Description:
michael2 posted this funkalicious piece of music here, a month or so back and I fell in LOVE with it instantly. The song was written in less than an hour and recorded in a couple of shorter-than-usual-for-me sessions, but I had houseguests and haven't had time to post it until now.

As Michael said in his original posting of the song (under the same title, which I completely ripped off from him) the bass line is a bit of a porno bass. I drew inspiration from it, but instead of writing one kind of F.U. song, I wrote another.

I did have to change the bass instrument sound from his original Motown Bass, since I didn't have it on this computer and something wacky happened in the translation of his AlphaSynth track on my computer. For some reason, it makes different sounds in Seattle...

This was a really fun one for me and big thanks to Michael for letting me play with his music. I'm not really this kind of singer, but I did the best I could with the pipes I have and had fun doing something different.

Blaky Smith did another version posted here, from which I'll bet some of you will recognize this music. It might be fun to check his out, too, or maybe even do one of your own. :-)

Lyrics:
Keep your stormy Monday.
I don't want your rainy days.
You never knew I was there.

Carry your umbrella
all you thought I was good for,
you never knew I was there.

But, oh, what will you do,
when you need someone to hold you?
I'm here to tell you you, baby,
find someone else's shoulder to cry on
(what will you do) (it won't be mine) (what will you do)

The sky's gone and cleared up now
without you in my life, boy.
Hardly remember you were there.

You wasted my time
said if I waited you'd be mine
but you never, never, never knew I was there

But, oh, what will you do,
when you need someone to hold you?
I'm here to tell you you, baby,
find someone else's shoulder to cry on.

Was an old man
lived in the woods
found a young girl
thought she looked good
took her inside
showed her the world
promised her diamonds
then downgraded to pearls
she got wise
ran far away
now he's alone
and that's how he'll stay

Keep your stormy Monday.
I don't want your rainy days.
You never knew I was there.

I didn't hear the original track... &mdash 02/21/08 - 08:02:24 PM
...so I'm hitting this one fresh...

Lisa, your singing has always been neat, but your singing keeps getting better, and your recording of your own voice is amazingly great... Your double-tracking of bits with occasional harmony notes is tight and excellent... Great clarity and fullness in those vocal tracks...

This also doesn't sound like words-and-vocals-dropped-onto-someone's-backing-tracks. This sounds like you and Michael were in the same room... there's great interplay and even the sounds seem as if they're all tied together in the same sonic space... It all FITS...

I love the bass line against first the piano and then the B3ish tone... And the nicely stereo spread drums...

So yeah, I like the song. AND I got firsties... My evening is complete...

Ed

Thanks, Ed &mdash 02/23/08 - 04:38:22 PM
I'm glad you think it sounds like it's all in the same space, so to speak. That was actually hard for me to pull off this time, because this was my first mix on monitors and I was stubborn and was determined that I was going to do as much as humanly possible with them and only go to the headphones for the final mastering. It did work out in the end, but it was a pain in the butt-ox.

Your firsties crack me up!

And here, with Michael2's bed, you sound so (I know I always say this) more confident than ever. The turns of phrase, the witty lines (especially in the psuedo-rap/spoken word part, all combine for an excellent song.

this is slinky and sultry... smokey.... steamy... ect. and still... you sing this with a sort of innosence, it's a great contrast... and makes you seem dangerous, lethal... like a potential sniper bubbling just under the surface... a wonderful bit of theatre... the best singer are actors...

and I agree with Ed, you are growing in this craft/art.... excellent work here Lisa

I haven't been around much lately, but your still one of my fav people in the world... and there are 6,000,000,000 people in the world... think about that!!!

