Lyrics
THE YEARS I WAS A COWBOY
there’s a river
I didn’t throw myself into;
there’s a pistol
that I didn’t use,
but as it moved past my eyes
to kiss my forehead
its barrel was
the colour of a bruise.
there are pills
that rattle in my pocket
like a ghostly drummer
with drumsticks of bone;
a dozen
and I’m sure I’d dance forever —
two or three
just seem to keep me stoned.
there’s a bottle
that is shaped just like a woman;
there’s a woman
that I need just like a drink;
at noon the sun
rips over my horizon,
and I’m reaching
before there’s even time to think.
and that’s all I can remember
of the years I was a cowboy;
that’s all I can remember
of those years
there’s a river
I didn’t throw myself into;
there’s a pistol
that I didn’t use,
but as it moved past my eyes
to kiss my forehead
its barrel was
the colour of a bruise.
there are pills
that rattle in my pocket
like a ghostly drummer
with drumsticks of bone;
a dozen
and I’m sure I’d dance forever —
two or three
just seem to keep me stoned.
there’s a bottle
that is shaped just like a woman;
there’s a woman
that I need just like a drink;
at noon the sun
rips over my horizon,
and I’m reaching
before there’s even time to think.
and that’s all I can remember
of the years I was a cowboy;
that’s all I can remember
of those years
