Mystified (143)sbc (53)hymn (11)traditional (65)abide (1)faith (37)
Description:
This traditional hymn was written by Henry F. Lyte in 1847, the music set to William Henry Monk's melody of "Eventide," from 1861.

There are 8 verses to the original text; this a cappella version includes three of those verses.

It's one of those spur-of-the-moment kinds of things where I decided to see what would happen if I recorded something familiar in my own style.
I'm not looking for critiques (I know it's far from perfect...just like me ;) as much as I just wanted to share it with those who cared to listen...

Lyrics:
Abide with Me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

lyrics by Henry Francis Lyte

I am so happy that you did this and posted it. I grew up in little southern country churches with my dad being a preacher. This was one of the standard hymns at each church every sunday, so this instantly took me
back to some wonderful memories. I love the moving harmonies and your performance of this old hymn.

thank you so much

Absolutely beautiful Cat! This is a beautiful hymn, but you made it special. I found myself worshipping our Lord and Savior while listening. Thank you so much for this.

God bless,

Blimey &mdash 02/17/08 - 09:14:08 AM
This is just the kind of thing I love to do, as you know. :) There's nothing like a totally stripped down performance to reach in and grab the listener by the guts.

This also happens to be my favourite hymn (although I admit I'm not a huge fan of hymns generally) ... it has such a heart-rendingly bleak and beautiful melody. It's like the silhouette of a bare winter tree against the twilight.

You really show here how the voice on its own is sometimes more powerful than any amount of instrumentation.

SO beautiful &mdash 02/17/08 - 01:26:52 PM
I was mezmerized listening to this. It took me back also, and I love the simplicity of the voices, but then how they build together in this gorgeous complex way. Thanks!

A beautiful Hymn &mdash 02/17/08 - 01:59:17 PM
and beautifully sung. Just goes to show what vocal harmony can add... I just love the human voice in harmony, regards M

ethereal &mdash 02/17/08 - 09:44:39 PM
This wonderful rendition floated my head right up to the clouds.

I especially love the faraway voice in the background which makes its entrance in the last part of the song.

I like the way you started with a solo voice, then gradually added harmonies.

Lovely, Cat -- simply lovely!!

You have such a wonderful voice Cat - sorry, make that "voices" (the harmony just came in).
Simple and lovely,
Thanks,

traditional? &mdash 02/17/08 - 11:00:49 PM
I think Christian would be a little more accurate. It always amazes me the power that comes from this sacrifice. That death transition is all through life. It haunts us every minute. We lose ourselves sometimes in distractions, but that haunting makes everything on earth a little sweeter.

voice is supposed to me the purest instrument. I have noticed that without voice we are not drawn into the presence so much. when voice occurs we seem to fixate on that and listen more intently.

we went to hear our first symphony in a long time, last night. It was georgeous! but my mind did drift and fantisize. with your voice however i just comfortably drifted with the sentiments.

Traditional... &mdash 02/17/08 - 11:20:55 PM
...in the sense that there are different musical settings (or have been) to this hymn and this is the traditional arrangement.
The genre would of course be "Religious" or "Christian" if one chose such, but I chose a cappella because that also defines the nature of the treatment of this hymn.
It in nowise downplays the message nor the meaning of the song.

beautiful &mdash 02/19/08 - 08:24:04 PM
first off, the hymn itself is wonderful, but second: i just can't believe how nice your voice sounds. did you record this acapella or did you have something to help you stay so pitch perfect? god i wish i could sing :) just amazing.

[ Reply to This ]
thanks, michael :) &mdash 02/19/08 - 10:50:08 PM
I appreciate your comments here.

I did record this a cappella. This was the second or third take--I raised it half a step because I was having a hard time with the original pitch I'd chosen. Funny how that is!
For some reason, this second pitch choice seemed to 'settle' better with my voice than the first. I also find that when my voice is 'warmed up' I do better at staying to pitch.
...some days are better than others!

Thanks again for stopping by and leaving a comment. :)
