Description:
My band, the Ex-Kings, broke up today so I thought I'd throw up one of our songs. As recorded it's called "Waiting on American Girls" but it was performed as "Wasted on American Girls" about a week or two after it was recorded. "Wasted" just makes more sense. I like this song, but I'm not satisfied with how it turned out. I wanted it to be more piano heavy with acoustic guitars (think Rubber Soul). But it didn't end up that way. It's not bad, but it could be a lot better. Perhaps one day I will record it the way I wanted it to sound.

Keith Walker - drums and other percussion, Mike Bassett - Lead guitar, Gary Lairson - Bass, Patrick something-or-other engineering and mix.

Lyrics:
Waiting on American Girls © 2007

So you think that you're the chosen one
Something like a phenomenon.
Well I've got some news for you girl, ooh girl.
You're always playing hard to get
But the Devil, he don't forget
And he's got designs on you girl, ooh girl.
I'm waiting on American girls

So you think you're never gonna die
And you're obsessed with always being right
Well I'll tell you where you got it wrong girl, ooh girl
Moving faster than a bullet train
With the fury of a hurricane
And you won't be smiling for long girl.
I'm waiting on American girls.

So you think you've got me figured out now.
Well we'll see who's got who figured out now.

I'm waiting on American girls.

Hardware:
Pearl something or other kit, Rickenbacker 330, Vox AC30, Fender Telecaster, Marshall DFX150, Fender Precision bass, Yamaha keys, I can't remember the gear Patrick had at his place.

Your overall sound is improved a million percent. And another great tune. Nice Harmonies and good energy. Enjoyed it. Sorry about the band. Regards

Thanks for the kind words. I'd like to take credit for the improved sound quality, but I didn't mix this song (see my post titled "Judgement Call!") for my personal dilemma on this very issue. However, I'm glad you liked the tune.

Great songwriting and lyrics!
Totally dig this one!
Has a 70-s feel in a way....

I've never seen it that way, but now that you mention it, it does kind of go more that direction. Thanks for listening!

Good Groove... &mdash 02/22/08 - 08:45:46 AM
and melody line. Vocals are pro-sounding and the instruments compliment them well.

Top notch!

This does have a cool 70's feel to it (which dates me!). I like the vocals, lyrics, and just about everything else. Sorry to hear about your band. I came here because of your "judgement call" post - felt impressed that you even wondered about this. Guess you're a stand up guy! Thanks

stand up guy &mdash 02/22/08 - 10:00:02 AM
haha. I just worry about that kind of stuff. There's a very positive sense of competition with this site (that I sense, at least). When I hear people step it up it makes me want to do better. With that in mind, I don't want to take credit for someone else's success. This is mixed much better than I could do myself and I wouldn't want anyone thinking I pulled that off. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for listening!

It's tough when you are competing against the Devil for a girl : >

Did you write the lyrics?

Nice rhyming of "chosen one/phenomenon." The idea of a "chosen one" also contrasts well with "the Devil."

Love the harmonies!

The devil gets me every time. I did write the lyrics. Incidentally, it's my wife's least favorite lyrical effort to date. She jokes that the song is about her, which is totally untrue. Thanks for listening and the input on the lyrics!

I like what I hear &mdash 02/22/08 - 09:51:31 AM
This is a really good song hear. Reminds me of Weezer a lot, which I dig. Too bad you broke up.

By the way, I'm much more interested in the song than the production (Which is quite good).

The song itself is well-crafted and catchy with the right amount of poppiness to be radio friendly.

I'm really liking what I'm hearing from you. Looking forward to hearing more.

I love Weezer! I was 16 when Pinkerton came out and I'm not sure a record has ever meant more to me than that one.

That's also quite the compliment from your, Lava, so I hope I can live up to the hype!

Turtles sound in a way though your own style. Like those harmonies!

Like how you extend those harmonies.

This has a nice radio feel.

Nice job!
Enjoyed

Turtles &mdash 02/22/08 - 01:41:58 PM
Good call! We would sometimes play the bassline to the Clash's "London Calling" over the first few bars of this much like the same way Me First and the Gimme Gimmes did for their cover of the Turtles' "Elenore". I guess what I'm trying to say is everyone is ripping everyone off :).

Yeah &mdash 02/22/08 - 01:45:59 PM
This would be a great song even if it weren't for the solid production, so I'm glad you let the devil on your shoulder win out (for the record, I think it's completely okay that you posted it; the site is ultimately about sharing music and I'm HAPPY to get a copy of this awesome song for free).

The lyrics are wonderful and you came up with some great rhymes, "bullet train," and "hurricane..." AWESOME. That change in the lyrics from "waiting" to "wasted" is interesting.

Great vocals, you guys were a super-tight band. I'm sorry to hear you broke up.

I'm glad you liked it and I think it's great you have a copy of it now. Record labels are a dinosaur and it's sites like these that offer a glimpse in to the future of music distribution. But I digress.

"Waiting" implied a "I'm waiting on American girls to come around and stop being so mean" but I don't think I effectively communicated that in the verses. I communicated that they can be mean, but I didn't correlate the verses and choruses. "Wasted" ties in to the verses better. ...or at least I thought it made more sense.

Anyway, thanks for the listen!

Agree &mdash 02/22/08 - 07:22:45 PM
I agree with you on the change. I was typing along that I agreed with you then thought I might be insulting the existing lyrics, which are actually just fine, so I left it at "interesting," which I realize now sounds worse, actually. ;-p.

I think wasted is a very cool choice.

sorry &mdash 02/22/08 - 09:16:55 PM
I had just realized that in my song description I never explained WHY "wasted" sounds better. I understood your comment loud and clear. No hard feelings over here!

an ex ex-king &mdash 02/22/08 - 04:12:36 PM
that must be a king, then ?

The opening, indeed, reminded me of London Calling. It was the title that attracted me, "I can lose myself in chinese art and american" being one of my favorite line of my favorite album. But it's a coll song, that really stands on its own.

true. &mdash 02/22/08 - 04:18:39 PM
And if we do a reunion show we'd all be ex-ex-ex-kings. Possibly even xxx-kings for the 18+ crowd (or straight edge kids... or hell, both). Thanks for the compliment!

I might have to change my description. I thought I was channeling 60's pop but it appears I had my decades off. Oh well, thanks for listening. It's always interesting to hear someone else's take!

The opening guitar chords made me think this was gonna go Clash, but yup, there's Beatlism in here. Fine tune as-is, but if you feel you need to redo it, I'll dig that, too.

The other guys didn't walk away pleased with this one. It's not bad, it's just that we weren't very creative in our performance. We did a very linear performance and we'd have liked to make it more interesting. I always hear it as a little softer in my head, but we'll see.

Great little tune. Sorry to hear the band broke up. I could see this working as well or better the rubber soul way also. Hope you get around to it and I'll enjoy the plugged in version until then.

great &mdash 08/19/08 - 06:03:00 PM
i'm really glad i came across your stuff, it's brilliant. This song is infinitely better than alot of the stuff in the charts over here in England (musically this country's gone down the sh**ter) and could REALLY shine if done in a top end studio. But this song has a real tight quality about it which i particularly love. Excellent writing, singing, production and generally playing!

THANKS!

thanks &mdash 08/19/08 - 11:39:26 PM
but I think you're playing a little fast and loose with "brilliant". I've been listening to your stuff constantly since I stumbled across it today. When we'd play we were told we'd do better in the UK, but who really knows for sure? I'm just glad to have any audience. TO be honest, I have to be ripping off someone with that melody. It came too quick. But thanks for listening and please keep your stuff coming!
