Description:
FEEL is what music is all about to me.
I remember the old band I started a little over a decade ago. The band originated from a break up of a former band I was a member. It was a bit ugly, the bass player Cedrick and I were unhappy with the new drummer, Cedrick and I made a move to go on strike until there was a replacement. It didn’t pan out too well and the leader of the group said he was unhappy with us and had dissolved the band. That left Cedrick and I on our own.
We began to practice at a rehearsal studio over in Dallas. From there we acquired a drummer, Rick and another guitar player, Terry (aka paralax). It was a major improvement from the previous band, with a decent rhythm section to back it all up, the band name FEEL was conceived.
A special thanks to Emily Rohm for singing this song for me. With her dynamic voice, it makes a difference to what this composition is.
Emily Rohm on vocals
Me on guitar
EZ-Drummer on drums
My midi Keyboard on bass
Re-mastered and mixed with Logic Studio
A tribute to my old band FEEL.
Lyrics:
Hear the sound that surrounds you,
Embrace it and play...
Feel the world spin around you,
Hold on tight and feel...
Can't you feel it...
Hear the song that will send you,
To where you want to be...
See the sky spin around too,
Look up at it you'll see...
Can't you feel it...
Fell the heat, let the sun shine in...
And Feel the beat, let the sound surround you...
First verse again....

Emily has alot of strenght in her voice! YOu guys rock real tight! I dont know why it reminds me of jefferson airplane, but in a cool way... not in the starshipway mabye if they stuck to the rock roots this is what would have happened! I like the end just goes up the scale and out!!!!! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks for the comparison &mdash 02/27/08 - 09:08:46 PM
Emily definitely has some pipes. I'm glad you liked this and thanks for the kind words. [ Reply to This ]
This is headphone magic... &mdash 02/24/08 - 08:43:13 PM
...largely on the basis of great singing from Emily and really funky and energetic playing from John...
But, ya know, the bass and drums on this one are actually really strong and lifelike, too... You must've known just what you wanted, and had some idea of how to get it...
Anyway, it's a lot of fun to listen to, and I intend to do just that...

listen to music like you do. You have a way of deciphering music and coming up with highlights to a song. That aside, your right on when you say I must have known what I had in mind when it came to the drums and bass.
On the first version of the song, I managed to slaughter the drums when trying to emulate what the drummer use to play. I'm no drummer and sometimes it's best to leave the drumming to the experts. I've been looking for a percussion program that gives me the right sound and control over the included loops. EZ-Drummer is a midi based drum machine that gives me the tools to manipulate and add. As far as the kits, I was suggested by EZ-Drummers customer service to acquire the vintage kit which turned out to work well for me. The drums are a bit different than the the original live version especially at the beginning and on some of the changes though I think they fit well.
I originally wrote this song for Cedrick. He is a phenomenal bass player and a big student of Marcus Miller, Stanley Clark, and a fan of the band Earth Wind and Fire. The bass I emulated on the keys mimicked some of the riffs he used when we use to play this. I built the rest from there.
And of course, Emily's voice is such a big improvement from when I sang it. [ Reply to This ]

Think I can feel &mdash 02/25/08 - 04:10:31 AM
I think I can feel what you feel in music.
Have always almost adored your guitar things.
Only needed a few chops of the introductory backing here, to know it was for the fav-button.
And yes, as you point out, Emilys vocals counterpoints the backing in a really interesting way. Makes the song to a meeting between old and new times. A great contribution.
A highlight is the way too short guitar solo.
Please could I have twenty minutes more of that :) every day :) [ Reply to This ]

Thanks for the kind words. I wish I could play longer leads for you but I would probably start making mistakes. I'm glad you feel music like I do... I kind of figured you to be more passionate than I. I have to agree, Emily does an extraordinary job on vocals and I think it blended well with this piece of music. Always a treasure to read your comments.

Nice to have your presence. I have to agree that Emily can really emote. It's really hard to not come up with a decent tune having her voice to compliment it. I appreciate the encouragement on the backup band as well. [ Reply to This ]

Hey Tom &mdash 02/27/08 - 09:25:39 PM
Sweet Slick &mdash 02/25/08 - 07:17:22 PM
This is super groovy and Emily's vocal reminds me of a sweeter Grace Slick. Ed's right that the song and mix has a ton of energy and the drums are really strong, I think.
In spots it seems as though the vocal is overpowering the rest of the arrangement. Emily's a really strong singer and her tone is very bright compared to the sound of the rest of the song, so at the points where the levels seem like they might need some massaging, her voice REALLY pops out and it's hard to hear the rest of the mix. I'm not complaining because she sounds great, but I think she could be sitting a little better in the mix, still.
Your fuzzy solo just kills, I'm sitting here grinning on the second playthrough, because the whole thing just rocks and is so much fun. [ Reply to This ]

Hi John!! Thanks for letting me know about the remix. I haven't been around here much lately, and it's great to hear from you! The new drum track sounds great. It is a new drum track, right? They sound much tighter in the remix. Everything really sounds more balanced and slick.
Your songs are always fun to sing and I hope we can do more together someday. :) [ Reply to This ]
Hey! Emily! &mdash 02/26/08 - 07:17:29 AM
It's great to see you here. Yes those are new drums and the song was re-mastered in Logic Studio. With the new tools I have there should be a big improvement on the overall sound.
Someday let me know and we'll come up with another collab. [ Reply to This ]
sweet! &mdash 02/26/08 - 09:39:58 AM
Fantastic, both of you! This has all the ingredients of a bad-ass rock song. Love the the vocal effects used ever-so sparingly. Really great. One tiny little nit: at 2:10, during that bridge, I seem to be missing the really low end on the percussion track. Maybe a bit more punch on the kick drum? Seems like a great place to bump the bass a bit while Emily sings the bridge. Just a thought. Love it! [ Reply to This ]
Great to see you hear! &mdash 02/27/08 - 09:32:41 PM
I'm happy you liked this... your right... no bass on the bridge... just an over phased kick and snare... it does shake the car windows on my commute to work though. [ Reply to This ]
