Eb...Bb...

What about the drums &mdash 02/15/08 - 10:08:01 PM
Absolutely killer guitar- I don't know that you've sounded better. Let's face it, not a lot of rock songs feature banjo (WE NEED MORE BANJO) but you sooo make it work!
Cool lyrics and song... nice southern rock feel (banjo instead of flute aka Marshall Tucker).
John, this rocks!! [ Reply to This ]
ah Adam &mdash 02/15/08 - 10:29:40 PM
your so kind. Thanks for the encouragement. The banjo and piano was easily cheated, the difficult part was the pedal steel which I tried to key but to no avail. I ended chopping up some jam pack loops that came with Logic Studio. I hate when I have to resort to that. [ Reply to This ]
Sorry about the double post up there... &mdash 02/15/08 - 10:12:45 PM
...but when I submitted the little comment above, it went to a screen that said 'this song does not exist'. I felt like I'd gone into the Twilight Zone of song commenting...
Please don't take this wrong when I say that there's an exuberant sloppiness to some of the unwinding licks on this that's really infectious and life-filled. It draws the ear back to the tune for re-listens...

Hey KC &mdash 02/16/08 - 10:20:47 AM
Wow.. &mdash 02/16/08 - 07:30:19 AM
.. loved that quirky combo of the banjo and hot, hot lead licks .. does show that Seahorses (John Squire) 'love is the law' influence/styling .. but I love that too :o)...
but this has so much more... and glad to hear the vocals
prominent in the mix .. your vocal suits the song to a T.. and are well sung. Definitely a better mix John...
always good to call in some extra ears... paid off.

for the listen. I'm glad you like the mix... I really think the extra sets of ears made a difference. Next time I'll have to be a bit more patient and ask for help. As always it's a pleasure to read your comments and thanks for the vocal encouragement.

Hey brother &mdash 02/16/08 - 10:16:34 AM
I set the vocals back in the mix a bit by adding more effect and lowering the level as you suggested... in fact Mike mentioned the same thing, Mike also pointed out when the vox came in on the first verse the first phrase was too loud so I changed the gain as well. Mike also mentioned the rhythm guitar sounded a bit distant so I dried up the guitars, brought up the piano, banjo, vocals and pedal steel at the end. And of course the file size is a bit larger than what I had sent you earlier. Yeah... I'm pretty sick of hearing this song now. *L* Thanks for all your help. [ Reply to This ]
terrific &mdash 02/16/08 - 10:16:09 AM
great harmonies and the inter-play of guitar/keyboards/banjo is so flippin' cool!
Awesome, totally.

nice job thruout....my only nit is the bass tone...it's a little cloudy...I would add a bit more mids to the bass track.
excellent track tex!

Gretsch Electromatic that my wife bought me last year. I'm running it through a firepod, using a tweaked Logic Studio amp emulation on the rhythm and using my noisy Guitar Rig 2 on the lead. I have to admit I capo'd the 3rd fret since I had a hard time singing it in the Key of D on the previous version. You know I should have pulled my old bass out and ran a pass, instead I created a midi track. Maybe on version 3. Thanks for taking a listen, it's always a pleasure to read your comments. Great TF tune... &mdash 02/16/08 - 01:16:19 PM
Wow.... what fantastic electric guitar in this song... really is so rocking fine. Dang, John... you got them chops in full gear here. Total fan of this one. This has shades of Allman Bros for me... which is high praise in my book.
Picking up the pieces and putting them all together... you have!

Thanks for pointing out &mdash 02/17/08 - 02:40:26 PM
the pedal steel. I really wish they had an instrument in Logic Pro that emulated one better. Even though there was an option in the Sculpture plug-in, I fooled around with it without success. I ended up chopping some Jam Pack loops. Always a pleasure to read your comments.

Had to re-comment on how much I DIG this tune. Great tone. You get the "Steve" reference, we've talked about that before. You've pumped up the vox presence, too, seems to me. Great mix either way. [ Reply to This ]