I think that innocence thing is the girly thing in my voice that ever plagues me. I swear I felt so tough when I was singing this and then on playback, there she was, yet again, little Miss Girlypants Relaxenheimer. I'm glad it works for you Scott, because you're one of my favorite people, too. :-)

For some reason (or logic) the sound sounds bigger and bolder than M2's original. Nice lyrics and cool vocal style. It'd be cool to hear you and blacky do a collab with him doing some spoken word on the bridge. But I like it a lot the way it is. Regards

B &mdash 02/25/08 - 01:07:13 PM
I probably worked more on the mixing and mastering of this than the writing and singing, so I'm happy to hear it paid off, I was really going for a big sound.

I'd love to do something with Blaky on this. I've been wondering how it would work with my lyrics being a kiss-off, but I know that michael could get it to work, if anyone can.

.. you're back form the dead, or where ever you've been . Not sure you've done slinky before (the style, not the springy toy) but this really suits you - nice tempo, and loads of space for the vocal. And we have the same mic - wow!

Just nice to have something new, and this is really classy.

Slinky Virgin &mdash 02/26/08 - 07:12:59 PM
You know, I had to think about this for a little while, which means I've done enough songs to confuse myself finally. I think I've got a couple of projects over at perceptualvortex's page that might qualify in the slinky genre. There's a meow in Steve and Frances that caused some male enthusiasm when it was first posted, but it has been a very long time since slinky has reared its head around these parts for me.

So relieved you liked downgraded to pearls. It's so funny that you often single out the line that I am concerned is a reach. That one almost got rewritten. Blame laziness for its survival. :-)

is a definite fit for your vocal style. i liked the word interplay, although, at times it seemed a little rushed in places. overall, very nice recording and i think it is great when you can get your vocals to match someone else's mix. it is not an easy thing to do. very nice post.

Thanks for the constructive criticism, Allen. It really does help and if you swing back by, I'd even be grateful if you'd single out the spots for me, so I can look at them again if I ever re-record this. As, I mentioned down below to Alan, I had a different spot in mind to him, so I wonder what you're thinking, too.

Thanks a million!

I'm achin' to have play my guitar behind those silken tones one day. Until then, I'll just have to "find someone else's shoulder to cry on." classy &mdash 02/22/08 - 10:25:44 AM
Classy, moody, but with dignity held.

Dug the minor groove which went with the stormy, rainy days escaped from. Nice touch with the piano and organ in the same tune, it really added to the whole mood along with that steady declining bass line. Nice contrasts.

This is such a great mood piece which would really be complimented with a black and white video of assorted blurred motions in a cemented euro city locale.

Your voice on this one really does it for me.

I like that idea for a video, Damien. I've never made one before...mostly because I can't stand the idea of filming myself and didn't have any other ideas.

I'm so happy to hear you say you like the vocal. I was so uncomfortable with this that I almost chucked the whole project and didn't post it, so it's a relief that people aren't storming the castle with torches and demanding that I remove this travesty of a vocal. Hooray!

Enjoy the slow funky caravan &mdash 02/22/08 - 10:35:43 AM
at the start. Like especially how you sing high, which is great sign good singing of course. Like how you weave your cool style through out the song. Great to hear singing so easy to understand the words to, which is a special talent that need to be done more in radio especially. Like the breaks after the singing. Like the rap you added. The bass and drums really supply a fun funky background throughout.

Thanks for sharing, cool lyrics as well ! Great going the both of you!

So funny, Bill, what you said about cool style, because I'm such a gigantic dork. I'm pleased that you could understand the words and that the rap didn't turn you off. Michael's music is definitely a slow funky caravan and I enjoyed riding it!

Bill &mdash 02/25/08 - 01:31:14 PM
Thank you. The music definitely inspired the lyrics and was the driving force behind the entire song. I feel as though it almost did all the heavy lifting and I was almost channeling something out of the music, actually. So happy you liked it and thanks for mentioning the chorus.

Versatility &mdash 02/25/08 - 01:37:50 PM
That's a good point. I tend to stay where I'm comfortable and, as I said, I almost didn't post this and might not have if I hadn't already told Michael I was doing it, so I'm glad that people think it's okay to have branched out. I'm surprised by how much people like it, but there you go. Thank you so much!

