Keywords:
indie rock (28)
Description:
i originally posted this song as a synth-pop number, but here is the fuzz mix. basically an experiment: i just got a set of drums on demand and the line 6 gearbox. it's really hard for me to get a rock song out of garageband, but i'm always trying. picture this:it's the early 90's, you went to Lollapalooza with the guys from work and there is some indie band playing that you've never heard before, but you've had a few beers and your into it; but by time you get home you forgot who they were. too bad; they played some small club the next night.

heres the link to the synth pop version:

Lyrics:
with the light comes a weight
every day has it's place
i'm old enough to know

it's alright it's okay
i'm just fine
go away, get away from me

(chorus)
and you
with nothing else to do
but just get high
and talk
and toss away the hours as they go by

ah ha ha
ah ha ha

in my mind there's a place
it's my heart i can't face sometimes
it's really no big deal
every day every night
every time i'm not right
at least there's always you

(chorus)
and me
we lie between the sheets
and we believe
in life
we toss and turn away
the whole damn night

ah ha ha
ah ha ha
ah ha ha
ah ha ha

with the light comes a weight
every day has it's place
i'm old enough to know

it's alright it's okay
i'm just fine
go away, get away from me

(chorus)
and you
with nothing else to do
but just get high
and talk
and toss away the hours as they go by
with me
we lie between the sheets
and we believe
in life
we toss and turn away
the whole damn night

with you
with you...

Hey - I was at that show! &mdash 02/21/08 - 03:49:09 PM
It was awesome - the band was from New Zealand and they were named after some marsupial I think. Or were they the Jimcrackers? Really hot - totally into their sound - solid drums and soaring guitars - lotsa high freq stuff to spin your brain.
So you got that line 6 happening - cool.

we must &mdash 02/21/08 - 03:53:40 PM
have missed each other at that show. they were Kiwis and named after a marsupial yes; but oddly enough it was an american marsupial: the Possum. were they the electric possum death squad? can't remember. i was in line for the outhouse most of their set.

yeah, got it working. thanks so much for the walk through last night. went off without a hitch.

davevan. this was how i originally meant it to be, but was too lazy to do it, thus the synth pop version. i'm still trying to perfect the art of getting a decent fuzz-pop sound from GB (it's hard without having real drums, guitar amps and singing hard enough to be heard over the band). thanks so much for listening.

great melodic tuneage as always &mdash 02/21/08 - 04:10:43 PM
love the sliding guitar squirrelishness, great sung harmonies... repost the lyrics... your voice gets a little more lost in this mix with the pounding guitars and bass.

i'll put the lyrics up. i tried to mix the vox into the song so that I would have more of the shoegazer vibe. i was actually thinking that they were too loud, but they seem to fit in okay while i listen at work. thanks so much for listening (and just for being you).

This sounds &mdash 02/21/08 - 04:41:47 PM
great! What setting are you using on the toneport?I can't seem to get a distortion sound out of it that doesn't sound kind of fake. You are a true craftsman-this is really good.

thanks &mdash 02/21/08 - 04:58:14 PM
thanks for coming by. i think these sound pretty fake too, but i was going for a fuzz pedal vibe (ala the rat and a big muff).i used a few different amps on the toneport. the clean gtr was the new wave sound, and the others were some sort of british amp model that i tweaked the knobs on. have you ever tried downloading any of the presets that people have put together that are floating around the web?

like it &mdash 02/21/08 - 05:18:16 PM
nice song. i really like what the guitar's doing in the left channel. at first the sound of this reminded me of earlier U2, but you definitely have your own thing going on with this one. well done!

hey thanks &mdash 02/21/08 - 05:30:37 PM
a lot. glad you like. i just realized that I completely forgot to put another guitar track in the mix. it was doing really echoey stabs. oh well. really glad you liked the guitars, i just basically made a bunch of noise on the fly and then mixed it all down. i guess i pretty much rely on happy accidents. thanks again for giving this a listen.

Hot Damn! &mdash 02/21/08 - 06:25:03 PM
This sounds great. I love all the sound noisy effecty guitars/synths(?) with the panning - sounds kick ass in headphones. Great song. And happy birthday Michael. I've some stuff I want you to hear, I'll email it.

hey Mark &mdash 02/21/08 - 06:33:41 PM
good to hear from you. i thought of you when i posted this one. glad you approve. it's all guitars on this one, no synths and no panning effects. sometimes the parts of the different guitars cross over and they sound like a panned delay effect (wish i could figure out how to do that). can't wait to hear your new stuff. you got my number.

When you mentioned on the first posting about more fuzzed guitars and drums i had already imagined how it would sound. Excellent I score an A there. I got a real kick though, from the slide effect of sawing and swaying with the delay. Gives a cool feedback effect. So you get an A there.

Good job on turning it around Michael!

this was fun, got to try out some new toys and used a couple different tunings (drop D, regular and the slide was done with 3 strings tuned to B). sometimes i miss playing loud noise in a band, this was good therapy for me. thanks for listening.

avatar, young man. I love this - very 90's indie, JaMC type song, but this has a real sense of motion and lovely guitar - I love the whining distorted guitar panned to the left.

Dreamy fuzzy wuzzy

this was pretty easy for me (it's my first instinct to write noise pop songs like this), but i had lots of fun. loves me some noisey guitar. thanks for listening.

that you have really managed to hit a live band sound and a band that are relaxed with and enjoying their music. Impressive.

I don't think I'm allowed to just type f*ck me! as a comment, though that's really what I want to do.

What a mix and great conception of this song. You're a scary boy, Michael, you're just made of all this music and it all keeps coming out and it's in all these different genres and you're so great with them all.

I'm very excited to hear you got some DOD and you did a great job getting a rock song out of GarageBand. What do you see as the special challenges?

[ Reply to This ]
thanks Lisa &mdash 02/22/08 - 07:03:35 PM
glad you liked. i should have had you sing some on this one too.

i find it hard to record a convincing rock song with GB just because of the drum thing (hard to get sloppy overplayed drums with loops), i also have a hard time getting good guitar and bass sounds and sometimes it's more difficult to dredge up the vibe for really convincing vox if i don;t have to work to be heard over the band(at least for me it's easier on the quieter stuff). i try to record as if i'm playing live (only allow myself 1 take per track usually) and i don't worry about tuning and stuff like that too much; i hope that the mistakes will make it sound more real. thanks so much for listening. when;s our next collab (we've done 2 now)?

For sloppy drums, I'd really like to hear what you could do with BFD.

Next Collab &mdash 02/22/08 - 07:28:30 PM
I'd like to do another one sometime, for sure. Maybe this time we should actually work together on it, instead of scurrying off into corners with each other's music and jumping out with a big surprise. That could be fun. Although, you're totally in charge of making the music. ;-)

P.S. A major is the best key in the whole world.

definitely from cali (i love it here). i think it's the sloppiness of everything that gives it that eras vibe (that crappy bass sound could be on any sonic youth record). i wish i could get a realistic SVT bass sound. thanks for stopping by man.

Classy rock &mdash 02/24/08 - 09:26:39 PM
What a great groove this gets into (fairly early on too) - love the chorus especially.

At first, the fuzz was a little beyond what I enjoy, but once you started to sing all became clear. Nit-wise, I'd probably like a little more clarity at the upper end of the EQ curve, but I always say that :)

Excellent post Michael.
