Keywords:
come on baby (1)
Description:
This is a tune I've been working on with the band Wonderpus. The lyrics are by Volcanique - who plays drums and sings in the band. This version is just me with some Drums on Demand loops and the rest is played on guitar, bass and midi keyboard.

Lyrics:
another nail in my coffin
another foot in the grave
come on baby hold me harder
help me, I'm trying to behave

petrified paintbrush
bottle of wine
memories of you
frozen in time

black truth, half truth
only truth - I'm going away
what will it mean tomorrow
only time can say

petrified paintbrush
bottle of wine
memories of you
frozen in time

- David Wald 2008

Hey Vic - thanks &mdash 02/17/08 - 08:06:55 AM
there will be a Wonderpus live version soon enough. Our lead guitarist is out for a while so we're doing more writing than recording.

Great druggy/draggy feel to this, kinda psychedelic, with aching vocals. Your drums always sound great.

Pertrified paintbrush! Ace line!

Druggy/draggy - for sure &mdash 02/17/08 - 08:12:41 AM
I was sick yesterday when I did this. Shoulda been napping but I had free time with no kids around - and I can't pass up the chance to record. This happened in a couple of hours - I hear a lot of things I might have done different. Thanks for the drums compliment - thank DOD and reverb.

cool song &mdash 02/17/08 - 03:38:53 AM
with a certain real 70s feel in my opinion...really good vox and great percussion. All the ingredients for a great song. congrats.

THE PIC &mdash 02/17/08 - 06:10:14 AM
I glad I didn't hit this one on Saturday night or I would thought I had one too many. Anyway I really liked this one. Reminds me of a modern Buffalo Springfield thing, if you know what I mean.
Dave

Hey Dave &mdash 02/17/08 - 08:18:28 AM
I hear the Buffalo now that you mention it. It's the Stills jazzy lead tone in the instrumental break against Neils country jangle. Good ears - and I appreciate the comparison. The other day I heard Expecting To Fly and it blew me away. Maybe I'll do an orchestral intro for this.

Nice of you to stop by &mdash 02/17/08 - 08:22:38 AM
I doubled my vox and then transformed one of the tracks to female to make three in the verse - but only two in the chorus. Then I mixed them down to one in iTunes and brought it back in - separating the verse from the chorus on different tracks with different delays and effects. About the photo - here's lookin' at ya.

dang, my glasses &mdash 02/17/08 - 04:33:33 PM
real nice tune. The graphic really threw me, I fav'd the song just for that - LOL

nice guitars with a great steady beat and interplay, the vox works really well on this keeper. The mix is a notable thing too, Bud.

Thanks Harold &mdash 02/17/08 - 08:20:54 PM
I find the vox right on the edge of acceptability - but it was the best I could do at the time.

Great tune &mdash 02/18/08 - 08:19:42 AM
Loved the lyrics and music you put it to.
Only criticism I have would be to bring the voice out more and with a little less echo or reverb. Perhaps balance the guitars a bit more in the mix.

But all and all, I really liked this tune. Terrific.

I appreciate the comments &mdash 02/19/08 - 08:36:20 PM
the vocals are bit buried. Glad you stop by.

good one &mdash 02/18/08 - 11:18:33 AM
i really like how all the instruments compliment eachother in this and the chorus progression is very cool. Great mix.

[ Reply to This ]
Originally the chorus progression &mdash 02/19/08 - 08:41:33 PM
was the verse - but when the chorus wasn't working we just switched them around. Sometimes the simplest thing is the best. Thanks for dropping by.

Wonderpus should have a live version &mdash 02/19/08 - 08:46:35 PM
of this recorded soon. Dave (Volcanique) is sharing drum duties with our new member Paola - he actually sings this with the band.

definite &mdash 02/18/08 - 10:02:10 PM
Camper Van Beethoven vibe, esp with that violin keyboard line. Nice backup vox, too (I think. They're so fragile, it might just be an aural hallucination on my part).
Good song.

Alright - I love CVB &mdash 02/19/08 - 08:48:20 PM
nice comment. The backups are part transformer part flashback.

so &mdash 02/20/08 - 01:07:02 PM
i've been sick for a week now, and i just stumbled across this one. what a great psych/pop song. i love that part in the background that almost sounds like it would be a farfisa organ part, but you played it on something else. And the vox are perfect (not just passable), anything else would noy have had the same effect. great song Kevin.

Hope you're feeling better &mdash 02/20/08 - 01:40:54 PM
I've been in the same boat. Recorded this while trying to recuperate - but I can never sit still - hence the effected vocals - I had no voice at the time. That said - real glad you liked it. The farfisa is a couple of string tracks doubled on midi keys - some pizzicato.

[ Reply to This ]
I really &mdash 02/22/08 - 04:57:58 PM
that keyboard line and the dragging vocals fit the overall psych-style.

After I... &mdash 02/23/08 - 11:32:06 PM
...adjusted my eyesight !!! I started to listen intently. You have such great control over all the elements in your work, Bud, and this tune is no exception. It is eminently satisfying from the standpoint of structure and instrumentation. The lyrics make the listener think...Ouch. A sad lyric, but honest... The tune just sort of cuts off at the very end...I was waiting for a conclusion. Left me wanting one...or a fade ... or something a bit more. ... finished. That's just my take on it. Maybe you wanted to leave the thoughts up in the air. That'd be cool, too.
Peace.
Paul

Thanks for your thoughtful (as always) &mdash 02/26/08 - 09:57:36 AM
comments. The lyrics are by my bandmate David Wald - and I really enjoyed working with them. As far as the ending goes - I made it abrupt to reflect the last line "frozen in time"