Not too sure I.... &mdash 02/22/08 - 02:35:12 PM
....know what you mean by "no this kind of singer"? I think you could probably turn your hand/vocal chords to most things!

I've mentioned too many previous times which two singers you most remind me of so won't repeat myself here, but this is really up there as far as the construction of a smoky melody goes. There's just something about your voice......la la la....

Another good 'un. Can we have some more now please?

Not this kind of singer &mdash 02/25/08 - 08:03:27 PM
Umm...I meant not very good at singing this kind of music and I really did mean it. I guess I figured I needed a voice with more oomph or something. This one didn't come naturally to me and I'm still not completely happy with the end result, but maybe I'm being my own worst critic. I'm very happy that you guys are enjoying so much.

So happy that you like the 'smoky melody'; I really think Michaels deserves a lot of credit for that because his organ line was really a guide rope for me during a good portion of the song. I went off by myself sometimes, but the organ melody was so strong, I couldn't help but follow it at times.

Thanks, Phil!

Yup .. &mdash 02/22/08 - 02:40:05 PM

.. I was looking for a word to sum up and it's been said already: slinky... is that a cross of sexy, sly and kinky?? ;o)

I've enjoyed "Le trottoir" version as well truth be known .. I do think your vocal delivery here is very fitting to the music's groove ..just echo Allen's remark about some lines being a little crammed (says me .. Krammer vs Krammer :o)) .. that "never, never, never knew" line standing out as a little awkward.

Great take on this with great singing and lyrics Lisa, mix would good too although personally I would have
the drums a little further back and brought the piano forward a bit... that part does alot of 'carrying' and
space creating for me.

Slukinky &mdash 02/22/08 - 03:43:24 PM
I really enjoyed marc's version as well. I was in the middle of mixing on mine when he posted his and was terrified that mine was going to be too much like his and I'd be late, but thankfully, he was very, very original with what he did. I'm still amazed by his lyrics.

Thanks very much for the feedback on the line delivery. The one you mention isn't the one I would have guessed you'd think was rushed (I think "downgraded to pearls" sounds rushed) so I'm glad you singled it out specifically, as it gives me something to think about if I ever wanted to do an album for fun one day and Michael were kind enough to let me use this.

The mix!! I really wrestled with the drums and toyed a bit with bringing the piano more to the forefront. At the end, I decided that the gigantic bottom end of the song was what had attracted me to the music in the first place, so I decided to go ahead and let the drums and bass take the lead, but I do hear what you're saying about the piano and think it's an extremely valid comment. Now I want to go back and try a proper mix that way to hear what it sounds like. Part of the battle for me was getting a good bottom end sound on my monitors that didn't overwhelm me on my headphones. I was trying to walk a really fine line because I loved the bottom and I think that maybe I walked it a little too fine.

Thanks for the feedback (which I typed as 'feetback' three times!) It's really helpful, Alan!

Thanks, Willy. It has been a long time since I've posted anything. I posted a new song with Matt on The Orbiting profile a couple of months ago, but not much really in the last six months. Life has been a bit crazy. My dog ate nails and almost died, required really expensive surgery and still almost didn't live because she had an underlying illness that had made her eat the nails in the first place. Then my basement flooded while I was on vacation for a week, which destroyed the entire room (with water and mildew) and much of what was in it...and it just happened to be my studio...I spent a month cleaning up from that and am still rebuilding the space, literally from the walls up. Last month my car was stolen. This month my furnace died and we've had new ducting being put in for the last few weeks (NOISY!!) I've also had three sets of houseguests in the last two months (with #4 arriving tonight!).

So, crazy life with lots of activities and distractions! Things should hopefully slow down, now, though, and I hope to be here and making music much, much more in the coming months.

This is probably so much more than you wanted to know. :-p

It's so funny that you say that I sound comfortable because I was anything but. I did rehearse, though, because I was so out of my comfort zone, so maybe that's why it comes across that way, but trust me, I was quaking in my boots!
