Keywords:
slow (92)long (27)gone (23)
Description:
Loosely based on a previous tune I did with GregD: Gone. Electric pianos, bass, sax and drums were all played through my keyboard. What do you think?

It's funny you used the word 'loosely' in your song description because it's the looseness of the groove that I really love about this song.

This sounds very genuine, especially considering that this was all played through the keyboard, even the drums. I think that probably adds to the loose feel, which is a really good thing.

Thanks for listening in. This is a fun idea to jam to, and I do that quite a lot, but the problem has been that when I record it the rhythms turn out too irregular, too loose in fact. Its good to hear that by building the song up carefully I didn't lose the laid back feel of the groove :)

I agree w/ledebutant - it's the looseness that makes it work. I really like it - very impressive you did it all w/keyboard. That's no easy feat! Thanks

Happy to hear you like the tune. To get other instruments sounding good takes a little practice because they "attack" the notes differently, but since most are monophonic, its not too hard. Drums on the other hand are tough, the drums here are sparse, but it is the rhythm I wanted :)

Like the cool easy going way it starts out &mdash 02/22/08 - 04:09:15 PM
and continues nice. Like the sound of that sax. Sax sounds terrific through the mic. Like how it is placed in my Sony MD V700 headsets. Love that headset to listen to those neat sounds here.

Thanks for sharing!

something missing &mdash 02/22/08 - 05:34:34 PM
I think some vocals would do well with this particular joint. I can see myself in a smoke filled jazz club checking out a sensual singer in red with you on the keys.

"sensual singer in red" -- I like the way you think, it would be great to hear some vocals with this. Thanks for the suggestion.

I agree &mdash 02/22/08 - 06:03:28 PM
with Ledeb' about the 'looseness'.... it gives a really relaxing 'city after dark' feel. All the instruments sound very convincing, especially for me the Sax... the vibrato sounds just right: nice sound and I know what you mean about the irregularity of rhythms... I've had that prob. too, but gave up and resorted to loops ( I'm just a coward), regards M

Glad your stopped by. I have to be clear on the the drums, I played them, but the part is only a few bars long, and then it is repeated (like a loop ;)

No way &mdash 02/22/08 - 08:13:19 PM
Played on keys mabye I had too much wine tonight but this was the highlight!!!!! excellent cant believe you achieved such great sounds with your keys . Just let me say the fact that you used your keys is irrelevant the whole jam is a search for a note that Coltrain would be proud of. great mix up almost A live feel the way you give each instrument a shine in the spot light very cool!!!!

I won't pretend to be up to Coltrane's level, but sets like his are a model I like to follow. Glad you enjoyed the tune.

I think... &mdash 02/23/08 - 11:02:23 PM
...you've got such a mellow arrangement going here, Bill, that it's impossible to resist its charm. You've got a real handle on how all these pieces fit together to make a satisfying, musical whole. Loose and full of energy. I am always fascinated by how "real" a song like this feels when care is taken to do it up right. Wonderful track intelligently conceived. Cool.
Peace.

Sounds like I stopped at the right point on this tune. I did a lot of other improvised lines, especially for the electric piano, but came back to this with just enough structure for the listener to hold on to.

cool &mdash 02/24/08 - 07:43:27 AM
I like this smooth sax. And the looseness mentioned above, yeah - makes it work ...
Lovely track full of atmosphere. An instant favorite!!

years ago I used to frequent some small jazz clubs is some of the seedier parts of London. This took me straight back - smokey - boozey - late night... wait a minute I'm getting my coat on I'd forgotten how much fun they were.
This just sound so live Bill... REALLY impressive. Love it.
Cheers

Errr...loosely....right...well, as I commented just a minute ago on your comment, you are a very talented person. What is the fusion btw in Jazz-Fusion? A fusion with...mmm...Drum-n-Cymbal? Hihihihi. Still, I stand in awe. My only sugggestion, since everything is so organic, would be to add a little variation on the Cymbals, perhaps a little roll or hit a hit on the cymbal with a brush (as opposed to a stick). Please consider it critique in the Greek sense, e.g. constructive. What I friggin digged is the Bass, where did you get that from?
Ciao! Marc

JustBase &mdash 02/24/08 - 08:58:46 PM
You are right on tonight, Mr Base. The fusion is with rock, and perhaps this is a little more like pure jazz, genre choice is not exactly an exact science :)

Now, those cymbals: you are on target again. I find doing percussion more than a little daunting and tend toward the minimum. Here a little more could improve the tune.

Thanks for the close listen.

I tell myself to think like a sax player, but since I don't play sax, that is not always enough. I do listen to a lot of jazz with sax parts, that must help some too :) Thanks for stopping by.

GregD - now there's a good guy I miss &mdash 02/25/08 - 05:43:51 PM
Hope he's doing well in India.

Man I'm really impressed with the sax sound you're getting here - not just the sound but the feel - that's what makes it work - feeling the breathing - and you've got that down. Excellent. The rest is cool too. Very nice composition and production.

Breathing keys, I like that. Always try to make my percussive instrument more melodic.

GregD is back. He posted a piece of electronica a week or so back. I haven't seen him in the forums or commenting much though, so he may be picking up loose ends at home after such a long trip.

Very cool .. &mdash 03/01/08 - 02:44:42 AM

.. the loose feel is indeed awesome .. and the sax sounds very convincing to me. Perfect for a little smokey jazz club/bar scene in a movie .. I'm with spit .. expecting the sultry bluesy female vocal to come in.

Mix balance is excellent .. my only small suggestion (apart from considering adding vocals) would be the bass sound .. of all the sounds, it'a little too clinical .. I wanted/expected a little more dynamic there .. bit heavier slap .. the odd slide down, some fretnoise .. would enhance the illusion.

You might consider asking musichead for some upright bass playing for this??

Apb &mdash 03/01/08 - 08:02:00 AM
Some thought provoking comments. It would be difficult to add the vocal part, because I don't have a lyric. But the idea of letting Musichead add some real player flair to the bass line sounds possible. Thanks.
