Keywords:
swamp (7)blues (319)bar (13)hotel (2)willnlf (1)
Description:
The feel of this tune was inspired by watching T-Bone Burnett - Alison Krauss - and Robert Plant perform songs from their CD Raising Sand. The band was so subdued and in the pocket it was beautiful to watch. Well - This isn't nearly as wonderful - and I've been messing with it a few days hoping it might get better - but hell it's not budging and life's too short.
However - I do really like Will's poem The Bar at the Farmer's Hotel - that I turned to for lyrics here. Not sure I did him or this song justice - but it's late - and I'm tired.

Lyrics:
Friday night at the bar
in the Farmer’s Hotel
Small pools of snow melt
on the floor beneath the rail
The sweet smell of boot leather
rich and strong like stew
in the bar’s damp warmth

Denimed shoulders
hunched over a shot and a stout
Rough red faces reflected
in the dim light
of the back bar mirror
Familiar bottles gleaming
amber and gold
like liquid beacons

From the corner jukebox
Crazy Mama shuffles softly
a gauzy musical massage
relaxing sore muscles
like the practiced hands
of a strong woman.

Then Sweet Melissa
kindles the weekend flame
as the first tired couple
weaves a soft two step
around the oaken tables.

When the door opens
cold wedges in
a cloud of steam
from another grateful pilgrim
just delivered from the hushed winter
new fallen snow darkness

Friday night at the bar
in the Farmer’s Hotel
as the earth breathes and rests
and the low voices murmur
Hymns of quiet release

It occurred to me as I was heading off to bed that maybe you'd like a pass at this with your own lyrics and vox. Any interest?

I am... &mdash 02/23/08 - 11:38:29 PM
...having some difficulty hearing the lyrics above the accompaniment. I'm not too much into being picky, but my tastes draw me more toward the development of a tune in any song with lyrics especially...When you change chords to II-IV-I there is some nice energy, but there is a lot of the same I chord as the lyrics go by. Well, I guess I'd just like to see the song "go" somewhere melodically.
Always a pleasure, though, to hear your carefully crafted work.
Peace.
Paul

I hear you 100% Paul &mdash 02/24/08 - 10:02:15 AM
this was an experiment in mining a groove = hence the lack of melodic development - however - if I were a better player I might have brought more invention to the restricted structure. As for the lost vocals - well - that's something I go back and forth with all the time. As always - thanks for listening and commenting.

I think &mdash 02/23/08 - 11:39:38 PM
this actually sounds way better than you think it does. You have a very cool groove here and the guitar work is perfect. That Alison Kauss cd with Plant is really good-I know what you mean about that band{I think those are the same people that play with Tom Waits?)they can take 1 or 2 chords and make an amazing sort of minimalist creation.Anyway you have done a similar thing here. It's hard to play simple!

Nice of you to stop by &mdash 02/24/08 - 10:04:37 AM
your comments are very kind and supportive - much appreciated. I'm getting tickets tomorrow to see the show when they come to NY in June. If you can - try and see the video on CMT.

Too hard on yourself! &mdash 02/24/08 - 01:55:22 AM
This sounds dark and bluesy- great guitar and nice pounding drums. The only quibble is that i think the chorus/refrain needs something with a little more oomph, maybe some backing harmonies.

A great hypnotic track - really enjoyed this, and lyrically this is awesome

How nice of you to offer backing vocals &mdash 02/24/08 - 10:06:14 AM
just kidding - I know you've got a very full plate as it is. Glad you dug it and got into Will's poem.

cooking gumbo.....it has the meet u at the ok corral vibe....even tho the lyrics speak of images to be interpreted by ones own reflection.....deep material here...

I like &mdash 02/24/08 - 12:39:33 PM
the way you hit the groove from the opening beat and sustain it all the way through. Echoes Raising Sand but also Dylan's Time Out of Mind. I think you excel at this kind of laid back lyrical guitar work. You let it go here and there but never get outside "the pocket" as you call it. As always, great reading and phrasing of the poem, particularly the end lines and specifically "new fallen snow darkness." The more I listen, the more I like it.

The opening beat is my favorite part &mdash 02/24/08 - 06:02:05 PM
I repeated it once - but I really just want to hear that first hit over and over again. Glad you're happy with the phrasing - I played with it quite a bit before settling on something that seemed to work. Thanks again for the flow of words to dip into as needed.

heavy &mdash 02/24/08 - 01:47:48 PM
I see no problem here at all. Great heavy boot stomping beat. Guitars cool and slung low below the waist.

I perceived to vocal delivery as more as a narrative from a man who carries the weight of the dreary world on his shoulders.

I wish I could look cool &mdash 02/24/08 - 06:05:15 PM
and play a low slung guitar - but I can't seem to pull it off. Now I'm not one of those up on the chest guys either - I guess I play a potbelly cover style. Glad you dropped by.

Bar Room &mdash 02/24/08 - 03:36:27 PM
Sounds like a Bar Room Hymn. Great atmosphere, don't over-polish, you may start rubbing off the best parts, this sounds really good now.

Thanks
Bill

the lyric worked so well for you. Believe it or not, but it's been lodged in the heart for close to 40 years. Took that long to get it on paper. There's just no telling when stuff will break loose.

Lou Reed vs Johnny Cash &mdash 02/24/08 - 08:05:26 PM
That's what I hear in this really dark and droning blues number. Great song bud and will. Sorry I haven't been around to comment lately, but trust me, I enjoy your music and I try to catch up on downloads regularly.

Take care,

Bob

Wow !!!! &mdash 02/24/08 - 09:34:39 PM
Just listened the AK/RP CD a few weeks ago, really loved it. I'm back here since yesterday, I've listen some of your comps I've missed (been away for so long), a real pleasure to find you back here. Since the first chord, I knew this was going to be great. Really excellent, love the pace, your nonchalant voice and the Danelectro vibe. One the best rock songs I've heard here since I'm around ! Chapeau, mec !

Johnny Cash sound to it. Really absurd rhythm that is like Johnny meets Page kind of way... Cool tune full of some tasty bluesy guitar bits.

this is great. what a beat. this is perfect, i know that some folks are probably thinking this needs to "go somewhere" but knowing your taste (and mine) you really did this one perfectly. like the basically spoken words and the repetition. this is pretty friggin deep man. don't add backups. kind of reminds me of beck in a way.

I restrained myself as best I could here - glad you like it lean. I actually started the day thinking I'd do a T Rex or JAMC thing with big hollow drums - till I saw the Krauss/Plant thing and got into vibrato guitar.

It's the old: "I could do this in my sleep" line, eh...hmmmmmm?

Raunch and sensitivity meet and have a drink, take it outside, and see who's got the fastest gun...

Cool...nice collab...

[ Reply to This ]
What gave you that idea? &mdash 02/29/08 - 06:03:44 PM
The only way I could get the feel down on this and keep it steady was to create my own loops and build a groove. I'm a better tweaker than player I think. Will's poem gave this some needed drama and focus.

Great vibe off this &mdash 03/02/08 - 04:52:16 PM
The lyrics, I think, are excellent - that's a terrific poem, kudos to Will - and the music suits them nicely, I think. In a strange way, the instrumentation and almost hypnotic groove gives the lyrics a darker edge, and it works. Some lovely guitar licks thrown in there, and very good vocal performance - world-weary, maybe? I like this a lot. NIcely done. Peace.
