Description:
Another try at orchestrating to one of my piano compositions. If you stick it out, it goes BIG. I think I might be addicted to timpani and tubular bells, and probably need to start going to TTBA meetings.

missed this :-) otherwise he surely would have mentioned it in his recent forum thread. After listening I may now have to attend the TTBA meetings as well. Wonderfully crafted and performed.

grand &mdash 02/17/08 - 02:45:14 PM
Really nice musical concept here. The chord progressions and orchestration are very pleasing.

A couple of suggestions:

The level of the strings is a bit high; try taking them down a little. They tend to overpower the other instruments, which is easy to do because they're a sustained sound.

You might try varying the overall "texture" of this piece, which is leaning towards being thick.

Every piece of music has a beginning, middle and end, with its own "pacing". On this one, you brought the sounds up to a climax relatively soon, and then it sustained for the rest of the piece. It had nowhere to go from there.

Perhaps build things up more slowly, and shape the piece a little shorter to avoid repetition.

All this being said, I enjoyed listening to this, and am so glad that you're posting here!

Thanks Cameron &mdash 02/17/08 - 07:08:27 PM
Your suggestions are always appreciated. I do have a tendency to throw in everything including the kitchen sink, and go big and stay there way too long. This feedback helps me realize I can do something about that! I really don't know squat about orchestrating or mixing, so these comments help point me in the right direction.

love it! &mdash 02/17/08 - 02:50:30 PM
I really like how this builds. You have worked on the EQ since I heard an early peek, the instruments are now more distinct. Good job of panning/separation (still more could be done, especially with the brass, which need a little more "richness"). But I love your touches with the organ, the timpani, and the bells, the bells... love them bells! ;-) The only composition critique I have is many of your parts seem to be in lock-step and all stop/switch on the beat... you may want to have one instrument (violins, or trumpets) hold their note across the barline in a couple of spots to make this a little more fluid.

Overall, a very grand almost fanfare-ish piece.
ttfn,
Drakonis

Thanks Dragon-man &mdash 02/17/08 - 07:11:07 PM
your recent help with panning and the EQ have already made a difference, though I know I have a long way to go. I see what you mean about "lock step". I look forward to your continued critique as I try to figure out what I'm doing here. (What AM I doing here??)

Dreams of Soaring &mdash 02/17/08 - 03:03:41 PM
I really like how it builds from something full of naivete to a powerful piece of music. That's not easy to do. I tend agree with Cameron about the texture and the string volumes. Agreed too about the pacing. Have you thought of bringing it back down--quiter textures, more soloistic sounds at some point, then rebuild? Another orchestration suggestion--move the piano up and octave or even two octaves at some point toward the end to let it cascade over the soundfield? A lot of the texture happens in the midrange of the rendering--a soaring piano could bring it to a higher point near the end? Perhaps consider using a modulatory device, that often helps to create a new sense of direction.

Lots of suggestions, but I really like the piece. It's grand!

yes, I see the commonality of these comments - I need to learn to be quiet (at least some of the time). It won't surprise any of you to learn that growing up, while playing the piano my mother was constantly saying to me "STOP POUNDING!!"

What a lovely, expansive composition. It just proclaims joy and brightness in every aspect.

I think Cameron has given some good suggestions as far as the strings are concerned, but really...this piece is most enjoyable as it is :)

some of the suggestions here seem really good, but I like the peace and the piece a whole lot just the way it is.

I think you are really lucky to have such positive and constructive comments on your songs because it means that the commentators believe that your talent warrants their time to listen closely and comment thoughtfully.

A smashing piece of music...... &mdash 02/18/08 - 12:35:20 PM
This is another piece of excellent classical music.

You are building your skills and things are moving along nicely, from my point of view.

I would still say concentrate most of the time on 'getting things down' and recorded. The correct sounds and dynamics can come in later days. This piece was very effective and I always listen to the music before I think about production.

You have a beautiful style and sound.

Take care.

Paul

just carries one along as though drifting on a cloud. Lovely and calming with those lovely orchestrations. Those timpanis do have a nice lush sound don't they LOL Oh! And I just heard why you like the tubular bells too. This really did come together in a big way. Beautiful, regards M

nicest recent additions to MJ.

I've really enjoyed every piece that you have uploaded. Was wondering when you are going to be uploading another one. Great pic, such a nice image for this fine tune.

If there was made a country type movie or tv show, what a terrific theme sound this would be.

Thanks for sharing

Welcome to MacJams &mdash 02/20/08 - 04:19:33 AM
You play beautifully and have a great ear for combining different sounds. This is really quality stuff. If I'd been mixing it (i.e. this is entirely a subjective point) I'd have brought the piano a little higher so that it gently dominates the other instruments. But this is a really fine piece of work with a grand swelling sound. Kudos!

Im rather new (in fact totally new) in trying to express what I hear in music. But I have been reading comments here and there on MacJams so I see that I have to try it!
This is so beautiful!!!
I imagine myself (often Im very full of stress...) just lying in the air, floating around with the music...feels like healing to body and soul :-).
Soft, easy uplifting, going to more power and strength...
I would like a whole record with this kind of music! The cdplayer would run all day long!
A clear favorite!!!
Thanks again!

I'm listening again to this one because, as for the finest classical music, you can never taste it with only a quick listening.
As I already told you I'm a Strawisky's fan and this piece is really close to my preferred classical stuff.

Thank you very much!

Addictions &mdash 02/22/08 - 01:32:00 PM
I think some addictions aren't meant to be fixed, especially when they result in such happy music. My seven-year-old daughter was listening and said this sounded like a happy flying song and I tend to agree with her.

I think Cameron gave you some really good feedback, as he always does. I think that holding back on the build might give it more impact. I do like the scale that you work in, though. There's something incongrous in your avatar that radiates peace and gentleness and these great big pieces of music like this and your Choral Stomp that I find really cool and interesting.

Really nice &mdash 02/23/08 - 06:18:37 PM
And, yes I'd agree with almost everything stated here to tweak it into an even better arrangement. I'd personally love to hear that piano brought out a bit more.
I personally have an addiction to the Chinese gong. Just like 'real' drugs, the more you use it, the less effective it becomes at eliciting the 'high' you were desiring in the first place. However, I don't hear an overabundance of either tymp or tubular bells here.
